A Brief History of the Contact Lens

By shinychris on September 28th, 2012

From a Renaissance Visionary to Vision Correction for the Masses

As a contact lens wearer myself, I feel infinitely indebted to the tiny silicone discs I insert into my eyes daily. Being blind as a bat, I suspect I’d have been among the first to have been eaten by a saber tooth tiger in caveman times, and am thus grateful to the wonders of modern science for the powers of vision correction. That said, I was surprised to discover that the history of the contact lens actually goes back some 500 years.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s the ever forward thinking Leonardo da Vinci who is credited with the first concept for altering the eye’s optics. In his 1508 Codex of the Eye, Da Vinci made the perceptive observation that submerging your eyes into a bowl of water perceivably alters your vision. A century or so later, René Descartes proposed a different method for vision correction, whereby a glass tube filled with liquid is directly attached to the eye. Descartes’ notion was an interesting step in the right direction, albeit an impractical one, preventing the proposed wearer from blinking.

It would be another 200 years before a bright mind explored a more practical approach. In 1845 Sir John Herschel proposed a rather repulsive sounding solution for vision correction. He suggested that ‘a spherical capsule of glass filled with animal jelly’ could be fitted directly to the cornea. Though Herschel apparently never tested these ideas, others soon began taking the concept of the contact lens a step further.

Sticking glass in your eye may not sound like an advisable idea; however this is exactly what the next generation of experimental ophthalmologist began to try, with a surprising degree of success. 1887 saw German ophthalmologist Adolf Gaston Eugen Fick fit the first successful contact lenses made of heavy blown glass shells. He initially tested his lenses on a group of unlucky rabbits before popping them in his own eyes. Though they did the job, the thick glass covered the entire visible part of the eye and was never comfortable for the wearer. More importantly, these prototype glass lenses as well as later hard plastic models prevented the eye from ‘breathing’ properly.

It wasn’t until the end of the 1970s that hard lenses were developed to correct the problem of oxygen permeability. However the success of these lenses was rapidly eclipsed by the rise in popularity of soft lenses. Czech chemists Otto Wichterle and Drahoslav Lim are credited with the original breakthrough in soft lenses, published in their work “Hydrophilic gels for biological use” in 1959. Dr. Wichterle took his concept a step further by creating a means for the production of these lenses. In 1961, he began experimenting at home with his son’s erector set and bicycle parts. Using the unlikely tools at hand, Dr. Wichterle created the prototype of the spin-casting machine used to produce the world’s first soft contact lenses.

This concept was picked up by Bausch & Lomb, and in 1972 the soft, breathable lenses hit the mass market. However, it would take several decades before the materials of the soft contact lens were perfected, becoming the durable silicone hydrogels familiar today. Contact lenses have certainly come a long way from the sketches in da Vinci’s notebook to the daily disposables available at places like LensWay. I suppose among other things we have a group of German rabbits and some Czech children’s toys to thank for our modern vision advancement.

Gold Medal Style Winners: a look back at the standout style moments of the London 2012 Olympics

By shinychris on September 24th, 2012

Sponsored post

London’s always been an edgy trendsetter, and this summer it showed that sport can be just as sexy as the catwalk, thanks to some standout style stars on the track. Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Karen Elson may have strutted their stuff in Alexander McQueen to close the games, but when it comes to memorable fashion moments, this year’s gold medals go to these guys.

Mo Farah

Britain’s golden boy of the track and field, Mo became a double Olympic champion at the 2012 Olympic Games, taking gold in both the 5,000 and 10,000 metres in breathtaking style. And as well as his eye catching smile as he crossed the finish line, Mo grabbed our attention with his custom-designed Nike Zoom Victory Elite neon-yellow spikes. He wasn’t the only one to step into the in-your-face trainers; in fact, more than 400 athletes wore bright yellow sneakers from the specially created Nike Volt range over the course of the games. The reason? Their high tech Flywire technology forms an ultra-lightweight upper, woven using featherweight single thread, to create a sock-like fit. Not to mention the gleaming, golden spike plate that helped 25 of the Nike wearers win gold for real.

