Brandish Christmas Picks: Comme Des Garçons Christmas pouch

By Jonathan Smith on December 4th, 2008

comme-des-garcons-xmas-pouch-2.jpg

As Isabelle has mentioned and as you may be aware from the adverts that have been on your telly since the start of November (which is too early goddamit!) it’s Christmas time and time to start thinking of what gifts you’re going to ply your loved ones with. From Comme Des Garçons are these Christmas pouches, made from black leather and studded with Swarovski stones to spell out “Dec 2008″. Other than the lettering on the outside I’m not clear on what makes these so Christmassy, perhaps you could fill them with love to all men and seasonal good will. Also it occurs to me that if you pull this out to buy your ice cream in the height of summer, you’re going to look a little bit of a dick with your past season Christmas based pouch.

These will be available from Dover Street Market soon if you know of someone who needs a Christmas-based pouch. Jump through for more pics.

Sunglasses might seem like an odd choice for a Yuletime gift but if someone gave me these for Christmas I would put them in a glass cloche as an exciting reminder of sunnier times until March or thereabouts. A wonderful injection of colour for any outfit these sunnies are available from Oak.

Brandish Inspiration: Topman Latest Trend- Block Heads

By Will Reid on November 20th, 2008

For AW08-09, Topman has created a video showcase of their latest collection- Block Heads. Model James Mclean poses in what Topman tells is a trend “inspired by the look of a Dickensian gypsy mixed with influences from the deep south.” We get a glimpse of what we will no doubt be wearing by Christmas and the video really projects what the look is all about- a poetic Grunge with not a slight hint of Luke Worrall.

“Bib front t-shirts are worn under a waistcoat and double breasted cardigans, topped off with a black padded donkey jacket for a military feel. Big accessories for this trend include a selection of trilby hats and scarves worn with tweed trainers or brogues.” Winter’s never looked so good!

Junk De Lux knit Dot Dash hat

By admin on November 18th, 2008

wire dot dash hat knit bobble junky de luxe asos beanie.jpg

Dot Dash; it’s the name of a great song by Wire (listen to the song against a montage of Star Trek clips here) and it’s also the name of this hat by Junk De Luxe from Asos (£35).

A satisfyingly handknit look hat it mixes demure grey with an earthy brick red and has a jaunty little bobble on the top. Forget pseudo-sporty or military looks this beanie will keep you warm and magically instill a boyish urge to start kicking leaves in the park. Miles better than pretending you’re on manoeuvres or in Chamonix.

Yay or Nay?- American Apparel Unisex Winter Ski Hood

By Will Reid on November 13th, 2008

aa.jpgAmerican Apparel is a brand that I can’t help but be suspicious of. Yes, the adverts are provocative. Yes, Dov Charney supposedly walks around his office naked. Yes, their shop assistants look like they’ve just walked out of a NYLON spread. My problem is that whenever I see someone wearing American Apparel, it tends to be the case that it is the not the clothes that are great but how they are styled.

I can’t imagine this ‘Winter Ski Hood’ (£10) looking good on anyone who isn’t a model but I am wary of giving it a firm ‘Nay’ as I just know that as soon as this post is published, some edgy fashion editor will decree it the It-item of the season.

Pauric Sweeney python and leather bag

By admin on October 17th, 2008

As the lovely chap in our Yay or Nay heels debate demonstrated there is a burgeoning trend for men to co-opt traditionally female fashion status markers like heels and bags.
Pauric Sweeney’s bag is no half-measure, it’s pure luxury with a combination of python and leather and discreet hardware. It’s such an intricate bag I’m not entirely sure I could see many men going for it, I wouldn’t mind it myself I just need to find a boyfriend who can afford the £1,480 price tag so I can steal it off him!

Obama belt, the iPhone for your waist

By Jonathan Smith on October 9th, 2008

frontImage.jpg

It has been a few weeks now since I last posted something Obama related, not that the fashion world hasn’t been punctuated almost daily with a new label pushing the Obama cause with some special edition T-shirt or sneaker- something that has been unheard of for any other Presidential Candidate. Could you really see Clinton’s face on the toe box of a Dunk? Neither can I, Monica Lewinsky’s box on the other hand… Ho-ho-ho, I jest. It has got to the stage now where you could have an entire weeks worth of wardrobe clad head to toe in top fashion brands bearing the visage of Barack.

Dear memoirs: do you know your belt size? I bet you don’t

By Jonathan Smith on September 30th, 2008

4.jpg

Dear memoirs, walking through the office last Friday between avoiding work down in the samples cage and avoiding work at my desk I was beckoned over by a young female buyer “What size waist are you?” odd I thought, interesting opening to any conversation. I mused for perhaps for only a second and responded “About a 30″ she looked oddly satisfied then slapped a belt into my hand a commanded me to put it on, not to upset the young Miss I obliged and began to remove my own belt, her eyes transfixed on my waist line. I thought in any other situation and I could be labelled quite the Cad, but this, was of course, only business. With the belt on and fitting perfectly the young lady asked me what size belt I usually take, “Ermm I’m not really sure, probably a Medium” she looked at me like I was a fool, and I was because the belt I was wearing was a Small, a Medium would have dwarfed me. I removed the belt and retreated to my desk feeling humbled.

True story that. My point is do you really know what size belt you take? It’s hard to tell and it’s tough for you to measure accurately the length of your current belt without knowing how to correctly measure a belt- step in Atsui and their super useful guide to belt measuring.

Check it out and never be made a fool of like I was.
