Jack Wills ‘Classic British Tailoring’ Collection

By Will Reid on November 26th, 2008

Jack Wills is a label synonymous with public school brats and pink polo-shirts with faux-Rugby Club logos. However, beneath what appears to be a rather empty and shallow brand image, every now and then Jack Wills releases a couple of items that can be put together to form fashion-friendly looks. I, myself, have a skinny scarf that is a perfect blend of stripey knit and dove grey silk- it never fails to improve an otherwise boring look.

In time for the Christmas period, the high-street chain has released their ‘Classic British Tailoring’ collection featuring gems such as the Lewington Tails and Oakington jacket.

Brandish Inspiration: Topman Latest Trend- Block Heads

By Will Reid on November 20th, 2008

For AW08-09, Topman has created a video showcase of their latest collection- Block Heads. Model James Mclean poses in what Topman tells is a trend “inspired by the look of a Dickensian gypsy mixed with influences from the deep south.” We get a glimpse of what we will no doubt be wearing by Christmas and the video really projects what the look is all about- a poetic Grunge with not a slight hint of Luke Worrall.

“Bib front t-shirts are worn under a waistcoat and double breasted cardigans, topped off with a black padded donkey jacket for a military feel. Big accessories for this trend include a selection of trilby hats and scarves worn with tweed trainers or brogues.” Winter’s never looked so good!

Menswear by Mouret- Yes Please!

By Will Reid on November 20th, 2008

47b53d26-95a3-468c-8ebe-a2eb2b38dafb.jpgFashionista editor Natalie Hormilla has let it slip that Roland Mouret is set to make a menswear collection. It is rumoured to launch during the next men’s Fashion Week (A/W 2009) and Natalie rightfully points out that Roland is not the first high-end designer to have launched a menswear line in recent times. The news comes only one month after Nicolas Ghesquière of Balenciaga showed men’s fashion in his catwalk collection.

Look out for more updates soon!

Dr Martens x Yohji Yamamoto Y’s

By Jonathan Smith on November 19th, 2008

yohji-yamamoto-y-dr-martens-fall-winter-2008-1.jpg

As you may be aware the original Air Sole is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Dr Martens are back in fashion with a design that has changed little in over 60 years, though Yohji Yamamoto and his team of design wizards has tweaked the design classic with a special Y’s collection Calf High Biker Boot and 10 Eye Boot. Available in both black and blue- check out these icons of utilitarian style out after the jump.

Yay or Nay?- American Apparel Unisex Winter Ski Hood

By Will Reid on November 13th, 2008

aa.jpgAmerican Apparel is a brand that I can’t help but be suspicious of. Yes, the adverts are provocative. Yes, Dov Charney supposedly walks around his office naked. Yes, their shop assistants look like they’ve just walked out of a NYLON spread. My problem is that whenever I see someone wearing American Apparel, it tends to be the case that it is the not the clothes that are great but how they are styled.

I can’t imagine this ‘Winter Ski Hood’ (£10) looking good on anyone who isn’t a model but I am wary of giving it a firm ‘Nay’ as I just know that as soon as this post is published, some edgy fashion editor will decree it the It-item of the season.

What do you think? Vote in our poll!

L’Uomo Vogue: AFRICA ISSUE – November 2008

By Will Reid on November 11th, 2008

66245_L3uomo_Vogue_122_575lo.jpgAfter taking on the lack of model diversity, Franca Sozzani (the editor extraordinaire behind the Black Issue of Italian Vogue) now wants us to sit up and pay attention to a different cause- the immense need for aid in Africa.

As part of her campaign for fashion to stand up and act, Sozzani has made the latest issue of L’Uomo Vogue the ‘AFRICA ISSUE.’ This means that every feature or person included in the issue has some sort of relation to the need of Africa. It features Nelson Mandela, Naomi Campbell, Forest Whitaker and Bernard Henri-Levy (the philosopher and co-editor of the special issue.)

New York Magazine tells us that Sozzani “not want to make an aesthetic statement about Africa…unlike a recent issue of India’s Vogue magazine…this one won’t show peasants posing with $5,000 handbags.”

See after the jump for pictures of contributors including Nelson Mandela and Michelle Obama and e-mail isabelle@shinymedia.com to tell us what you think of the issue.

Marc Jacobs Menswear for 5 More Years (which is 5 more Christmases!)

By Will Reid on November 11th, 2008

00030m.jpgDNR reports today that Marc Jacobs International has signed a contract with Staff International (a part of Diesel founder Renzo Rosso’s fashion empire) that will see Marc by Marc Jacobs Menswear expand over the next five years. Already in Rosso’s couture stable are Dsquared2, Viktor & Rolf, Maison Martin Margiela and Vivienne Westwood.

