Outfit Pick: Chinos, Tassels and Binary Clocks

By Will Reid on September 26th, 2008

outfitpickloafers.jpg

This outfit is based around my fashion task de jour (as if I could make that sound any more pretentious!) That task would be to make tasselled loafers wearable while avoiding the Ralph Lauren, polo-player trap so closely associated with this (in)famous yet iconic shoe.

I added items that were almost too pop-y for their own good; a binary watch, a Cassette-belt, a Madonna/80s idol tee from and a pair of Alexander McQueen cropped trousers from Oki-Ni.

This is a blend of vintage and modern that I would be more than willing to wear!

Brandish Poll: Would You Wear Unisex Clothing?

By Will Reid on September 23rd, 2008

American Apparel, the brand synonymous with androgyny and men in skintight jeans, has just launched their Unisex Oxford Shirt. I have three sisters and I’m no stranger to borrowing the odd jumper (actually, that would be reclaiming,) and I have in past borrowed Ralph Lauren shirts and vintage blazers for a better fit and a slimmer silhouette. Russell Brand, a man who walks on to a talk-show in a jersey tunic dress and girl’s jeans from Topshop but still manages to be a sex god, would be a great example of unisex dressing at its best but what do you think? Is it worth the sartorial risk when you might see a girl in the same tee as you?

Would you go Unisex- vote in our poll after the jump!

Ex-Dior Homme Designer Jordan Askill Bejewels DSM!

By Will Reid on September 22nd, 2008

JAskill1_Pendant08_b.jpgJordan Askill, a designer whose work for Dior Homme and Ksubi has cemented him as a name to keep an eye on, has launched a jewellery collection at Dover Street Market (DSM.) Dover Street Market is a fashion emporium founded by Rei Kawakubo and her husband and it has become known for its artistic installations, exclusive lines and designer collaborations. In previous years, we’ve seen a hotel room designed by Alber Elbaz of Lanvin and a Tiki-hut check-out.

Akill’s jewellery line is made up of edgy, androgynous pieces that could be worn by either guys or girls and Vogue reports that “the debut jewellery offering features bird, boy and rose motifs as fragile and rare entities – the flora, fauna and humanity of life – set in a claw to denote them as “precious memories to capture“. Lovely.

Love The Look: Mark Ronson at Vivienne Westwood

By Will Reid on September 19th, 2008

Mark Ronson has always been a tiptop fashion star and this year has been awash with his sartorial influence. From the stripes and Mod look of early 2008 to the sharp tailoring in kooky fabrics. From the ’50s rock-star (read: Elvis) to the fur-clad aristo-geek.

Now, Ronson is taking it upon himself to lead the way with the trapper-hat wearer, ‘Lightspeed Champion,’ look as first established by our (soon to depart-) Jason Dike. Mark looked great at Vivienne Westwood’s after-show party last night with his fur-lined coat, oversized glasses and slick boots.

Rene Gurskov “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me” collection

By admin on September 18th, 2008

I received a very exciting email from Danish designer Rene Gurskov, who wanted to share with me his latest collection.

After taking some time to look at the clothes the words that spring to mind are thoughtful streetwear. The influences are trend-led without being too obvious and are wearable so that I could imagine even my most un-fashiony friends wearing the pieces. Gurskov says he wants to give even a “small town boy a chance to look hard boiled” which is a great description.

Barack Obama and Terry Richardson- Better Than Stefano Pilati in Interview?

By Will Reid on September 17th, 2008

terry-richardson-obama-photo.jpgWhen I saw this image on Hypebeast this morning, I instantly wanted to put it on Brandish and have it sent right round the world on some type of banner. Unfortunately, I found out 5 minutes later that the hotel I’m staying at (Grand Hyatt Mumbai,) has given the entire floor above me to a call centre which means that it takes my computer about half an hour to Google something and the thought of uploading a picture onto Movable Type almost brings me to tears.

Anyway here it is: a picture sure to go down in fashion history.

WISHLIST: MR P T-Shirt by Tim Lahan

By Will Reid on September 17th, 2008

mrptshirt.jpgAs much as I hate label-whores and Louis Vuitton/Gucci-style designs that are made only for the monogram printed across them, I have to admit that my Sartorial ‘id,’ survives vicariously through Kanye West’s ‘Universecity’ blog.

Often, we catch (not very) subtle glimpses of candy-coloured designer goods but sometimes we’re treated to the odd indie-flash buy. Like this ‘Mr P’ t-shirt designed by Tim Lahan. It’s quirky, fun, lighthearted and a piece that you could wear with anything.

Not recommended for those with a fear of pigeons; if that includes you, then I apologise for exposing you to what must surely be like The Ring + The Grudge + The Shining (in pigeon-fearing terms.)

