Oliver Peoples: Vintage Eyewear

By Laura on March 2nd, 2011

Oliver Peoples consistently impress me with their eyewear collections, and this latest is no different.

The company was founded in 1986 when opticians Larry and Dennis Leight opened an optical boutique on Sunset Boulevard, California. Earlier that year, they purchased an estate collection of vintage American-made eyewear. The assortment included thousands of beautifully filigreed rimless and metal frames, including clip-on metal sunglasses produced by iconic American companies, such as by Bausch & Lomb and American Optical. All the frames were unworn, in mint condition and in their original packaging.

The brothers purchased the entire lot, which included a receipt signed with the name “Oliver Peoples,” who they reasoned was the original owner or distributor. When they decided to sell the estate collection in their retail store, they decided to use this name in his honor.

Now years later, encouraged by loyal friends, family and customers Oliver Peoples founder Larry Leigh, has dug through his personal archive of original Oliver Peoples designs and decided to revive several iconic, brand-defining styles.

He believes, and I’m inclined to agree, that these classic styles is just as strong today as it was twenty years ago. Since very few originals still exist, and because it is essential that the same attention to detail, craftsmanship and the integrity of the original styles be retained, the brand reached out to the same Japanese factory to reproduce these designs in a limited run. The frames will be made available to select customers.

Iconic ring

MoonCarbon Open Cuff

This month, Swarovski has released a collection of jewellery and accessories especially for men. Recognised for over a century as the world leader in cut crystal, we were quite curious as to what the collection would entail.
The collection which is based around six main themes of course includes faceted crystal, but more surprisingly ceramic. The combination of these materials allows them to successfully combine elegant and strong forms, to create an overall very elegant line.

The Master-Piece Over V4 Backpack

By Laura on January 31st, 2011

The Master-Piece Over V4 Backpack came out a few months ago now, but I have decided to write about it anyways, as every time I see one I get a little bit of bag envy.

Made by the renowned Japanese bag manufacturers Master-Piece, the V4 was made exclusively for the UK market. With a nylon upper with suede trims, each bag is monotone with very minimal branding. But what makes these bags so great is the incredibly vibrant colours, and the attention to detail. From the almost perfectly matched suede and nylon, to the brushed steel buckles this bag has been well thought out and designed

However, they don’t come cheap priced at £185. I guess I can keep dreaming for now.

At a first glance this looks like an ordinary belt, but it is in fact a very well disguised tool belt.

Perfect Bow Ties By Pierrepont Hicks

By Laura on December 1st, 2010

If you haven’t caught wind of it yet, bow ties are making a big comeback at the moment. Finding the right one can be a bit of a challenge, but I recently stumbled across the amazing Pierrepont Hicks, and well…be prepared to have necktie envy.

Pierrepont Hicks was founded by an American couple, Mac and Kat. Mac apparently takes care of the numbers and Kat handles design, which she is no stranger too. With experience working in fashion + publishing in New York for over ten years, Kat has spent time at Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Gourmet + ELLE magazines.

There ties are all produced in New York, by master craftsmen, who practice traditional tie workmanship patterns. Apparently a single tie can take sixteen steps to create and they emphasize just how important it is not to skip a single step – something that is very evident in the craftsmanship.

Check out 5 of our favourite bow ties in the gallery below.

Security Tag Accessories

By Laura on December 1st, 2010

Screen shot 2010-12-01 at 4.46.55 PM.png

Accessories can be a great way to dress up an outfit, simple cuff links, a pocket square, scarf, the list goes on. However, this is one accessory I am not sure I would purchase any time soon. The pin is made from 18k-gold-plated sterling silver and is meant to look like the security tags stores put on clothes to prevent theft. Art director Justin Gignac, claimed that the piece stems from his desire to elevate the mundane and overlooked items in our everyday lives. Justin explains the security tag “is one of those things that I’ve ignored for years. What better way to call attention to it then make it gold and throw some diamonds on it.”

To me it just sounds like he has been reading a bit to much about DuChamp recently.

Security! is available with ($700) or without diamonds ($550) here. Of course I am sure you can go down to your local retailer and pick up a more authentic version for a fraction of the price.
