Keiichi Tanaami at Paul Smith

Keiichi Tanaami, a Japanese artist and toy designer has released these typically crazy Japanese prints and vinyl toys through Paul Smith’s website and London stores. Prices start at a very reasonable £10 for a surreal and slightly scary vinyl "Wonder Girl" ornament, all the way up to £950 for a limited edition, framed print, inspired by Japanese family crests.

I love contemporary Japanese art, but unfortunately I don’t have £950 burning a hole in my pocket. I just hope they use some of the designs from both the prints and the toys for tee shirts, as I’m getting a little bored of the whimsical Americana prints and slogans or Banksy style images that seemingly adorn every single men’s t-shirt today… I just want sumfin a little different, ya know?

Fake iphone

It seems that unscrupulous counterfeiters – are there any other kind – are already exploiting the good natured greed of technophiles everywhere by producing fake iphones or, as this video shows, the "tphone". There are even reports of these ersatz devices appearing on eBay. I can’t blame them for trying though, as we all know that the iphone is going to define mobile technology in the same way that the Apple ipod changed the face of mp3 players. In any scenario, there’s money to be made off of the back of what will be a world wide craze.

Katharine Hamnett at Tesco

"Let’s all go to Tesco, where your mum buys your best clothes, a-la la la, a-la la la la."

If you were one of those kids who had fleas and smelled of stale biscuits, you most probably remember the above line, sung in shrill unison by all your class mates, with all too agonising clarity. And it was  probably true, you smelly fleabag.

But no longer shall you be haunted by your past, because Tesco has bought in some top designers to makeover their clothing range. One such designer is Katharine Hamnett who has extended her "Choose Love" organic clothing line into the store. It’s fairly simple stuff, like this polo shirt. But at £10 a pop for an organically produced tee from Katharine Hamnett, I’m not going to complain. I’m still not going to tell anyone it’s from Tesco though…

Jellio art

Ever wanted a giant version of an unmade Airfix model bolted to your wall? Of course you did. Now you have the chance. Jellio is the ultimate in retro-kitsch-art, selling anything from glass encased Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots ($800) to Rubix Cube coffee tables ($600).

They also sell this Airfix style wall decoration ($2,500). Unfortunately it’s not actually a F-15 or a Harrier jump jet, instead being a drive-in movie theatre-inspired slice of Americana. I still think it’s rather cool and a bit different to having a print of some sunflowers above the mantel piece. Yes, all this stuff is grossly overpriced, but when I’m a multi-millionaire rock-god with his very own guitar shaped swimming pool, I’ll have the money to buy whatever I want. And buy these I will.

Vilebrequin or just vile?

created boxer-short style beach wear back in 1970, giving rise to pretty much what every guy wears down on the promenade today. Prior to Monsieur Vilebrequin’s vision, inspired by a tablecloth no-less, men wore short shorts. Very short shorts. Or Speedos.  Neither were a good look.

Since then, Vilebrequin has continued to churn out the long shorts with various gaudy prints such as bright pink banana’s and orange shrimps with yellow hibiscus flowers. That’s actually one, single design on one, single pair of shorts. The retail value on a pair of Vilebrequins is anywhere between £65 and £125, although there are vintage pairs that fetch three times that. The point is, men keep buying them and I don’t know why.

Next cargo shorts

I generally loathe Next. Their collection is the epitome of the blandness that pervades men’s high street fashion these days and their casual wear is made to such general specifications that they end up fitting everyone and no-one. Seems a little strong, doesn’t it?

Well, there are some things that Next do well. Like cheap but decent formal shirts, work trousers and black tees. And these shorts (£25). They’re simple, three quarter length shorts, but on the strength of a similar pair I purchased a few years ago, I bought these too. They’re a basic and essential item for Summer and that’s what Next seem to do best.

Maharishi sale

Look fashionable on the battlefield without giving away your position to the enemy or hurting your wallet – Maharishi is having a sale, with up to 50% off of their catalogue. I’ve picked out a couple of choice items that I really like, but the sale is pretty extensive – there seems to be an (army) surplus of it. Lame joke. Great sale.

This Suns Biker jacket (£125 shown) is a bargain, reduced from £250. It’s getting warmer, I know, but really, how long does a British Summer last? All of five minutes? Plus this will still look great next Autumn.

I was going to feature and purchase this sweet t-shirt but, alas, it’s sold out, which goes to show that you should really be heading over there yourself and snapping up whatever you can. Also, check out the denim department which doesn’t form part of the main sale but nevertheless has some excellent half-price items like these awesome Japanese inspired jeans, reduced to £60.

Rapha Racing / Paul Smith collaboration

Rapha, the respected "road racing" (that’s cycling in normal terms) clothes maker and Paul Smith (who needs no introduction) have teamed up to produce a small, but perfectly formed, range of cycling apparel.

