UniverCity jacket – part of Kanye’s Pastelle line?

By admin on June 17th, 2008

kanyecollegejkt.jpgKanye West has been spotted out in another piece of customised finery, this time a ‘UniverCity’ college jacket I suppose inspired by his educationally thematic album titles, complete with Murakami-illustrated bear motif on the back.

Speculation is leading as to whether the jacket is a part of his much anticipated clothing line Pastelle, which has been ‘coming soon’ for about two years. The only concrete releases coming so far are in the form of an eyewear linkup with Ksubi in October which will probably see a resurgance in those bastard shutter sunglasses.

So far, so Pharrell. The other ‘best dressed man in rap’ has already had his hand in sunglasses collaborations, letterman jackets and trainers with his Billionaire Boys Club line. It’ll be interesting to see if West will try his hand at some original pieces (a cut-and-sew line?) with Pastelle.

Several splashes of colour

By admin on June 13th, 2008

cosby.jpgI’ve gone on about the splash of colour trend in drips and draps for a good while now and I’ve finally found someone who likes it even more than I do. Men’s Vogue writer Amanda Brooks features a large selection of men past and present who have worked the colourful look. It even features a pre-ugly jumper Bill Cosby looking rather suave in a yellow turtleneck.

If you can’t be bothered to click that link, then I’ve featured my favourite looks after the jump.

Barack Obama Sons of Liberty t-shirt

By admin on June 9th, 2008

obamatee.jpgWhen you look at Gordon Brown’s face you realise there hasn’t been a politician as t-shirt friendly as Barack Obama in a long while. Add his vague slogans about change, which lend themselves well to t shirt captions and you have a prime candidate for an ironic t-shirt. Sons of Liberty were one of the quickest off the mark with this Back to the Future inspired top.

If you love the 80′s and Barack Obama, then you’re probably looking for your credit card right now, so there’s no need to convince you. Just bear in mind that if Barack suffers a George McGovern type defeat, then these shirts will become cruel jokes.

Lessons from Big Brother 9: how not to wear a suit

By admin on June 9th, 2008

luke_440x227.jpg

With Big Brother set to take over many people’s lives (in the UK) I thought it only fair that I start judging the male housemates style. I had planned to focus on everyone, but Luke really stood out from the crowd.

If you’re not on a first name basis with the contestant or – god forbid – don’t watch Big Brother, Luke’s a student who is a big fan of suits. However the suits he wears are the type that most students would have – oversized ugly ones. I appreciate the effort, but he hasn’t pulled the look off (see for yourself after the jump) instead of the powerful young man he no doubt envisions in his head, he looks like he stole his older brother’s suit.

Brandish Special: Men of Mumbai

By Will Reid on June 4th, 2008

mumbai9.jpgAfter visiting Mumbai I am more convinced than ever that fashion is one of those things that unites the World. In these let few days I have seen a harsh and gripping poverty but also a vibrancy and pride that made for some great sights. Prepare for home-made man bags, children challenging fashion rules and prints that wouldn’t look out of place on a Burberry runway. There is no insensitivity intended here but an appreciation for the contagious positivity so inspirationally radiated by these young Men of Mumbai.

Keep reading for great street-style shots and a rather phenomenal blend of fabrics, styles and looks.

Butt boosting underwear for men

By admin on June 2nd, 2008

buttpadcollage.jpgThis is another of those ‘who is actually buying these?’ items that are so bizarre they deserve another look. Apparently there’s a large number of men who feel their derriere is inadequate. That’s prompted Canadian company Bottom’s Up to make padded underwear that boosts your appearance at the back and front.

The sizes are labelled in American football terms, ranging from quarterback to fullback. Quarterback is quite normal looking whilst fullback looks like you’ve cut a basketball in half and stuffed it down the back of your trousers. More worrying than this is the front end of this underwear, which is basically a padded codpiece. If you’ve always been envious of Cameo, these are the pants for you.

Sample sale alert!

By admin on May 30th, 2008

SSS-BANNER.gif

I have some good news and bad news. The bad news is that the first Valentino sample sale finished yesterday. The good news is that the Secret Sample sale is still on and doesn’t finish until Saturday. They also feature everyone from Vivienne Westwood to Marc Jacobs and all at the usual sample sale discounts of up to 80%.

Directions to the 20th Century Theatre in Notting Hill are included after the jump.

Trendwatch: Old trends die hard

By admin on May 30th, 2008

outkasttee.jpgRemember that T-shirt trend we featured a good while back? It went from Band members to trainers to TV shows (Although no one took me up on my WIre offer) and now they’ve started featuring song lyrics. If you’ve ever wanted to show your appreciation for Andre 3000 and Big Boi in t-shirt form, this Rocksmith tee is the way to do it.

