Diesel’s futuristic new ad campaign… but some things never change

Diesel’s latest "Human After All" Autumn/Winter ad campaign sees their models posing in everyday situations that wouldn’t usually make the average person bat an eyelid – a couple having a bit of a domestic, a delayed flight and a bloke baffled by flatpack furniture amongst some of the stylish adverts. Nothing none of us haven’t been through before, unless you’re a hermit. But all are set in a futuristic environment that feature flying cars, an accident in a cloning facility and trouble with cooking a pancake on a space station. Not so normal, eh?

The campaign itself isn’t particularly novel, I’m sure it’s been done before, but it looks great and is a departure from the terribly po-faced campaigns that you get with a lot of other fashion houses. The clothes also look great and I’m looking forward to when they’re finally released.

Ten Bill shirts only ten bills

I like clothes. I like clothes that look good. I like clothes that look good and don’t cost me a month’s wage. And that’s why I like Ten Bill tees. All of their t-shirts, as the name suggests cost $10, so that’s about a fiver for us lot. Okay, so you have to figure in shipping, which is rather on the high side ($21!) but even then you’re still getting a quality tee for about £15 or £16.

Series two of Ten Bill tees has arrived this week and they’ve got some fantastic designs, like the "eight-feet under" shirt that features a sweet killer octopus print. The other thing I like about Ten Bills are their "models". Rather than chiseled jaws and rock hard abs a la Abecrombie, they seem to go for jowls and a beer belly, just how real blokes are supposed to look…

Gavin Pierre Medford to helm wardrobe design in new Jimi Hendrix biopic

I’m surprised it’s actually taken this long to do, but film makers have finally decided to exploit the memory of Jimi Hendrix and make a biopic of his life. Do I hear the sound of Oliver Stone’s little mitts gleefully being rubbed together? I’m guessing "yes".

However, we’re not too concerned about the politics of how the film’s going to be made. We really just want to know if it’s gonna look good, and with Gavin Pierre Medford heading up the wardrobe design, hopefully it will. Gavin was winner of the "Best Street Wear" award at last year’s UK Fashion Awards and is an associate lecturer at the London College of Fashion so he’s got the credentials behind him. Let’s just hope he can do the great man some justice in the fashion department.

Topman skull plimsolls Vs Vans skull slipons

I’m a sucker for skull designs on any piece of clothing. Whether it’s a throwback to my youthful days as a heavy metal head-banger or just a subconscious fascination with death, I love the toothy, empty-eyed grin of a fleshless cranium staring back at me from the fabric of my garments. Hmmm… maybe I do need help.

So when I saw these Topman plimsolls (right picture) adorned with pirate-style insignia, I was a little intrigued. Even the £30 price tag I felt was more than reasonable. But then I realised something. Wouldn’t I rather have a pair of Vans (left)? They’re only a couple of quid more (£32) and I know what I’m getting for my money. But there’s the rub, I’ve always worn Vans, so perhaps I’m not the most qualified judge, being completely biased toward them.

What I’d like to know is what you guys think. Which pair would you go for?

Bond villain Mads Mikkelsen fronts new A/W H&M campaign

Scarfaced poker-villain Le Chiffre is the new face of H&M’s latest men’s fashion range. Well, not Le Chiffre, but Mad Mikkelsen, the actor who plays him in Casino Royale. Although personally I think more international terrorists should branch out into the world of high street fashion. Carlos the Jackal fronting Topman? Osama strutting his stuff in Next gear? Why not?

Mads isn’t such a big actor over here as he is in his native Denmark, but H&M are hoping he’ll make an impact with the new collection across Europe. I’m hoping he will too. It’s refreshing to see someone modeling men’s clothes who looks like a proper bloke and not the simpering, androgynous prissy boys who seem to grace most shop-displays these days.

Lanvin A/W menswear show

Lanvin showcased a broad spectrum of designs at their latest fashion show in Paris, although much of the collection was harmonized by sporty overtones and school uniform themes. Between those, Lanvin had time for a baggy, tai chi style outfit and an indie-formal collection of suits.

The fashion house’s most outstanding designs are those above. The sporting influence shows through in the loose, cuffed trousers and fresh, flowing materials of the left and centre ensembles. The outfit on the far right is inspired by an amalgamation of Eton and city schoolboys, with the formal, striped blazer offset against the urban-style hooded jacket.

Red Torpedo underwear

It’s unusual enough that Red Torpedo underwear comes balled up inside an aluminium can, but when said underwear also comes with a CD of unsigned bands, it starts to seem even more bizarre. Add to that the oddly placed opening for "access" purposes and you’ve got some strange pants. Despite, or inspite of these factors, I think they’re quite cool.

Their range of smart briefs and jockeys put your moth eaten, old y-fronts to shame and, at £11-12, are quite reasonable considering you get the CD thrown into the mix. So there’s really no excuse for not giving your little man some dignity and buying a couple of pairs.