Usain Bolt

The fastest man on the planet looked slick in his custom-designed Puma tracksuit pre-race. Draped in black from head to toe, hood up, and with plenty of attitude, Usain looked like a winner from the start. The Jamaican kit was designed especially for the games by Cedella Marley, daughter of reggae legend Bob. Featuring slogans like ‘Positive Vibrations’, and pictures of her father on some of the track jackets, she said that she’d been inspired by her dad’s style, and wanted to merge the worlds of Jamaican music and sport with her kit design. It certainly inspired the Lightning Bolt, who went on to create a new Olympic 100m record, and take home the gold in both the 100m and 200m finals.

Sanya Richards-Ross

American 400m gold medallist Sanya Richards-Ross caused a stir on the track with her imposing, feminine look. While most female athletes choose to tie their hair back, she braided just the front, leaving her tousled curls to hang loose down her back. Brushing back her hair, she revealed a pair of blingin’ Chanel earrings too. Teamed with her Nike athletic sleeves – designed to emphasise her muscular arms and shoulders, as Sanya stepped out onto the track she ensured that all eyes were on her – and an instant threat to her competitors before she’d got off the starting block.

Yohan Blake

Another trendsetter from the Jamaican team, Yohan turned heads and caused a little controversy with his OTT accessorising at the games. Violating the strict Olympic clothing regulations, which state that athletes are only allowed to wear apparel that is sponsored by their country, he flouted the rulebook and wore an eyepopping yellow watch during the 100m final. Custom-made for Yohan by designer Richard Mille, this bit of bling was impossible to miss, and cost an eyewatering $500,000 too.

Who are the main challengers for the Champions League?

By shinychris on September 4th, 2012

Sponsored post

With the qualifying rounds already well under way, the buzz for the return of the Champions League is starting to build and it won’t be long until the group stage draw is upon us. Last season’s victors
Chelsea will be keen to get going, as will clubs such as Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United who failed to make much of an impact last time out.

Big money has been spent this summer and plenty of United, City, Chelsea and Arsenal transfer news is still on-going in an attempt to make them the strongest of the English challengers for the European trophy. Chelsea and Arsenal have made some big signings in the close season and exciting talent such as Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski will give them the confidence that they can make their mark on the competition when the draw is made. United and City started the season as favourites for the Premier League title and they will also be right up there in the betting when it comes to the Champions League. Having both been knocked out at the group stage last season, the competition will certainly be high on their priorities and you could do a lot worse than to predict that either one of these two Manchester clubs will make the final at Wembley, next May.

All four English clubs are expected to do well and it is the first time for years that all four will genuinely believe they can win the trophy. The main threat to the English teams will once again come from Spain, as Barcelona and Real Madrid will look to improve on their semi-final defeats last season. Barcelona have a new manager but very little will change for the Catalan club as Lionel Messi and co. will be the early favourites to take the cup. Real Madrid are already under pressure in the league and they may see the Champions League as a welcome distraction when the group stages start, but Mourinho will be desperate to win the trophy with a third different club.

Aside from the usual suspects you can’t ignore last season’s finalists Bayern Munich, who probably feel they deserved to win the trophy before losing on penalties on their own patch. The Germans will definitely be a threat, but surprised a few last season by making it to the final and would be some way down my pecking order when selecting a pre-tournament winner.

Big spending PSG would like to think they have a chance, but like Manchester City last season, it may not be the right time or place and their main success will be in years to come. It is certainly the closest Champions League to call for a while and any side who makes it through the group stage will fancy their chances.

The Many Faces Of The Formal Shoe

By shinychris on August 29th, 2012

The variety of styles, colours and looks of formal shoes is growing day by day. Long gone are the days of just being able to choose between a black pair and a brown pair, and having to have shoe laces, too. Here’s a look at some of the many new and traditional faces of formal shoes.

