Shorts! What the best dressed legs (aren’t) wearing

By Colin Chapman on March 24th, 2009

shorts_BWMkt.jpg
Saturday’s oh-so-welcome sunshine provided a first opportunity for 2009 shorts sightings with Hackney’s Broadway Market being an ideal setting. Amongst the tangled limbs of pram central, shorts were very much in evidence. On the lithe and louche, high jean cut-offs (a la Fantastic Man‘s guide to making your own) were a popular option. The plentisome SYD‘s (that’s sexy young dads if you’re not sure) meanwhile were a tad more modest with the long and narrow shorts style being popular – often teamed with plaid, deck shoes and a serious beard.

An emerging shorts trend however is old-school khaki shorts – rugby shorts length – that add a certain David Attenborough touch to your summer kit. Look out for vintage Ralph Lauren for a quality look – best avoided if your lallies are more Charles Hawtrey than Lawrence Dallaglio though.

Preview: Liam Gallagher’s new clothing label, Pretty Green

By Kimberley Foster on March 20th, 2009

From Catwalk QueenThis has to be the strangest news that I have read in a while (in the last 24 hours, at least). Liam Gallagher is getting his hands on the rag trade by launching his own fashion label, Pretty Green. Nope, I’m not joking either.

It seems the Oasis frontman has his sights set on fashion, why? Because “he likes clothes.” Fair enough I guess. The label is beginning with menswear, with a limited edition collection of classic pieces including trench coats, knit, footwear and t-shirts. Pretty green or pretty bad? You decide. A Comic Love The Look: Dom Joly is MC Hammer on ‘Let’s Dance for Comic Relief ’09′

By Will Reid on March 11th, 2009

lovethelook.jpgThis year’s Red Nose Day campaign is in full-swing and everyone from Fearne Cotton to Fern Britten is doing something funny for money. Dom Joly, the comic-genius and all-round bon viveur behind Trigger Happy TV, has joined the show Comic Relief show ‘Let’s Dance’ and last Saturday we saw him imitate the style and dance of the infamous MC Hammer.

To achieve the Hammer-style, Joly donned a pair of rather hideous Harem pants in the ever-popular gold lamé. Add chains, hi-tops and logo-print headbands and you have yourself a RND look. Remember, everyone loves the funny man!

Why not do something for Comic Relief yourself?

Brandish Inspiration: ‘Landed Gent’ in the NY Times T Style Magazine

By Will Reid on March 10th, 2009

Week on week, the NY Times T Style Magazine delivers a fabulous fashion spread. Sometimes the editorial is womenswear-based and on occasion, we are provided with incredible style spark. This week’s magazine features the ‘Landed Gent’ editorial and with its vintage, Grey Gardens feel and stunning photography, I felt I had to share it!

Styled by Bruce Pask and photographed by Matthew Brookes, check out the gallery by clicking on the image below.

WISHLIST: Pete Versus Toby ‘Tipsy’ Jumper

By Will Reid on March 4th, 2009

pvt2.jpgPete Versus Toby are an Australian label and they are easily one of the coolest new menswear labels out there. From the incredible hair of their model to the vintage-feel of their prints, I am fast falling in love with this great label!

For their latest collection “designer Marco Zirov has collaborated with Byron Bay artsists Lex Williams and Raina Hede to develop an in house winter range that juxtaposes the falling Roman Empire (USA) with Rothschild family inspired sketches. Through developing the diverse range, a study of drug use and its effects on an artist was also important.”

The collection will be in shops soon!

Brandish Poll: Do you Dare? Bum-Bags!

By Will Reid on March 3rd, 2009

n684944737_1400897_1301033.jpgAt a disco the other night, the theme was ‘City vs. Country’ and stuck for ideas, a friend and I decided to go as tacky tourists. Cue vintage novelty braces, high-waisted denim shorts and charity shop shirts.

My charity shop bum-bag has been the focus of much attention. While it was only a joke item, a few friends have since been talking about it and I wonder if it could be worked into an actual outfit.

Outside of an outrageously-themed disco, I think I will wear the accessory when I go to India in March with cartoon-print Harem trousers, white plimsolls, a plain white vest and vintage sunglasses (at right.) Practical and high-fashion!

Yay or Nay?

By Will Reid on March 3rd, 2009

okini.jpgThe Fashionisto has reported that Oki-ni is redesigning their website today and he has a quote from Pete Hellyer, Oki-ni Design Manager.

“While the products and mix has been constantly evolving the site has remained pretty much the same. 18 months on from the re-launch, what worked then…now doesn’t. We felt that it was time for a change, an evolution that puts the site on par with the products. And we hope that you agree.”

Prepare yourself for brilliant new labels, a blog, fashion archives and designer profiles. All exciting stuff, for sure!

