Last night The Royal Opera House, London saw the GQ men of the year awards. I wasn’t invited let alone nominated which of course draws a question mark over the validity of the event, however that aside it still proves to be a great opportunity for the men of London and the world to get up and be counted for style and talent. Some of the more interesting awards went to the following: International Man – Josh Brolin, Most Stylish Man – Brandon Flowers, Designer – Christopher Bailey, Politician – Boris Johnson (really? I mean seriously though, really?) and Radio Personality – Chris Evans (again: really? I mean radio yes but personality? I wouldn’t have thought so).
The outfits worn at the event all aired on the subtle side but there was a good range of style from damn awful to “DAMN! You look good bro!” Jump through for my selection of the good and the bad and ugly.

My style pick for this week is this gorgeous Comme Des Garcons wallet from Start London. Mr Start, a past columnist for Brandish, has a great look and I can imagine this item slotting into his vintage chic and classic cool wardrobe quite nicely. The embossed leather is a great cerulean blue, made famous by the brilliant film ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’ The wallet has a zip around two sides and an “internal pocket to hold either coins, cards or bills.”

If you are in need of something a little smarter and a lot more expensive than the Topman suit you bought for your court appearance then there is a guide to the coolest cool suits of A/W 08 over at men.style.com with this seasons theme being broad shoulders and wide legs, are we venturing back into the realm of shoulder pads? Sweet lord let us hope not.
I’m a massive advocate of the slimmer cut suit so this is perhaps not the guide for me but I’d say if you’ve got the money then these are a safe bet. Check the full selection out here and jump through to see my 3 favorites.

Want fashion but NEED sustainability? Nah me neither, but if you’re unlike me and care for the welfare of the planet then the Etnies SEED project has just the thing for you.
The SEED project is a collaboration between Etnies and Gary Benzel bringing you footwear and apparel made from recycled and sustainable materials, on top of this 1% of the profits from the sale of these pieces will go to environmental organisations that Etnies believes “will plant the seeds for the future of action sports, humanity, and our planet.”
The San Diego based artist Gary Benzel has had a strong guiding hand in the design of the range and has done a smashing job, every piece looking great and finished to a high standard of quality that you sometimes don’t find in items born of recycled materials.
Jump through for the full range.

One of my own punk-inspired ‘sets’ combines Dries Van Noten trousers, a Uniqlo t-shirt, an image of inspiration and a black crayon with Vans for some high fashion-DIY.
Polyvore has long been the talk of fashionistas and our sister site, Catwalk Queen, runs a ‘Style This’ competition based completely around the image-making tool. Whether it’s a Vivienne Westwood tie or a Topman ring, styling outfits has never been easier! Granted, we men have it a bit harder in terms of finding a wide variety of items but just search for ‘man bag’ and you have a good page of man-bags.
And best/worst of all? After you’ve styled your outfits you can even buy everything you’ve included in your image.
Look out for more Brandish outfits or watch the Polyvore tutorials and send your own to isabelle [at] shinymedia.com!

Wallace poses in a Paul Smith suit and Gromit sits with a Duchamp scarf and pair of Ray Ban ‘Wayfarers.’
Zooey Deschanel, Agy Deyn, Irina Lazareanu, Vanessa Paradis; the fashion world is known for it’s adopting of a different muse for each different season. However, while most muses can be linked by their quirky style, elfin features and statement look, Wallace & Gromit really stand out from the crowd.
That hasn’t stopped Harvey Nichols from enlisting their modeling talent for their latest campaign and decked out in D&G shirts, Alexander McQueen suits, Paul Smith scarfs and Ray Ban Wafarers, I’m actually quite jealous!
Read on for more details and pictures- it’s worth it, trust me!

While potentially worrying and probably not at all a good sign, Andy Warhol’s ‘Death Scenes’ have always interested me. His principle was that by repeating the same image of a man impaled on a lamp-post (that’s just one of the prints,) death became strangely banal. This blazer might not be all blood ‘n’ guts (which with McQueen’s history is rather surprising,) but it is undeniably interesting. With city scenes and a fitted shape, this jacket could be worn at work, in the park, at a party and even to a music festival. I like that Matches put it with jeans for a modern edge and if I could afford the £258 price tag, I would go for a crisp white shirt and an Alber Elbaz-style floppy bow-tie. In faded, purple velvet. *Sigh*

Seeing as Mr. West is an established favourite here at Brandish, we feel it only fair to link to a sneak preview of his Pastelle line. As until now pictures of Pastelle clothing have been a rare joy and although the line is due out in November, this doesn’t look set to change. If Vman went through a load of hassle to get the pictures – the tagline reads ‘if only you knew what we went through to get these pictures’ – what hope is there for the rest of us?
The clothes themselves are wearable, if a little unremarkable, but I’ll assume that given the probable high price point they’ll be made using impeccable tailoring and materials. See the rest of the pictures after the jump.

Bringing coat styles back from the dead seems to be a favourite of designers at the moment. They did it with the trench coat and they’re trying the same with pea coats, with stores from COS to Liberty stocking updated styles of this classic look.
With an item as classic as a pea coats it’s always possible that you could get a better version from a vintage store. Given the preference for slim fit styling right now, the vintage version could be a bit too outdated, so which do you go for?
While Topman do have a perfectly lovely version on their website, Vintage is the way to go with this one. This pea coat from Rokit is a better shade of navy blue and just has more character than the Topman version. It’s available from Rokit’s site and costs £30.

Steve Jones was seen on Monday with rumoured new girlfriend Fearne Cotton. A stylish, undoubtedly TV-friendly pair, I have to admit that I actually think Steve is better dressed on this particular date.
Let’s start with the leather jacket- this staple item is unexpectedly hard to pull off (without looking like a T-Bird; never a good look.) Jones’ version is masculine yet still on trend and the slim-fit detail means that your swagger won’t be shapeless. The white canvas brogues are a perfect summer piece and can be worn on holiday with a pair of shorts or actually in the UK with jeans, as seen here. Add black Wayfarer-style glasses and run the risk of looking like a trend-victim or try a non-Ray Ban style and be all-out original, fashion quirkiness will get you a Brandish A-Grade.

With the V-neck takeover that happened last winter, this year looks to see a comeback for the good ol’ crew neck and one of the best is this Rykiel Homme jumper.
It’s rare to see an oversized graphic jumper look understated, but RH have managed just that. Due to the relatively sombre colours of the design, it manages not to look too OTT whilst remaining eye catching. For a sweater £199.50 is a little steep, but it does make for a great statement piece so it would be worth the investment.

By the time he graduated from high school Alexander Olch was in possession of an impressive collection of 300 ties. He started off life as a film student but when he gave out ties as a wrap present to the cast the requests from friends started coming in and he’s not looked back since.
His website features a selection of ties that physically made me drool, and I don’t even wear ties! The crispness of the superfine wools and the soft weaves of the tweeds are pure eye-candy. To read more about Olch and his love for ties check out the feature at Valet