Here’s an example of the traditional formal shoe, I just mentioned, right? Wrong. It has much more to it. A traditional formal show with a contemporary twist:

The subtle studs and interesting soles make this shoe ideal for the young entrepreneur who wants to dress for business, but keep his rogue flair intact.

Bold colours are becoming ever more acceptable in formal shoe wear, and it’s also highly popular. These flash red formal shoes can be worn to a posh dinner party, as well as to a wedding to really show off with your style.

Having no laces on your shoes would’ve not that long ago been completely unacceptable, as only six hole shoes were deemed as formal shoes. These no lace and more loafer styled shoes are very popular due to their boot like appeal.

These Jasper boots are borderline formal. You won’t get away with them at a business meeting just yet, but times are changing so keep an eye out for these two leather style ankle boots.

These formal shoes and many more mens shoes are available from House Of Fraser. Be sure to stop by and take a look.

Sponsored video: Chevrolet Volt overcomes range anxiety (and helps you defeat zombies in the process)

By shinychris on June 22nd, 2012

The Chevrolet Volt features extended-range capability

OK so you may not have ever experienced being chased by zombies when your car’s battery dies – like the guys in the video below – but Chevrolet’s Volt will help overcome the ‘range anxiety’ that many people feel when they are driving an electric vehicle.

Neither a hybrid nor a battery electric vehicle, this Extended Range Electric Vehicle (E-REV) keeps going when the onboard Lithium Ion battery is depleted thanks to the Volt’s Voltec electric drive. An onboard petrol powered generator extends the car’s range by over 300 miles. That’s pretty handy if you ever find yourself stranded in the desert with the undead on your tail!

The Volt can be plugged into any standard 230V household unit and recharged within four hours while the Volt’s dashboard gives the driver feedback on driving efficiency. A five door model, the Volt features ample space for four passengers and plenty of welly, accelerating from zero to 62 miles per hour in around 9 seconds and with a top speed of around 100 miles per hour.

Five different driving modes are designed to deliver maximum efficiency including normal, sport, mountain, hold and low shift while on board tech features include a six speaker sound system, two interactive LCD screens, DAB radio and iPod/MP3 input.

You can see the video for the Volt below:

What David Gandy Can Do For Your Style

By shinychris on May 14th, 2012

Written in association with High and Mighty

As a man, you may feel a bit reluctant to look to the catwalk for fashion inspiration, and with the weird and not-so-wonderful pieces that often make their sorry way down it, you’d be forgiven for your hesitance. However, one feature of the most high-profile catwalks should be allowed to infringe upon your wardrobe choices, no questions asked.

That special feature is model David Gandy. With his dark hair and tall stature, he could so easily be just another male model, but his masculine face and well-built body mean he’s a man real men can aspire to.

If you too have the stature to tower over most men, you could do much worse than to take a few tips from the model’s repertoire when building your own style. Online store High and Mighty caters specifically for tall and large men, so could help you find the clothes that fit for your own spin on David’s winning look.

In recent photos posted to his Vogue blog, David is seen with a goose of all things, wearing dark denim jeans with turn-ups, work boots, a brown leather belt, plain t-shirt and cream scarf. He finishes the look with a chocolate brown jacket for farmer-meets-history teacher cool. His facial hair rounds off a perfect casual style for the masculine man. Oh, and the goose isn’t a requirement. In fact I’d advise against it; hissing isn’t sexy in anyone’s book.

So now you’ve got the idea; simple styles worn to emphasise masculinity, yet not shying away from “softer”, more fashionable accessories that show an awareness of what’s on trend – it’s time to build the look.

Go for earthy shades like browns, olives and tans when choosing boots and belts. You can introduce brighter shades with your scarf or t-shirt, but don’t go for cartoon-worthy colours. If you are tall with very long legs and a short torso, choose longer-length jackets to elongate your upper body.

If your torso is long, wear your jeans as high as possible and expose your belt buckle by half-heartedly tucking your t-shirt in, a look perfected by David in the goose shots.