Even if you were a major fan of Outkast, you’d be forgiven for not immediately knowing where these lyrics came from. Heck, I didn’t know until I listened to the song again. Given the amount of knowledge needed to get the reference – who still listens to ATLiens? – this amounts to the highest form of musical snobbery. If you’re into that kind of thing, then you can get this from Karmaloop.

Fashion nightmare #1: Lycra

By admin on May 29th, 2008

gladiatorlloyd.jpgWarning: This post contains a link to the Daily Mail website. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Famous model/serial WAG Danielle Lloyd has been pictured out with one of the Gladiators on their way to tacky nightclub Faces (which I live a stones throw away from, I’ll have you know). I originally tried to ignore this but this picture is so horrific I had to share it with you all.

I’m not sure why certain men feel that everyone has to know that they visit the gym, but this lycra as outerwear fad needs to be nipped in the bud. It’s the clothing equivalent of yelling ‘I [ump iron!’ There are far more subtle ways of displaying your physique without resorting to wearing gymwear on a night out.

Is pink one of the colours of the season?

By admin on May 28th, 2008

greyone.jpgIn the London paper today, they’ve stated that silvery grey is the colour of the season. I doubt it will be, due to grey shirts showing sweat more prominently than other colours but that’s not my main steak with this article. More problematic is the colour they’re teaming it up with – pink. Back when men started wearing pink, it was a statement of a softer side, the kind of man who cries watching Sex and the City before going back to chop some wood and crush a beer can on his forehead.

The problem is that in the last couple of years, pink has become very popular amongst men. Specifically, the FHM bloke, who have claimed the pink shirt as their own with the same vigour they claimed Ben Sherman shirts and misogyny. For anyone who doesn’t want to be mistaken for a swaggering idiot, this means pink off the colour menu.

How tight is too tight?

By admin on May 23rd, 2008

f37e.jpgVictoria Beckham would not approve of this new trend. Apparently fans of Mustang skinline jeans (a brand that makes Cheap Monday jeans look baggy) are filming themselves in their skin tight jeans and posting it on youtube. I’m not sure whether this is a hoax, fetish or trend – but for argument’s sake let’s call it the latter.

I could make a host of predictable jokes about cutting off circulation and the like, but I’m just going to let the following video (featured after the jump) speak for itself. It’s different, that’s for sure.

Top 20 Cannes fashion moments

By admin on May 23rd, 2008

redford.jpg

Men.Style.com has a retrospective of its top 20 Cannes fashion moments. Most of the fashion moments come from the 60′s and 70′s, the 80′s has two looks, the 90′s has three and the noughties only get one, that being Brad Pitt’s Tom Ford suit.

The fact that there was only one choice from the 00′s must prove that male movie stars have stopped making an effort. It’s like they’re all afraid of being featured on the worst dressed list and have decided to dress in black suit and tie wherever they go. I’m resisting the urge to go on a rant, but you know there’s a problem when sartorial dullard Daniel Craig gets feted for his fashion sense.

Yoko Devereaux SupermarketHQ sale

By admin on May 20th, 2008

ydcollage copy.jpg

Sometimes a bargain is too good to pass on, regardless of what season the clothing’s designed for. This Yoko Devereaux double breasted cardigan is currently going for $32, which is 75% off the retail price. Other bargains are this trench coat for $49 and this Queen print shirt for $17.

The downside to this near giveaway is that they only ship to the United States and Canada, anyone living elsewhere will have to look at the pictures and dream of wearing these pieces. I’m not sure what’s worse: missing a sale or finding a sale won’t deliver to your neck of the woods. These are the kind of dilemmas that should be going on the Jeremy Kyle show.

Brandish Poll: High-Waisted Jeans

By Will Reid on May 20th, 2008

topman.jpgWhat a surreal start to the week; trawling Topman for a Monday Morning boost, I was hoping for a few print t-shirts but instead discovered the horror of the new ‘Premium High Waist Slim Jeans.‘ Yes, that’s right; after drop-crotch and MC Hammer (I don’t actually want to touch this) denim, we are being given the chance to try out the latest jean trend. The high waist has failed to get women on side à la skinny jeans simply because they are impossible to wear. In indigo, 100% cotton and selling for £45, I am left wondering if it is really worth the risk. What do you think?

See our poll after the jump!

Troglodyte Homunculus Shirts

By admin on May 15th, 2008

troghomshirts.jpg

When you describe a new brand to someone, it’s usually best that their name is short and rolls off the tongue. Clearly this rulebook wasn’t handed down to Troglodyte Homunculus, who seem intent on making any admirers of their work sound like idiots – just try and say it out loud in a conversation.

Given TH’s moniker, you’d be forgiven for thinking the clothes would be super sharp suits instead of the lightweight, casual check shirts that they make. Designed by the designers from Seize sur Vingt, the shirts are designed to do double up as smart and casual wear, with checks being the main theme. Prices start from $156 and you can get these from Blackbird.