Outfit Pick: Gauche, Awkward and Isaac…

By Will Reid on September 16th, 2008

outfitpick2.jpgWith a new of series of Heroes about to begin, the unfortunate death of Yves Saint Laurent and the number of Clark Kent-y characters about in the most recent blockbusters, my style radar is tuned to the male who’s gauche, awkward and geeky in the best way possible. Think of 1970s art students carrying open sketchbooks around Paris, Isaac Mendez of Heroes lounging around his studio in over-sized chinos and Marc Jacobs around his grunge era (which means big glasses, baggy jumpers and lots of corduroy.) I took a risk with mixing the denim shirt with dark jeans but the two items together are a wearable look that anyone can pull off.

Check out the product details after the jump and see how geeky you can get this winter- Argyle jumper anyone?

Lad Musician A/W 08 highlights

By admin on September 12th, 2008

ladmusician.jpg
Lad Musician are clearly a brand willing to take some risks. For example, take their studded gloves (pictured above). Although it’s a look associated with people who wear new rock boots, it looks surprisingly wearable, although it would look better if it were just polka dots. The other risk is their inclusion of denim jackets.

These jackets are risky not because no-one is wearing. It’s risky because everything who is wears them horrifically, matching them to their denim jeans and looking like rejects from a Bruce Springsteen lookalike competition. I’m not about to call it a comeback, but denim jackets might just be a viable alternative for people looking to change it up from bombers and trench coats. Lad Musician is available from blackbird and the site’s webshop.

Andre 3000 talks about Benjamin Bixby

By admin on September 11th, 2008

andre benjamin the sartorialist pitti uomo.jpg
As news of Benjamin Bixby continues to trickle out, Mr. 3000 is finally beginning to do interviews about the clothing line. American Esquire’s interview is far from in-depth (with a grand total of two questions) but it’s better than nothing. Check out the interview after the jump.

WISHLIST: A Closet Session with à la Fake Karl

By Will Reid on September 10th, 2008

anna wintour and karl lagerfeld.jpg

Now this looks like my kind of party!

I feel like a horrible, disgusting sorry excuse for a fashion follower. Why am I bound by such emotional wounds? Why do I feel so sick-minded and wrong?

Answer: I want an invitation to Fake Karl’s closet. Yes, it’s true! I, Will Reid, couldn’t think of anything this week that could be desired more than a day of hanging upside down with Anna and Karl sipping our “respective drinks.”

And don’t even tell me you don’t want to too. There’s even a Yohji Yamamoto-shaped hole in the window!

Brandish Poll: JT in Frock Horror Scandal?

By Will Reid on September 9th, 2008

Being the face of a Givenchy fragrance pretty much cements you as a style star (not that I would know but one must work on assumption when speaking of Britney-dating, ex-N*Sync stars!) Well, I was bitterly disappointed in Justin Timberlake’s outfit at the Fashion Rocks concert last week. JT wore a grey blazer from his new ‘William Rast’ range and a pair of hideous turn-up jeans with an odd silk tie- seemingly cut in half.

Is it just me who’s shocked by this lack of style sense? Vote in our poll below!

Love The Look: Menswear Maestro Michael Bastian at Fashion Rocks

By Will Reid on September 9th, 2008

Condé Nast’s fifth Fashion Rocks event was hardly devoid of well-dressed men: Valentino, Justin Timberlake (who’s fashion-savvy has become a matter of debate…well, for me anyway,) Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford (who’s rumoured to have scored an up-coming VMAN cover.) My point is that, for a menswear designer, Michael Bastian more than held his own in this pantheon of celebs.

I love his vintage-looking blazer as well as his loafers and with an open shirt and a pair of well-tailored grey shorts, he is a vision of relaxed but high-fashion cool.

Notice the subtle pocket-square (an emblem of any well-dressed male) and devour this style inspiration.

Do You Dare: YSL Touche Eclat for Men!

By Will Reid on September 8th, 2008

toucheeclat2.jpgHungover, Sleep-deprived, Over-worked, Unfit, Uncared for, Blemish-ridden; not exactly the ingredients for a healthy and handsome male are they? Well now, who cares? After you’ve smudged the Guyliner and poked yourself in the eye with Manscara, you might feel yourself in need of a bit of YSL’s new Touche Eclat concealer for men.

Yes, the weapon of choice for fashion editors and socialites the world over has been produced (fragrance free) for men, allowing the male species to live a life of clear skin and hidden ugliness.

The only question is, after previous (and let’s face it, unsuccessful attempts) at man make-up, will this gold pen/magic wand be bought up by us men?
