Clothing, Coats & Jackets, Designer Spotlight
By Will Reid on January 19th, 2009
This season is proving to be perfect for style-conscious men looking for a new sartorial direction. From Marni to Jil Sander, men are being given a chance to look top notch and whereas some seasons simply leave us to stick to a stereotypical male uniform, A/W 2009 looks to be the return of fashion flamboyance.
This velvet trench-coat from Dolce & Gabbana is gloriously over-the-top but allows men to be men with its razor-sharp tailoring and Oscar-Wilde cool (just for the record, I realise not everyone will see Oscar Wilde as a style icon and as a result- this coat is maybe not for you!) Straight off the runway at the moment, the trench will no doubt cost a fortune in the shops but keep your eyes peeled for celeb sightings!

Clothing, Designer Spotlight, Polls
By Will Reid on January 19th, 2009
The Burberry Prorsum A/W 2009 show has been going down a storm on the Internet with buyers and fashion critics air-kissing in delighted agreement as they plan their wardrobes for seasons to come (guilty as charged.) Apart from the amazing padded jackets and sharp tailoring, one of the things that has most caught my attention is the subtle return of the infamous check print. The beige tartan-esque print has, in recent years, become a taboo of the fashion industry but designer Christopher Bailey appears to have decided that the time has come for a major return.
What do you think- are you ready to show-off the check print? Vote in our poll after the jump!

Clothing, T-shirts, Polos & Shirts
By Colin Chapman on January 13th, 2009

America has always been the place to pick up cool T-shirts. Whether Hanes or (more recently) American Apparel, heavy duty 100% cotton T-s are an American staple. And there’s certainly no shortage of Stateside design talent when it comes to T-shirt graphics. Many of the best are available from 80′s Purple online. Costing approximately half the price they would here, it’s worth investing in a few at a time to make the postage worthwhile. Stock up now and be the envy of your friends this summer.

Post-Christmas and the inevitable unwrapping, posing and dressing that occurs as a direct result, I find myself on the hunt for new purchases to slyly absorb into my wardrobe (NYE Resolution: hide fewer credit card bills!)
I have decided to bring back an old Brandish feature- the ‘Wishlist.’ I begin with the ‘Unisex Circle Scarf’ from American Apparel. The scarf can be worn a mesmerising 12 ways for girls (as shown in a diagram on the label’s website,) but I think us boys could get just as much fun out of this great winter accessory.
The scarf costs £21 on-line and comes in 11 colours. A more affordable Wishlist so far!

Clothing, Lifestyle & Gadgets

In these times of global megabrands and identikit shopping experiences, it’s refreshing to discover a site like Manufactum. Featuring a quirky mix of unique, traditionally-made items from gloves and wallets to toiletries and household items, it’s a site that’s easy to get lost in. A bit like wandering around an undiscovered department store from another era, Manufactum specialises in original, often hand-made products which make perfect gifts. A few favourites from the huge range available: braided leather belts, classic striped matelot tops, silk stripe pyjamas and this gorgeously-packaged Klar’s curd soap. A rare pleasure.

You may not have the body of Hugh Jackman after all those mince pies but if you’re looking for a a piece to invest in you could do worse than the Australian cowboy classics on offer at RM Williams.
The RM Williams brand has been around for 75 years and brings with it a sense of gritty heritage. They also have a lovely site, including ‘Australia’ themed galleries featuring items worn in the movie.
The fabulous boots (around £189) are made to last a lifetime and even if they don’t they offer a full repairs service so you can genuinely call them an investment. To add to your Aussie rover swagger, a pair of moleskin jeans [heavy duty 'sueded' cotton] will keep you warm in the long run up to springtime. They retail at around £100.
The London store is at 102 New Bond Street, London W1S 1SS tel 0207 629 6222 or Google RM Williams to find UK outdoor clothing suppliers who stock the range.

You know when relatives get Christmas presents that just get under your skin? Well, Hama beads were that present during this holiday season. Whether in my pockets, in my shoes, woven onto my laces, down my skinny jeans (don’t ask!) they were everywhere. The trick with this gift is that you make designs out of the beads and then iron them for a minute to get a solid design. When a young cousin made me a heart it all clicked- these Hama beads were a replica of the It-accessory of the moment as seen on Kanye West and Brandish. And they only cost £3.75 off Amazon and for that price who cares if the recommended customer age is 5?!
Check the pictures of some designs that I managed to snap over the holidays!