The first release from this range is this rather smart racing jersey (£175) which commemorates Le Grand Départ of the Tour de France. It’s made from 100% Sportwool which is wool, but apparently it stops you from smelling when you sweat!

The end of June will see Rapha-Paul Smith racing caps becoming available, although details and prices have yet to be divulged.

Umbro by Kim Jones Hoodie

Since debuting at the Paris Men’s Fashion Week in 2004, designer and photographer Kim Jones has collaborated with and produced clothing ranges with designers such as Marios Schwab, Mulberry and Isetan.

One of the more recent collaborations has been with sportswear retailer Umbro. Jones’s collaboration has seen a sports range that’s rather more refined than your average McKenzie tat and is a lot more unique than ubiquitous Nike gear.

Out of the range I’ve chosen this "shadow-blue" hoodie (£65). I love the design, but it was the detachable arms that did it for me! Wear down on the track, but it may be a bit too good for just getting sweaty in!

Bonér clothing

Okay, let me stop you now. Yes, the company is called Bonér, and yes, it does have allusions to what I wake up with every morning (and I’m not talking morning breath). But, according to the website, it means a lot more than that. Either way, Bonér is a great new clothing company originally conceived in Rome.

They have ranges for both boys and girls but, for obvious reasons, I can only pass judgment on the guy stuff (hint: I’m a boy). I absolutely love their prints, especially the Reaper Tee ($30/£15) shown above. Apart from their ethos, the other thing I like about Bonér is that all their clothes come in limited runs. The Reaper itself comes in a range of only 30 tees. See, originality and style doesn’t have to cost the earth!

HOM underwear

Men can be divided into roughly three groups. Boxers, briefs and jockeys. No, they’re not allusions towards different professions, but the type of underwear we sport ‘neath our trousers. You do have your "fringe" groups though – the type that wear giant, holey y-fronts or tiny cartoon character pants, but we won’t discuss them now…

Personally, I’m a boxers man – they’re comfy and loose, letting me swing free n’ lo. But recently I’ve been thinking. If, by some chance, I get lucky with the opposite sex in the future, will she appreciate my gingham-style cheapo boxers from Next? Hmmm… possibly not. So I could do a lot worse than procure my self a pair of HOM briefs or jockeys. They’re actually a good looking range of pants (I can’t believe I just wrote that) more so than Calvin Klein’s. Personally my favourites are the Vintage Sports (£16.99) available in black and white. I bet they don’t make your abs look like they do in that picture…

The Future of Men’s Fashion?

As reported in our sister blog, Graduate Fashion Week has come to a close and, like last year, it was male fashion that really made a lasting impression. However, unlike last year, there were TWO winners taking a joint first prize in the River Island Gold Award – The jubilant designers being Nicholas Thomas and Jasper Chadprajong, each taking home £10,000 and the chance to take the world of men’s fashion by storm.

But what does that mean for us in terms of what we’ll be wearing next season?

Paul Smith exhibits Berkoff

This June, Paul Smith is delighted to be hosting an exhibition of the work of Hollywood actor Steven Berkoff.

Best known for his productions of ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Macbeth’ and for villainous roles in films such as ‘Octopussy’ and ‘War & Remembrance’, Berkoff adds another string to his bow with a show of photographic prints at Paul Smith.

Titled ‘Berkoff’s East End’ the show comprises a series of never before seen photographs that document London’s East End in 60s & 70s.

Born and brought up in London, Berkoff took photographs in and around Brick Lane. His subject matter was simple – real people, local characters leading London lives. Pictures depict the butcher’s wife, the flower seller and their beautiful, often tattered shops and slightly shabby streets capturing the quirks and transitional moments of London and Londoners.

‘Berkoff’s East End’ is an exhibition that recalls a time in London with images that are both serene and disturbing. Paul Smith is pleased to announce the first selling exhibition of Berkoff’s work at Paul Smith’s Mayfair shop: 9, Albemarle Street, London, W1.

For all you t-shirt lovers out there, Threadless is one of the best places to go and get unique t-shirts from. You can find cool designs, funny images and great slogans, like this haiku t-shirt which is so meta it hurts. Bearing the inscription: Haikus are easy, but sometimes they don’t make sense. Refrigerator.
On top of having brilliant t-shirts they also have regular clear out sales where you can pick up a t-shirt for bargainous prices. If you’re a budding designer or creative type you might want to submit one of your own designs to the site so you can see it come to life and be purchased by people all across the globe

Paul Smith brogues

Mmm I love brogues,  I own five pairs of brogue or brogue-inspired shoes, they’re the business. Church’s, Loake and John Lobb all make fabulous traditional brogues but if you’re going down the designer route Paul Smith is your man. These shoes have been aged using a dip dye method, but if you want to achieve the same effect on a pair of standard brogues simply polish with a shoe cream or polish a shade darker than the shoe. These hand crafted brogues will set you back £229.99, but with the love of a good cobbler they need never wear out.
