Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh vs American Idol’s Adam Lambert

By admin on May 7th, 2009

Image: Wenn.com

One is a composer for films, and has been in a cult band for nearly forty years, the other is a finalist in American Idol.

Obviously the odds are already stacked in Mark Mothersbaugh‘s favour, his yellow boilersuit (très chic), hapahzard Chris Martin-style gaffer tape and lumbar support/belt have a certain charm. Having said that without the Devo energy dome he’s not a clear winner in the competition for best stage costume. Adam Lambert‘s stick on nipple decorations take care of that; not to mention the hologram leggings, embellished cummerbund and neatly-trimmed chest hair.

Can You See it…Which Popstar Has Been Taking Style Cues from Calvin Harris?

By Will Reid on May 6th, 2009

calvinharris.jpg

Calvin Harris, the Dumfries-born DJ who is often tipped with providing the backing track to the vintage wave of last summer, is currently topping the charts with his ‘I’m Not Alone’ and while watching his latest video I was suddenly aware of the BOT male’s striking similarity to another No. 1 popstar…

Latest Hairspiration: Crash Magazine’s ‘Pale Fountain’

By Will Reid on April 23rd, 2009

pf5.jpgIt looks as if, this summer, you will be mercilessly defined by your haircut. We’ve outlined a few of the trendiest, the possible need for back-up in a can, and now, I have a new look. This piece of major hairspiration comes in the form of the ‘Pale Fountain’ editorial in the latest issue of Crash magazine. I’m loving the almost bark-like quality of this model’s gorgeous copper locks and his overall effortless look means that he can play up his fashion with structural shapes, patterns and brash fabrics (check the velvet and plaid after the jump!) This follows on with the current trend for vampires, supernatural adolescents and dewy youths. So, next up should really be a post on how to find inner vampire. Oh, what a job!

See more from the editorial after the jump!

Festival countdown: time to go shopping

By Colin Chapman on April 23rd, 2009

Coachella_inspired.jpgIf like me, you’ve just about recovered from Coachella-envy, you’d better get your skates on if you want to nab the best items to wear at festivals here in the UK this year. Coachella for men was all about fey Englishness, with Henry Holland and Nick Grimshaw leading the way, (as reported by Isabelle) in cool pastels and Euro-jetset colours. Topman have just about sold out of their Grimshaw-esque coral pink tailored shorts (I’m posting this entry whilst jogging to the store, elbows ready), though the green make a suitable alternative. And for a touch of Agyness Deyn’s faded-stars-and-stripes glory, try this super T-shirt by Der Sammler at OkiNi.

Tavi the Super-Stylish Style Rookie Takes Inspiration From An Unexpected Male Figure…

By Will Reid on April 22nd, 2009

Untitled+2.jpgTavi, the famously fab 12 year-old blogger, is often cited as one of the most fashion-forward figures of the current style circuit. Fashion folk worldwide tune into her Style Rookie blog each day to get a glimpse of her latest get-ups and commentaries. When I saw this photo of her wearing her classic Slow and Steady Wins the Race sunglasses, I was reminded of one of my favourite males and his similar sunnies.

See after the jump to find out who I’m on about!

Let The Right One In: Teenage vampires inspire ‘vintage’ looks

By Colin Chapman on April 16th, 2009

Let_the_right_one_in.jpgWhilst a pre-pubescent teen may not be the obvious inspiration for a menswear blog, the styling details in Swedish art-house vampire stunner Let the Right One In are so, well, stunning that they couldn’t go unmentioned. Lead character Oskar, works the tucked in boots look so well it makes a grown man feel inadequate. Such insouciance! The padded jackets, tone-matched sweater and scarf combos, not to mention the awesome blonde, feather cut-hair are enough to make me want to venture into the smelly world of vintage clothing. Well, almost.

These boots by Margiela are what Oskar would wear. At over £400 they’re definitely beyond his pocket-money but I reckon you could turn up something similar if you can face the vintage trawl. Match with plum cords and a sweater in this season’s blue for a Spring take on that 1970s Swedish vampire-fancier look.

PS. the film is highly recommended if you’re wondering what I’m on about. Let the Right One In is at cinemas now.

Dyshaun: Stylista’s only male contender ..

By Colin Chapman on April 1st, 2009

Dyshaun.jpg
If, like me, you’re glued to Fiver‘s Stylista, you’ll have spotted contestant Dyshaun. In the show where 10 contestants battle (literally) to win an editorial position at Elle‘s NY offices and a rent-paid apartment for a year, the male candidates haven’t set much of an example in the style stakes, except for Dyshaun. He’s a trend follower rather than a setter, but is always impeccably groomed and has a great eye for colour. Highlights include his slouchy beanie, worn just so, those great glasses and a rather lovely Louis Vuitton scarf and American Apparel T combination in the royalest of blues. He also works the shirt, tie and jeans look with great panache.

Not that he’s had much competition, early loser Arnaldo had very promising hair but not much else. Panic-attackee Jason didn’t even have the benefit of great hair. Whilst William, the the only British-born contestant, started off as a Clockwork Orange punk but pouted himself out of the game without much elegance.

So, Dyshaun definitely the winner in the male Stylista stakes and worth taking note of for his grooming and accessorising skills. But what a bitch!

