The Sunday Times Style Magazine has, for me, always been a source of great fashion advice but on Sunday, it was the magazine’s new menswear columnist David Mills who I had my eye on.
In his first post (blogger-vocab just fills such a niche in the English language,) Mills talked of great British traditions and this ranged from an observation on cricket attire and classic socks to Huw Edward’s ties.
While entertaining, Mills is too negative and with lines like “Cricket kit used to be…” and “not for the office, please: nobody likes characters,” you are left feeling reprimanded by a headmaster and not advised by a fashion-conscious metrosexual.

(L-R: Hot Chip, Iggy Pop, The Little Ones)
I can’t say I’ve ever thought of looking at Playboy for clothing, but this Rock the Rabbit campaign is slowly changing my mind. In their second year they’ve roped established musicians like Iggy Pop, Daft Punk and Duran Duran amongst relative up and comers like Hot Chip and Tokyo Police Club.
The stand out of this collection is the Iggy Pop shirt which features a portrait of him with bunny ears. The close runners up are by The Little Ones and Hot Chip. You can buy a selection of these from Playboy’s site for £20.

Clothing, Designer Spotlight
By Will Reid on July 8th, 2008
For this season, the genius designer Stefano Pilati has decided to preview the label’s menswear collection in the form of seven incredibly arty mini-films. The first, called ‘Figures Entwining’, has an undeniable beauty and fragility, but I have to admit that I was a little freaked out by the androgynous and almost child-like models.
See after the jump for a look at all the preview films.

This is big. Bigger than finding out Liz Jones didn’t like Glastonbury (Shock Horror! A woman who calls cats ‘fur babies’ doesn’t like a muddy festival). I’m typing this so hard, I’m about to break my 3 year old Toshiba laptop. Lad Musician. Are. Coming. To. Blackbird. Read that sentence one more time and take it all in. I know, I can’t believe it either.
This means you can finally stop putting the Lad Musician site through the google translator – especially as it tends to hand back sentences like “The LAD original material for this season’s T-shirt material is nice and soft textures”. Blackbird are starting to stock Lad Musicians AW 2008/9 collection and it will show up in their online store from early August.

This new feature highlights the looks we love. Whether it be charity-shop mannequins or fashion week-shots, we will tell you which outfits are rocking our fashion-obsessed world. The first post of this feature looks at Richard Chai’s collection and the one look that I would literally kill for. (Okay, maybe not kill but beat up that glossy male model for sure.)
The whole collection had the feel of street-style and with increased ethnicity in the models used by different labels I think it is clear that the industry is beginning to move away from high-gloss and fake tans. Why go for prissy Versace-boy when you can be an adventurous Dunhill-man?
Check out those high-tops and that two-tone shirt and I doubt you will be able to resist the charm of a young designer only in his second season. I would say ‘out with the old’ but then again I believe it unnecessary to have yet another look at Yohji Yamamoto’s ghost model.

Clothing, Coats & Jackets, Sales

Given Material Boy’s Topman Lens collection, you’d assume that every boutique would be snapping at his clothing. It’s an understatement to say that this hasn’t been the case. One of the only places to buy Material Boy is Bespoke Boutique and as luck would have it, they’re having their summer sale. The pick of the bunch is this double breasted jersey jacket.
Made from 90% rayon and 10% lycra, it’s basically a cardigan like material cut into the shape of a coat. Bespoke boutique is a smaller shop and thus sells out a lot quicker than something like Oki-Ni would, so snap this up while you can for £105.

Sheer shirts have been on the catwalk for a while now and still haven’t been taken up by many men. The reason for this is obvious – not many men want to wear any kind of see through fabric. The plus side of sheer is that it can transform ubiquitous pieces into daring ones instantly. Like this Dries Van Noten shirt.
As Style Salvage noted, the key to wearing sheer is layering. A sheer shirt on its own would look horrific on anyone but a chest waxing model. But team it up with a simple shirt and you’ve good a summer look that will be way ahead of the times.

Clothing, Jeans & Trousers, Sales

Now that the sales are in full swing, it’s time to start picking out the true bargains. House of Fraser is usually too chav-tastic for me, but these J. Lindeberg jeans are a steal at £50. The simple design and dark wash make this a wardrobe staple instead of a regretful sales purchase, so you won’t have to worry about whether you’ll still like it in six months.
Something you should know is that J.Lindeberg run their clothing in indie sizes (i.e a size smaller than they are). So although these are labelled as straight leg, they fit like slim jeans.

Clothing, Designer Spotlight, Sales

In case you’ve been too lazy to scroll down the page, this is the second post of Matches sale items, this time focusing on Paul Smith.
Cobalt blue cardigan (£78): Cobalt blue is a great spring/summer colour and will make you stand out in a sea of grey cardigans.
Brown brogues (£165): Everyone needs a pair of brogues as they make any outfit much sharper. Round toe shoes are also a lot more grown up than the ‘I wish I played in the Horrors’ pointy toe look.
Brown leather bag (£188): I’m not even sure why I like this so much, but there’s something very charming about this bag.

Clothing, Designer Spotlight, Sales

Sales are getting larger by the minute which, depending on your financial situation, may be a great excuse to blow your earnings or some more online window shopping. The Matches sale is the largest yet and to accommodate its size, I’ve decided to focus on a designer at a time. This post will focus on Phillip Lim. Check after the jump for info on these items.

Clothing, Sales

With most sales selling out within hours these days, it’s refreshing to see that the Men a la mode sale still has stock an entire week after it started. There’s so many pieces on sale, you’ll probably be suffering from ‘embarrassment of riches’ syndrome. I just made that syndrome, but I bet someone out there has it.
To ease your pain, I’ve decided on the 4 best items in the sale (pictured above) – read all about them after the jump.

Seeing as Rykiel Homme is closing down, their clothes will make the transition from good piece to collector’s item. Before that transition is made, a lot of it goes on sale. This brings us to these Rykiel Homme jeans.
These jeans look like a toned down version of those radioactive Dior Homme jeans that Kanye West put up on his blog a while back. The muted colouring is still sharp enough to stand out from other jeans and they’re also about £200 cheaper than the Dior version. You can get these from the corner for £84.

The ASOS ltd 100 collection, their collaboration with designers from London College of Fashion, has been available online since June 16th and most of it has been bought already. Out of the pieces left, the best has to be this Sheepskin drape coat.
Most sheepskin coats stink of 70′s TV cops and John Motson, but this one manages to avoid that smell completely – instead giving off a strong fashion forward whiff. There’s no doubt that this coat is extravagant and would be too much for some people, but it retains a wearability that other fur coats just don’t have. The only downside is the £350 price tag, but if you can afford it then it would make a great standout piece.

Say what you like about 80s football hooligans, but even while they were battering people’s heads in with metal poles, they had style. Or that’s the popular perception nowadays anyway – I’m sure they couldn’t ALL have been clad in Lacoste. Of course we don’t call this style of dress hooliwear, or whatever – it’s “terrace fashion”, sweetheart.
When We Were Casuals is a site that caters to the gentleman who likes his Fila, Adidas and Barbour gear. Yes, you can find Reebok Classics there, but you can also get some slightly more unusual bits and bobs – howsabout a Christy’s Deerstalker with silk lining? You know it’s just the thing you need to finish off your outfit. Only £40, too.
