Regret, Disappointment, A sense of ‘I wish I could have done something’. These are all feelings you get when you miss a sale. Topman have tried to sneakily put the entire Lens range on sale and hoped no one noticed. That means £45 Mjolk trench coats, £15 Material Boy t-shirts and £25 Carolyn Massey shirts all slipping between our fingers.
German Born, New York based designer Robert Geller is a very new kid on the block. His label only launched in A/W 07, after working at Marc Jacobs, revamping Cloak and creating a women’s wear range called Harald. The following sentence will sound a little odd, but I’m going to look at a S/S 2008 range while we’re actually in the same season.
This is probably a good time to admit that before Brandish, I wasn’t too involved in the world of menswear (only now do I realise how much I was missing out on!) However, Thom Browne is one of those designers who manages to capture two opposite industries with just the cut of a hem and the snip of a gorgeous thread. His signature look of shrunken suit, sports socks and loafers has cemented him as a style icon for both sexes and his shows have even inspired my own trend reports. Now, Style.com has talked to him about his exercise regime (although running daily on tracks including Central Park, the Eiffel Tower and the Imperial Gardens of Japan are a luxury rather inaccessible to us hoi polloi.) But I really must warn you that the vid may leave you feeling slightly inferior- after all how many of us can claim to have completed 15 marathons worldwide and still be running in Thom Browne knitwear?
Snoop Dogg has some explaining to do! Over at Fashionista, they have spotted this rather blatant copy of Jean Paul Gaultier’s ‘Le Male’ perfume bottle for his new Landy Cognac ‘Desir’ bottle design. Snoop Dogg is the latest spokesperson for the alcohol brand but he seems to be running dry of ideas (pardon that shocking pun!) So what do you think? Horrific homage or careless copy?
After too many torturous nights of Cotton Eye Joe and Cowboy-clad cankles, customised boots have been effectively ruined. From D&G to Calvin Klein, embellished boots have done the rounds this season and I want in on the action. My brown leather Chelsea’s have blurred into wardrobe background and now I’m looking out for glittery, brightly coloured boots without any Simon Cowell heel.
Pudel is only three years old, but has already built a reputable name based on its androgynous aesthetic. Headed by Lina Österman, a Central Saint Martins graduate, whilst clearly influenced by Swedish minimalist design, Pudel also has its roots in ‘traditional Belgian deconstructionism’.
So I am back from a rather long and horribly full-on camping trip and I’ve decided that maybe I need to be a bit less full-on when it comes to fashion. How much longer can we go on with these studs and chunks of waxed crocodile leather- to be honest I am worryingly attracted to Jason’s idea of living in pyjamas for a while.
Curiously, pyjamas are fairly high on the agenda right now. Between Fantastic Man’s latest photoshoot, and Alexis Petridis weighing up the practicalities of sleepwear-chic; it sounds like PJ-inspired looks are being talked about with completely straight faces in fashion circles.
If you like the colours of the Jaime Hayon shoes but think they’re a little low cut, you’ll love these Diet Butcher Slim Skin hi-tops. Although high tops are about as rare as a Fred Perry collaboration these days the colourways on these make them stand out from the dayglo dunk wearing crowd.
In London? Still have money in your account? In you answered yes to both these questions, then you have no reason to miss out on this DWS Menswear sample sale. If you’ve forgiven Evisu for flooding the market back in the late 90’s then you can pick up some of their items alongside Vivienne Westwood, Hardy Amies and Hugo Boss amongst others. If there’s a better reason to go on a pasta diet for the rest of the month, feel free to let me know.
Now that COS is a success, with three more stores set to open this year, it’s nice to look back on what they wanted to achieve and whether they did so. Thankfully, this Monocle.com video allows you to do just that. For those who haven’t read Monocle magazine, it’s basically an international current affairs magazine with a website that has clearly been designed with the magazine, not as an afterthought.
You know when you’ve become so accustomed to something that things that should look odd don’t anymore? That’s how I’m starting to feel with the pyjamas look. Wearing your pyjamas outside of the house should make you look like an extra from One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest – instead I’m thinking that it’s quite a wearable look. As long as you don’t stray too far from your house.
