WISHLIST: Bape ‘Panda’ Hoodie

By Will Reid on October 13th, 2008

This season is one of continued focus on shape; the tulip skirt, the peplum, the over-sized collar. I have always leaned towards a slimmer-fit for hoodies and trousers but this season I plan to try something new. This ‘Panda‘ hoodie from Bape fits the bill perfectly, it is quite baggy and voluminous but it has a fitted waist resulting in a highly fashionable silhouette.

There are two types of the hoodie (one in fleece and one in cotton) and four possible colours (although the black is exclusive to the Bape store in Aoyama, Japan! Buy now for pre-Pharrell originality!

Tavi Tells The Truth: A Man And His Gold Coat

By Will Reid on October 3rd, 2008

goldjacket.jpgTavi, the girl-wonder-blogger with a fashion sense so incredibly brilliant I feel like crying when I ‘m reading her blog, has found this picture and decided that she wants to marry the wearer of this great, gold jacket.

I’m okay with just being his friend but it is an undoubtedly fantastic image.

Now, the only question is where to find that jacket.

It’s Ecko and I don’t want to burn it!

By Jonathan Smith on October 1st, 2008

pECKO1-4814180dt.jpg

Is Star Wars cool? Since 1977 that question has been a divide of people, and one over which there is little consensus. Either way you look at it though you have to admit that it has given us some iconic imagery and characters, Darth Vader, Boba Fett and the humble Storm Trooper, which is the inspiration for this Marc Ecko hoody.

I don’t really like Star Wars nor do I like dressing like a 6 year old but I have to admit this is kinda cool, you could wear it like a normal hoody then you put your hood up and BAM! Storm Trooping time.

Available from Ecko online store. More images after the jump.

Stussy x Schott – yeah seriously

By Jonathan Smith on September 22nd, 2008

stussy-schott-wool-onestar-2.jpg

Not since the Aguilera/Bratman marriage has the world seen such an unlikely pairing, street fashion brand Stussy has gotten together with Whetherspoons favourite Schott to work on this jacket. Made from cow hide and wool the coat looks… really good… am I the only one who’s genuinely shocked? Pencilled in for release in November, there is no mention of price but at a guess I’m thinking- not cheap.

Lad Musician A/W 08 highlights

By admin on September 12th, 2008

ladmusician.jpg
Lad Musician are clearly a brand willing to take some risks. For example, take their studded gloves (pictured above). Although it’s a look associated with people who wear new rock boots, it looks surprisingly wearable, although it would look better if it were just polka dots. The other risk is their inclusion of denim jackets.

These jackets are risky not because no-one is wearing. It’s risky because everything who is wears them horrifically, matching them to their denim jeans and looking like rejects from a Bruce Springsteen lookalike competition. I’m not about to call it a comeback, but denim jackets might just be a viable alternative for people looking to change it up from bombers and trench coats. Lad Musician is available from blackbird and the site’s webshop.

Reader request: All Saints’ mac

By admin on September 10th, 2008

all saints women's mac.jpgI’ve had a few emails since our last reader request which I’m still working through, one of which was a really lovely message from a reader called Ade who says: “I’ve seen a very nice mac in All Saints. At present, they only do a women’s version.”

He wants to know whether you think this mac would look good on men and if All Saints have any plans to do a men’s version. As far as the actual All Saints mac goes I say why not just buy the women’s one?

Topshop’s skinny jeans are renowned for being the best kept secret in many a man’s closet and it’s not like us women haven’t been raiding men’s wardrobes for aeons. The mac has a loose unstructured fit which would suit both men and women. I think it would work well as part of a smart layered outfit with skinny or slim trousers.

I’ve got in touch with the All Saints press office but while I wait for their response what do you think?

Email me your thoughts and questions to isabelle [at] shinymedia.com.

Brandish Poll: JT in Frock Horror Scandal?

By Will Reid on September 9th, 2008

Being the face of a Givenchy fragrance pretty much cements you as a style star (not that I would know but one must work on assumption when speaking of Britney-dating, ex-N*Sync stars!) Well, I was bitterly disappointed in Justin Timberlake’s outfit at the Fashion Rocks concert last week. JT wore a grey blazer from his new ‘William Rast’ range and a pair of hideous turn-up jeans with an odd silk tie- seemingly cut in half.

Is it just me who’s shocked by this lack of style sense? Vote in our poll below!

WISHLIST: Alexander McQueen Photo-Print Blazer Down To £258 from £865!