Sponsored video: James Charm on seduction in an elevator

By shinychris on May 3rd, 2012

This post is sponsored by Joop! Homme

Another lesson in seduction from charming ladies man, James Charm. In Episode 8, James reveals his secrets  to seducing a lady in an elevator!

Think a lift is a stange place for hitting on girls? Then think again. No matter whether it’s going up or down, sexual tension is always up in an elevator.

Whether the lift is playing hardcore punk or salsa, the elevator provides valuable flirting minutes with an attractive beauty.

Just a few tips on things to avoid if you want to succeed with your elevation seduction techniques. First of all, if some irresistable charm machine is running up to his luxury suite then forget it – just wait for another girl and another elevator.

And unless you really are the aforementioned charm machine then do not press the ‘red button’ to prolong the stay in the elevator, or you might just get a whiff of the tear box vaporiser she has in her handbag.

And while real men do sometimes wear pink, real men don’t cry in elevators! EVER.

By shinychris on March 29th, 2012

Sponsored post:

Spend less time watching TV and get on and live your life. That’s the message behind Puma’s latest  SOCIAL campaign. Celebrating those who choose to ignore the banality of today’s reality TV stars in favour of creating their own stories with friends and teammates, the film basically encourages us to get off our lazy backsides – if we haven’t already.

Whether it’s playing darts or table tennis, dancing with our friends or shooting pool, the film challenges the millennium generation to break free from the confines of reality TV ‘stars’, fame hunters and prima donnas. Asks the film: “Am I to be a wall of channel surfing and programmed petri dishes? A spew of reality TV stars…Or do you want me more..when life is played and not performed.

Created by the Droga 5 agency and directed by Fredrik Bond, the 90 second film juxtaposes reality TV audio clips with a group of youths getting out and having fun. It features clothes, footwear and accessories from the Spring, Summer and Autumn Winter 2012 Puma Social collection.

As well sponsoring professional athletes during this summer’s London 2012 Olympic games, PUMA Social aims to be the sponsor those obscure, bizarre and after-hour games that bond friends and create ‘remember that night’ moments – in other words the After Hours athlete!

By shinychris on February 29th, 2012

The Volvo Ocean Race is an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavour which has been built on the spirit of great seafarers – fearless men who sailed the world’s oceans aboard square rigged clipper ships more than a century ago.

Their challenge back then was not a race as such, but recording the fastest time between ports. This meant new levels of pride for themselves and great recognition for their vessel. The spirit that drove those commercial sailors along the web of trade routes, deep into the bleak latitudes of the Southern Ocean and around the world’s most dangerous capes, emerges today in the form of the Volvo Ocean Race, a contest now seen as the pinnacle of achievement in the sport.

During the nine months of the Volvo Ocean Race, which started in Alicante, Spain in October 2011 and concludes in Galway, Ireland, during early July 2012, the teams will sail over 39,000 nautical miles of the world’s most treacherous seas via Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, Auckland, around Cape Horn to Itajaí, Miami, Lisbon, and Lorient.

The race is the ultimate mix of world class sporting competition and on the edge adventure, a unique blend of onshore glamour with offshore drama and endurance. It is undeniably the world’s premier global race and one of the most demanding team sporting events in the world.

Sponsored video: Shangri-La

By shinychris on February 22nd, 2012

Sponsored by Shangri-La

There’s no greater act of hospitality than to embrace a stranger as one’s own. It’s in our nature.

Shangri-La’s new advertising campaign captures what we believe is in our nature: hospitality from the heart.

Explains Bruno Aveillan who directed the advertisement: “It’s a very simple story about a man who gets lost in a snow covered forest and who little by little realises that he is being followed by wolves.

“His fear heightens until the moment when he collapses from exhaustion. And the wolves far from attacking him end up saving him, keeping him warm and welcoming him as if he were a member of the pack.”

Continues Aveillan: “This rather humanist approach interested me because it recalled certain ancestral legends and it’s the sort of thing one doesn’t see much of in advertising.”