Yves Saint Laurent Spring 2008

The Menswear catwalk season is in
full swing with shows over the weekend in Paris from Louis Vuitton, Hermes and
Yves Saint Laurent under the direction of Italian designer Stefano Pilati.

Pilati has been creating a YSL pret-a-porter
line for a few seasons and has had great success with womenswear but has
slightly struggled with menswear. It’s inevitable that taking on such an
enormous task as taking over a world-renowned brand such as Yves Saint Laurent is
going to be difficult. Over recent years there have been plenty of examples as
world famous designers either retire or pass away, including Coco Chanel and
Christian Dior whose respective collections have been continued and modernised.

Pukas – Vans Collaboration

Pukas, the leading surf company in Europe has teamed up with Vans to release these rather neat-o slip-ons, utilising the iconic "Vans Check" and integrating it with their own five-prong star motif. The results are four classic Vans designs that stand out from the usual black/white colour scheme that is so, maybe "too", well known. The great thing about the Pukas collaboration collection is that it will only be available as a limited run, so once you have some, you don’t need to fear that a million emo kids will have the same pair. Unless they decide to do a re-issue of course…

French Connection sale

I’m probably a bit late on the uptake with this one, especially in light of all you au courant gentlemen with your fingers firmly on the pulse, French Connection are having a sale, with up to 50% off many items.
FCUK aren’t doing to well in my opinion at the moment, which is probably something to do with the erratic nature of their catalogue, swinging wildly between Reiss style sophistication and Burton tackiness. Having said that, you should be able to pick up a couple of bargains. Read after the jumps for a list of a few choice items I’ve found.

Patrik Ervell, the king of chic sportswear

I’m a little obsessed with the sportswear trend at the moment, last seen way back in the ’90s. But it’s not about wearing your tatty old tracksuit; as if fashion is ever that simple! It’s much more formal and minimal than that:

imagine a very smart old gent, wearing suit trousers, shirt, tie and an anorak. On the (admittedly London only) high street H&M’s offshoot COS is perfect for this kind of thing, as is Uniqlo.

The king of chic sportswear is Patrik Ervell, a Swede who has settled in the US giving what he calls "classic American sportswear pushed in slightly more bizarre territory" a distinctly Scandinavian feel.

Calvin Klein at Milan’s men’s fashion week

Calvin Klein’s utilisation of sunset-pastel hues stood out on the runway at Milan’s men’s fashion week, where much of the offering from other designers were simple blacks and grey shades. That’s not to say that Klein didn’t exhibit icy-white ensembles and crisp, black shirts, but his strongest display came in puces, powder blues and pale khaki. This warm palette offsets against the clean, closely cut fit of the suits, and shirts with hard, military collars.

Going on from that, some of Klein’s collection did have a military inspired look about them. I love the uniform fluidity of the middle outfit, which is only broken up with a cargo belt and a subtle, light salmon crew neck tee.

Jefferson Hack speaks to Christopher Bailey in his new column for the Telegraph

JeffhackIt’s a great time for menswear at the moment, we are seeing more adventurous designs -on the catwalks at least- and the masculine influence in womenswear is testament to people’s interest in all things menswear. Hilary Alexander recently commissioned Jefferson Hack to write a fortnightly column for the Telegraph about menswear and it’s quality. In his latest column he spoke to Christopher Bailey, creative director of Burberry, about his influences and the
recent campaign that features the cream of British musical talent and beauty including Patrick Wolf, Agyness Deyn, and Larrikin Love.

Fila Zizzore Top

It seems like you can’t buy an item of clothing these days without it being an "original", "distressed" or "vintage", such is our obsession with fashion of the past. Not that I’m too bothered. Most "modern" clothing is crap. Just look at the Nu-Rave look. Twats.

In truth, I do have a bit of an axe to grind about "distressed" clothes. I just think it’s lazy. But when it’s done right, vintage reproductions are spot on, especially when it’s concerning sportswear. I mean, just look at the Carlo Gruber vest I covered last week. Sublime!

Following on from that, the oft forgotten Italian sportswear make, Fila, have their own vintage range which recalls early 1980s football apparel. My favourite piece so far is this Zizzore track-top (£60) which comes in the original Fila colours. It’s got a bit of a contemporary mod feel to it, probably because of the colour scheme. With that in mind, a simple, gingham shirt underneath would look great.

EIO tee

After complaining yesterday about wanting something a little different printed on my tees, my prayers have been suddenly answered by EIO clothing, makers of some seriously original men and womens clothes. They have some great looking prints, with big, brash colours that are great for Summer on one hand, like this Beach Babe tee (£25) or something a bit more subtle for wearing out for the night.

My pick of the lot though is the Galleon tee (£25) shown, mainly because it’s a pirate ship, but also because of the design is in gold foil, which is both rather original and makes you look all shiny like some heavenly Sun God. Or something. On a less stupid note, you should really check out their full range on their funky website which has some real gems on it.