GQ Style: the Brit publication goes All-American

By Colin Chapman on March 27th, 2009

090318-gq-style-issue-eight.aspx7741art_img1155.jpg
Issue 8 of GQ Style magazine is now on the stands. And from the Warhol-esque cover onwards it’s an All-American edition. Inside, Terry Richardson photographs (himself naturally) but also shiny, happy President Obama. We get to read about why New York is so buzzing right now when it comes to menswear – a view I’d really endorse.

There are also some serious analyses of American fashion classics from the button-down to the white T-shirt to the chino pant. To illustrate the chino piece, they use a cracking image of James Dean in East of Eden – an iconic image that seems obvious until you look at the details and see how prescient they were – the loose chino pant, pale sweater and white plimsolls look so very contemporary. Not to mention the hair – quite timely with height and volume becoming desirable again. So if you’re working on your quiff or want to swot up on the origins of your wardrobe basics go straight to the source via GQ Style’s America Now issue.

A Comic Love The Look: Dom Joly is MC Hammer on ‘Let’s Dance for Comic Relief ’09′

By Will Reid on March 11th, 2009

lovethelook.jpgThis year’s Red Nose Day campaign is in full-swing and everyone from Fearne Cotton to Fern Britten is doing something funny for money. Dom Joly, the comic-genius and all-round bon viveur behind Trigger Happy TV, has joined the show Comic Relief show ‘Let’s Dance’ and last Saturday we saw him imitate the style and dance of the infamous MC Hammer.

To achieve the Hammer-style, Joly donned a pair of rather hideous Harem pants in the ever-popular gold lamé. Add chains, hi-tops and logo-print headbands and you have yourself a RND look. Remember, everyone loves the funny man!

Why not do something for Comic Relief yourself?

Arena Magazine Closes Down

By Will Reid on March 5th, 2009

ArenaCoverDec460.jpgThe sad news yesterday was that Arena magazine has been closed down by publisher Bauer Media. The magazine has been running for 22 years and it has always been BOT (Bang On Trend) despite rapidly falling circulation figures in recent years.

The April issue of the magazine is due out next week and rumours are flying that this issue will be the last. Thankfully for our fashion flames, the magazine’s diffusion mag, (if you could call it that,) Arena Homme Plus, will continue on.

Check back to Brandish for a full review of the possible final issue next week!

Brandish Alumni Jason Dike Writes for Selectism- Column Madness!

By Will Reid on March 5th, 2009

jason.jpgFlicking over my most frequented pages recently, I came across Jason Dike’s column at Selectism. Jason was on the Brandish team when I first started out over a year ago but sadly he left last September, leaving us all awfully down-in-the-dumps.

However, Jason is now writing a brilliant column for the equally brilliant Selectism and we can’t wait to see more of his stuff!

Which High-Profile Model Inspired Brandon Flowers’ Brits Brilliance?

By Will Reid on February 26th, 2009

wenn5250728.jpgWhen Brandon Flowers stepped onto the stage at this years Brits 2009 in that jacket I died as I felt my own wardrobe implode with sheer joy. His jacket had major shoulder pads covered in long feathers and the overall look was a mixture of indie legend and an American footballer who had been given a makeover by Jean Paul Gaultier.

I was pleasantly surprised at how many people shared in my amazement and when I set my Facebook status to something Brandon-related immediately I had replies from fashion, music and technology writers all claiming to be either in love/ mad with envy or seeing double. I, myself, felt that I recognised the jacket and it wasn’t until the next day that I realised the model Brandon had obviously been taking style tips from…

Oh My Gran Torino…What was Clint Eastwood thinking?

By Will Reid on February 25th, 2009

gran_torino_photocall_001_wenn5253842.jpgI feel like a traitor to men worldwide (and that’s saying something seeing as my trouser of choice is the skinny jean and I am constantly borrowing things from friends and family without a second thought as to which sex the item was originally intended for.) I have just dissed Clint Eastwood on a pretty public scale and I can already hear the heckles and smalls rocks as they soar through the air.

But let’s be honest- he looks a complete mess. I am all for ageing gracefully and not heading in the direction of mutton dressed as lamb but this is just pure laziness. I don’t care if his luggage went missing or he was attacked on the way to the ceremony; there is simply no excuse.

How to update? I would suggest a simple white shirt to replace the sick-green polo and a pair of classic blue jeans instead of those hideous high-waisted slacks. Replace the trainers with brown boat shoes and you have a great laid-back cool for any age!

The latest issue of VMAN was released a few days ago and it has two, bright covers. Models Jake Madden and CJ Hancock pose in fab suits from designers Calvin Klein and Givenchy and the covers are brilliantly fresh- perfect for the economic moan-athon we are currently suffering!

CJ and Jake are the joint winners of the VMAN and Ford Model Search and from these debut covers it looks like they will go far.

OkiNi takes a new direction (and the trusty band T-shirt with it)

By Colin Chapman on February 20th, 2009

AMountainTee.jpg
OkiNi have just announced they will shortly be branching out to offer a music section on the site, better known for its well-priced designerwear. But this isn’t quite the off-fashion post it may seem, as the first release by the new music arm will be the A Mountain of One album release which comes complete with T-shirt.

And we’re not talking just any old T-shirt but a ‘vintage styled stretched neck T-shirt’ – only going to prove that changes are afoot in T-shirt land (as we’ve posted about recently). So it’s probably time to throw out those figure-hugging or (heaven forbid) ribbed Ts lurking in your wardrobe and embrace a looser, less defined shape with the neckline being (it seems) where the action is.