The contract means that Staff International will have exclusive rights to the production and distribution of the Marc Jacobs menswear line but, with Rosso’s history of major successes, I think this can only be a good move for both parties.

Gareth Pugh for Topman

By Jonathan Smith on November 10th, 2008

gareth-pugh-topshop-christmas-tree-2-340x540.jpg

Well it’s technically Topshop I suppose, and it’s not clothes either so this post is kinda losing its relevance however I shall persevere. For Topshop this (festive) season Gareth Pugh has created a Christmas tree out of those most nontraditional of materials: neon light bulbs. Gareth has used 60 neon bulbs to create this rather lack luster tree that has no tinsel, shiny glass ornaments or even a fairy straddling the peak, minimal just isn’t Christmas. But check it out for yourself, the tree will be available to view at Topshop/Topman’s flag ship store at Oxford Circus.

Alyasha x Adidas Originals preview here already!

By Jonathan Smith on October 31st, 2008

alyasha_03b.jpg

As promised here is the first full preview of the Alyasha x Adidas Originals collab – and arriving a little earlier than I predicted, aren’t we lucky lucky people! Coming via Caliroots (the selected carrier for Sweden) the line looks really strong, drawing influence from 1950′s Americana with a leather and a baseball jacket as key pieces.

The line will be split into two releases, one in February and then another in May. Prices will be set from mid to high, with all pieces in the collection having limited production numbers and limited availability. Upon release the line will be available, of course, from Caliroots, so keep your eyes peeled.

b Store lace up Chelsea boots from Farfetch

By admin on October 30th, 2008

b store mario boots farfetch.jpg

Combining a lace up with a Chelsea boot doesn’t sound like the smartest move but this B Store shoe is marvellously executed.

In a fetching tan colour the ‘Mario’ boot teams the smart good looks of a lace up with the rugged durability of a boot and will keep you looking stylish all winter. It’s also available in black and at £199 isn’t cheap but a well-made leather boot like this is a great investment.

Adidas Originals x Alyasha x Kazuki- no leopard print!

By Jonathan Smith on October 29th, 2008

alayasha.jpg

A few weeks ago we gave you previews of the Jeremy Scott x Adidas Originals collab and I for one didn’t much like it. This week highsnobiety has got their hands on a tiny preview of Adidas Originals’ colabs with Alyasha (from Fiberops) and Kazuki (from Fragment Design). Though this preview is limited to one pic of each, the pieces look good and far better than the Jeremy Scott collaboration- i.e. no leopard print in sight.

With any luck Adidas Originals is back on track with these two partnerships, full previews coming in a few weeks time.

Jump through for more images and check out the highsnobiety site for quotes from both designers on their lines with Adidas.

H&M x Comme des Garçons website goes live

By Jonathan Smith on October 28th, 2008

H&M.jpg

The H&M Comme des Garçons collab website has gone live and it has prices and everything! Speaking of the prices it all seems to be reasonable and has certainly piqued my curiosity enough to put a mark in my diary for the worldwide release which is of course 13th of November.

The collection does genuinely look really nice and far better than the usual H&M attempts. I usually don’t buy into the business of convenient collaborations between high fashion and high street but this one has really grabbed me by the balls so I can only recommend that you get yourself down to one of the select H&M stores on the release date.

Brandish Does Boulevard: The Second Bout of Street Style!

By Will Reid on October 27th, 2008

This gallery showcases some of the hottest street style looks I’ve seen in quite a while. Granted, some of the photography is a bit shifty (and the background of sun-washed Camden during the summer is enough to provoke resentment from most Brits,) but these looks are on-trend and rival a lot of professionally styled magazine editorials.

Brandish loves street style and there will definitely be more to come in the next few months. Just prepare for rain drops on the camera lens.

Carola Euler speaks to Style Salvage

By admin on October 22nd, 2008

carola euler autumn winter.jpg

Carola Euler is fast becoming one of the most talked-about names in menswear, having quickly made her mark on such fashion hotspots as b Store and Asos. We’ve featured some of the streetwear pieces she designed for the latter’s ‘Untitled’ collection, but what makes this still-shadowy designer tick?

Style Salvage ran an interview with the German-born designer, revealing such insights as her somewhat un-PC passion for mass-produced, disposable fashion, her aversion to ribbed tops and her love of jerseys. See after the jump for a few snippets from the interview.

Band of Outsiders Holiday Collection

By admin on October 21st, 2008

Band of Outsiders designer Scott Sternberg asked photographer Paul Jasmin to pose for their Holiday Collection in his LA home, it’s a shoot full of character and really gets the message of the clothes across.
The pieces are traditional menswear worn with a casual feel, think mustard velvet waistcoats, gently rumpled shirts and bow ties.