By Will Reid on August 22nd, 2008

Thumbnail image for mcqueen.jpgWhile potentially worrying and probably not at all a good sign, Andy Warhol’s ‘Death Scenes’ have always interested me. His principle was that by repeating the same image of a man impaled on a lamp-post (that’s just one of the prints,) death became strangely banal. This blazer might not be all blood ‘n’ guts (which with McQueen’s history is rather surprising,) but it is undeniably interesting. With city scenes and a fitted shape, this jacket could be worn at work, in the park, at a party and even to a music festival. I like that Matches put it with jeans for a modern edge and if I could afford the £258 price tag, I would go for a crisp white shirt and an Alber Elbaz-style floppy bow-tie. In faded, purple velvet. *Sigh*

Time for a pea coat revival?

By admin on August 20th, 2008

peacoats.jpg
Bringing coat styles back from the dead seems to be a favourite of designers at the moment. They did it with the trench coat and they’re trying the same with pea coats, with stores from COS to Liberty stocking updated styles of this classic look.

With an item as classic as a pea coats it’s always possible that you could get a better version from a vintage store. Given the preference for slim fit styling right now, the vintage version could be a bit too outdated, so which do you go for?

While Topman do have a perfectly lovely version on their website, Vintage is the way to go with this one. This pea coat from Rokit is a better shade of navy blue and just has more character than the Topman version. It’s available from Rokit’s site and costs £30.

Celeb Style: Steve Jones’ Summer Lovin’

By Will Reid on August 20th, 2008

stevejones.jpgSteve Jones was seen on Monday with rumoured new girlfriend Fearne Cotton. A stylish, undoubtedly TV-friendly pair, I have to admit that I actually think Steve is better dressed on this particular date.

Let’s start with the leather jacket- this staple item is unexpectedly hard to pull off (without looking like a T-Bird; never a good look.) Jones’ version is masculine yet still on trend and the slim-fit detail means that your swagger won’t be shapeless. The white canvas brogues are a perfect summer piece and can be worn on holiday with a pair of shorts or actually in the UK with jeans, as seen here. Add black Wayfarer-style glasses and run the risk of looking like a trend-victim or try a non-Ray Ban style and be all-out original, fashion quirkiness will get you a Brandish A-Grade.

Oliver Spencer jacket from Sarah Coggles

By admin on August 18th, 2008

oliver spencer jacket grey sarah coggles.jpg

Neat mod-ish tailoring and large retro buttons make for an appealing jacket which is neither fusty nor faddy. If you’ve already got a half dozen zip up nylon jackets and fancy something a little different and smarter then snap this Oliver Spencer jacket up from Sarah Coggles for the sale price of £117.50. The warm dove-tone is less harsh than a straight grey and the linen mix ramps up the formality a notch.

Embrace your inner lumberjack at Oi Polloi

By Jonathan Smith on August 12th, 2008

2626-300.jpgIt’s a good day for a plaid lover like myself, with trend reports claiming that the American working man is ready to have his time in the fashion lime light the new A/W 08 range from Levi’s has dropped at Oi Polloi.

I’ve been a fan of Levi’s Vintage denim for some time now but have always felt that the range as a whole has left a little to be desired, however this year the line up looks great with some of the usual suspect such as 501′s and 505′s and some awesome (you guessed it) plaid shirts.

So embrace your inner lumberjack and check out the full range after the jump.

Luca Rubinacci in lavender and mustard

By admin on August 6th, 2008

luca rabinucci sartorialist scott schuman.jpgThe Sartorialist snapped Luca Rubinacci, son of Italian tailor Mariano Rubbinaci looking resplendent in a tricky combination of lavender and mustard.

His white jeans add freshness to the look and note the pale stripe shirt, which stops the outfit from looking too blocky. I like the quirky touch of a few (Indian ?) bangles and I can never overlook a pair of tasselled loafers.

After the jump I’ve picked out a few lavender and mustard items to get the look, and a great A.P.C shirt to tone it all down.

Burberry Prorsum and Full Circle bold navy jackets

By admin on July 31st, 2008

burberry prorsum mac double breasted full circle matches navy blue cobalt.jpgBurberry’s double breasted jacket is such a captivating shade of blue. The luminous shade is midway between a navy and a cobalt and really draws the eye in without being too attention-grabbing. Unfortunately with a £1,018 pricetag there aren’t many people who will be able to actually afford it. Full Circle’s mac which comes in at £170 may not be the same luxurious blend of wool and cashmere but the colour is spot on and the fit is good.

Comme Des Garcons blazer

By admin on July 29th, 2008

commepictures.jpg
Lining has been an interesting part of blazers for a while now, with inventive designers using it to showcase a contrasting colour or pattern. Comme Des Garçons have gone one step further with this lining print of an anime-like boxer. It’s the kind of the lining that seriously makes you consider walking around in the same pose the models doing above. You can get this from the usual outlets once they start stocking the A/W collections.