During the Christmas season, I was lovingly entrusted with a vintage copy of Truman Capote’s ‘In Cold Blood.’ The book has definitely lived up to its reputation and the two films that have been made about the creation of the book (‘Capote’ starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and ‘Infamous’ with Toby Jones) offer not only a great plot but awesome fashion.
To achieve the look, buy simple jumpers in bright colours and wear them with trenches and blazers in base colours such as khaki, black and brown. Add either jeans or cords (if you want to edge towards a more formal look,) and bold accessories. Over-sized tortoiseshell sunglasses, fedoras, three watches at a time. Why not go all-out?

If like me you’re bored, bored, bored of winter and want Spring right NOW then a bit of fashion forward investigation might just perk you up.
I mentioned soft tailoring and pleated shorts in my piece on the Acne/Lanvin collaboration the other day but what else does S/S 09 hold in store for us?

January looms and you’re trying very hard to wear proper clothes again, but really there couldn’t be a better time to invest in some lovely pyjamas.
Isabelle’s post on finding inspiration in classic movies like It Happened One Night, left me thinking just how fantastic Mr Gable looked in his pyjamas. Meanwhile The Sartorialist posted recently on how he’d decided to take sartorialism into the bedroom by investing in some stylish PJs.
If you need more convincing, nightwear as daywear will be a feature of S/S 09, (at least as interpreted by Dolce & Gabbana) and we’ll be all vertical stripes and drawstring pants by then so why not get some practice in? No doubt anti-fashion writer Alexis Petridis (The Guardian magazine) will be deriding the PJ trend soon but don’t let the sight of him in nightwear put you off.
Brands? Derek Rose (from Selfridges and online) is the prince of PJs or try M&S .. your mother would be so proud.

As we endure the last week of 2008 and look back upon a year of fashion extremes, we still have the sartorial challenge of New Year’s Eve (NYE) ahead of us. While many opt for a loud, proud and (often) garish get-up, I am aiming to attempt a subtle luxury with the help of muted colours but opulent fabrics (velvet, silk, corduroy etc.)
The black cords above are a great base and, with a white shirt and the dove grey waistcoat pictured, they are easy to pull-off. The bow tie and vintage cuff-links are fun and appropriately over-the-top while the royal blue loafers are expensive but a great talking point.
Have fun, look great and, if you wake up the next morning to find your D&G loafers drowning in the contents of a red wine bottle, at least you know that you’re part of the ‘Walk of Shame Chic’ trend de jour!

Isabelle’s post about the lovely blue cardigan made me look out for other items to fulfill menswear’s current blue moment. Other options to bring out the peacock in you include Acne Jeans’ (yes, them again!) rather stunning blue cords, these snazzy blue-soled shoes by Folk, high-gloss patent Commom Projects hi-tops from Poste and this super-cosy down-filled sweater by Patagonia also from Folk. At this point in the year it might be worth waiting for the sales to kick in (and given the C***** C*****) these could be some sales.
When you do buy just keep it blue.

This outfit is based around an Argyle jumper from Gap and with argyle being one of the key trends of this season (it was featured on the catwalks of Dolce & Gabbana as well as Thom Browne,) the jumper is a perfect foundation for a great Christmas look. Take Levis Skinny 511™ jeans and add in a pair of gold shoes by Common Projects for some Christmas cheer!

Note to Editor: Can we feature pieces we bought just yesterday?
Now that I’ve cleared that up, I can proceed with this Christmas Outfit Pick. This polo is a great find and the loud print is definitely eye-catching. I found it in Topman yesterday afternoon and it was reduced to £10 from £16. In the image, the polo looks black but it is actually blue and the print looks slightly bigger (as opposed to the foot-print looking print pictured!)
I styled it with blue skinny jeans from Topman, two-tone trainers from Gargyle.com and a cable-knit beanie from Old Navy. If you want us to feature an outfit you have designed around a high-street item (from any country,) send it to isabelle@shinymedia.com.

The Guardian released its ‘Best Dressed of 2008′ list last week and along with likes of Carine Roitfeld and Alexa Chung, Henry Conway was featured as a sartorial star. The newspaper reports that “anyone who can steal the limelight from Paris Hilton at her own London party courtesy of a dashing white satin suit is OK by us.”
The 10-person long list is women-dominated and the only other men to feature on the list were Take That and Barack Obama so Henry has done rather well!
Do you agree with the paper’s judgement? E-mail isabelle@shinymedia.com or write on our Facebook wall!