Yay or Nay: Autumnal Tones on The Sartorialist

By Will Reid on February 27th, 2009

2209RLcapWeb-1.jpgFor me, the Sartorialist is often ‘Hail or Fail’ in that sometimes I want to literally hunt down the people in his photographs to steal their outfits and sometimes I just want to hunt them down and …hurt them? Anyways, I can’t decided with the photo to the left. While I love the proportion play of the trench and tight, knit waistcoat and the relatively baggy trousers tucked into the boots, I’m not as convinced by the Autumnal colour scheme.

Am I the only one who thinks this fashionisto needs a pop of bright colour? Vote Yay or Nay after the jump.

US GQ March 2009- Justin Timberlake

By Will Reid on February 27th, 2009

The latest issue of American GQ looks set to be an exciting issue. While not the most fashion-forward of magazines, GQ manages to provide consistent style advice and it usually has at least a few good features.

In this issue, we have Justin Timberlake posing in a variety of stylish albeit bland looks and one of the most interesting looking features looks set to be their ‘Top 10 Most Stylish Men in America’ feature. Check back soon for the entire list with pics!

Which High-Profile Model Inspired Brandon Flowers’ Brits Brilliance?

By Will Reid on February 26th, 2009

wenn5250728.jpgWhen Brandon Flowers stepped onto the stage at this years Brits 2009 in that jacket I died as I felt my own wardrobe implode with sheer joy. His jacket had major shoulder pads covered in long feathers and the overall look was a mixture of indie legend and an American footballer who had been given a makeover by Jean Paul Gaultier.

I was pleasantly surprised at how many people shared in my amazement and when I set my Facebook status to something Brandon-related immediately I had replies from fashion, music and technology writers all claiming to be either in love/ mad with envy or seeing double. I, myself, felt that I recognised the jacket and it wasn’t until the next day that I realised the model Brandon had obviously been taking style tips from…

Oh My Gran Torino…What was Clint Eastwood thinking?

By Will Reid on February 25th, 2009

gran_torino_photocall_001_wenn5253842.jpgI feel like a traitor to men worldwide (and that’s saying something seeing as my trouser of choice is the skinny jean and I am constantly borrowing things from friends and family without a second thought as to which sex the item was originally intended for.) I have just dissed Clint Eastwood on a pretty public scale and I can already hear the heckles and smalls rocks as they soar through the air.

But let’s be honest- he looks a complete mess. I am all for ageing gracefully and not heading in the direction of mutton dressed as lamb but this is just pure laziness. I don’t care if his luggage went missing or he was attacked on the way to the ceremony; there is simply no excuse.

How to update? I would suggest a simple white shirt to replace the sick-green polo and a pair of classic blue jeans instead of those hideous high-waisted slacks. Replace the trainers with brown boat shoes and you have a great laid-back cool for any age!

Jeremy Scott x Ksubi In-store this March!

By Will Reid on February 25th, 2009

20081030173114lh7.pngIn the later months of last year, the Brandish team began to see previews from the Jeremy Scott Loves Ksubi denim collection.

Now, upon Lady Gaga wearing the orange love-heart suit in Sunday Times Style magazine, we are pleased to tell you that the line will be in-stores this March.

This is the fifth time the two labels have collaborated and as with previous collections, Jeremy Scott Loves Ksubi 2009 toys with the idea of Scott’s brilliant, brash prints with the achingly cool shapes of Aussie-label Ksubi.

Trashbag Aesthetics have reported that the line will be released in shops in March and we have already begun sharpening our elbows!

The floral-print denim at left is the only menswear we have so far seen from the collection but those hardcore fashionistos will no doubt be rocking the woman’s Nu-Rave orange ASAP.

Love the Look: J.W Anderson S/S 2009 Look-book

By Will Reid on February 24th, 2009

jw9.jpgJ.W Anderson is a fringe designer who is fast-becoming one of the edgiest and coolest designers on the menswear scene. His Spring/Summer 2009 look-book is styled around themes of religion and from the title, ‘An Eye for an Eye,’ to the rosary beads and ornate headdresses, his theme is strong and bold. The look-book is full of subtle allusions to places of prayer; the smoky incense of Catholic churches to the opulent prayer mats of mosques.

The look above is second last in the look-book and please enlighten me (pardon the pun!) as to how you couldn’t like this shot. The intensity of the model’s stare and the contrast of plain shorts and extravagant crown works to create an utterly brilliant look.

News from New York: The Return of Ombré

By Will Reid on February 18th, 2009

00130m.jpgSince I started on Brandish just over a year ago, I have repeatedly examined how trends begin in womenswear and eventually make the leap to menswear some few seasons later. Well now the Ombré trend worked by womenswear designers such as Jonathan Saunders and Prada almost three seasons ago has been dished out in rather glorious spades by designer Robert Geller.

Geller has managed to take the trend and work it in a way that is masculine and edgy (a rare occurrence in the world of menswear) and this shirt looks set to make my WISHLIST as soon as it hits the shops in a couple of months.

What do you think of Ombré? Tell us on our Facebook wall!
