Political Fashion Cont. – Josh Brolin in Interview November 2008

By Will Reid on October 15th, 2008

A political campaign seems to be the ‘It’ accessory of this season. After Tyra Banks posing as Michelle Obama in September’s Harper’s Bazaar, Interview has pulled in Josh Brolin to rock the presidential trend for their latest cover. Josh is actually playing President George Bush in an up-coming film, titled ‘Bush,’ directed by Oliver Stone. However, on the cover he is photographed by Mikael Jansson.

Do you think that the fashion industry is taking the politics trend too far or do you think it’s a necessary evil at a time like this. Tell us on our Facebook page!

The Obama Outfit Continues- Benji Madden

By Will Reid on October 13th, 2008

I want Barack Obama to become the President of the USA. I do. Honestly.

However, telling you guys is enough for me and I don’t feel the need to have his name plastered across each of my outfits. Benji Madden turned up to a Diesel’s 30th Birthday in New York having heavily invested in the trend for Obama-slogan clothes and his political tuppence worth came in the form of a print tee.

P.Diddy in October issue of L’Uomo Vogue- Opinions?

P. Diddy has graced the cover of L’Uomo Vogue‘s latest issue and I’m not sure what to think. Not someone who I associate with great style or fashion prowess (despite the cologne and menswear line,) Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs looks a bit naff in my opinion.

But hey, at least he’s lost the suNglasses for once! Tell us what you think by e-mailing isabelle@shinymedia.com

Another Man A/W 2008- Viggo Mortensen, John Galliano, Steve McQueen, Lucien Freud and Christopher Bailey!

By Will Reid on October 9th, 2008

AnotherManFall-Winter20082009ViggoM-1.jpgThe latest issue of Another Man reads like a Who’s Who of not only the fashion industry but the world of art, music and acting. Jam-packed with features on Lucien Freud, a list of ‘Style Icon’ profiles scribed by the artistic elite and tribute stories to John Galliano (a designer who haunts my dreams,) and Martin Margiela (a designer who borders on haunting my nightmares.)

Dazed Digital tells us that the issue provides an “insight into the world of fashion with work from the world’s leading photographers and stylists including Nicola Formichetti, Norbert Schoerner, Alister Mackie, Gareth McConnell, David Armstrong, Tyler Udall, Serge Leblon, Bryan McMahon, Sandra Freij, Paul Wetherell, Mattias Karlsson, Lina Scheynius.”

David Walliams- Ladies Man, Transvestite, Children’s Book Author?

By Will Reid on October 8th, 2008

walliams.jpgDavid Walliams, the man who shot to stardom with the launch of Little Britain, has accomplished many things. He’s won a ton of awards, just launched state-side, swam across the English Channel and even been spotted with the likes of Natalie Imbruglia and Kate Moss on his arm. Now, the comedian had decided to write a book for children, ‘The Boy In The Dress,’ about a boy who likes to dress in female clothing and his journey to see the approval of his peers. Illustrated by Quentin Blake, I’m sure it will sell simply on shock factor but it would struggle to be as shocking as this editorial from Parade magazine.

In the editorial, Walliams struts his (hairy) stuff in designer couture in an effort to publicise his latest career move. Oh, dear.

See after the jump for all the photos- and it only gets worse!

Rafael Nadal the Face Of Lanvin’s New Men’s Fragrance!

By Will Reid on October 3rd, 2008

rex_796866h.jpgFashionista, the site that is always in-the-know, has reported upon a WWD article that reveals tennis-supremo Rafael Nadal as the chosen face of French fashion-house Lanvin’s new fragrance for men, L’Homme Sport.

Nadal is the first tennis face to front the campaign of a French fashion house and the news of his appointment is causing quite the stir. Nadal recently became the Number 1 Tennis Player in the World, taking over from Roger Federer who is, himself, a bit of a fashion darling beloved by editors and designers from Anna Wintour to Oscar De La Renta.

Andre 3000- I’d Vote Just For One Of Your Bow-Ties…

By Will Reid on October 2nd, 2008

Andre Benjamin (also known as Andre 3000) is taking part in the latest ‘Declare Yourself’ campaign which urges American youths to cast their vote as to who should be the next President of their country. Christina Aguilera and Jessica Alba also star in the campaign but it’s Andre’s image that has caught my attention.

Gagged with one of his own bow-ties, the campaign tells that “only you can silence yourself.”

Iggy- That’s Not What We Meant By The New ‘It’ Shoe!

By Will Reid on October 2nd, 2008

iggy.jpg

Iggy Pop has, in previous seasons, been declared by designers as high-fashion inspiration. And for many valid reasons; he rocked skinny leather trousers long before Kate Moss, meddled with blood long before Angelina Jolie and played the effeminate rocker with crazy hair long before Russell Brand.

But when Brandish’s own Isabelle reported on the menswear trend of ‘Medges,’ (men’s footwear with a Wedge heel,) no-one was expecting the trend to filter down to Crocs.

As good old Oscar Wilde once mused, “fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.” Well, there’s no time like the present!

Brandish Poll: Would You Wear Unisex Clothing?

By Will Reid on September 23rd, 2008

aaoxford.jpg

American Apparel, the brand synonymous with androgyny and men in skintight jeans, has just launched their Unisex Oxford Shirt. I have three sisters and I’m no stranger to borrowing the odd jumper (actually, that would be reclaiming,) and I have in past borrowed Ralph Lauren shirts and vintage blazers for a better fit and a slimmer silhouette. Russell Brand, a man who walks on to a talk-show in a jersey tunic dress and girl’s jeans from Topshop but still manages to be a sex god, would be a great example of unisex dressing at its best but what do you think? Is it worth the sartorial risk when you might see a girl in the same tee as you?

Would you go Unisex- vote in our poll after the jump!

James Franco Does Agyness Deyn in Interview October 2008

By Will Reid on September 22nd, 2008

fashion.jpg

Franco’s cover (left) bears a striking resemblance to Agy Deyn’s Pop editorial of S/S 2007

Oops- I genuinely only just realised that the title of this post could be interpreted pretty freely. Anyway, let’s all just grow up and listen to the explanation.

Basically, after a sell-out premiere issue featuring Kate Moss in a cat-suit, Interview magazine has decided to use James Franco on the cover of their October issue. Photographed by Mikael Jansson, this is a huge step for Franco and after his role as the latest Gucci-guy, he has cemented himself as a fixture on the high-fashion scene. This cover however, reminds me of Agyness Deyn’s editorial in the Spring/Summer 2007 issue of Pop Magazine.

Read on for more pictures and a full editorial review with highlights including Raf Simons, Karl Templer and Ryan McGinley.

Barack Obama and Terry Richardson- Better Than Stefano Pilati in Interview?

By Will Reid on September 17th, 2008

terry-richardson-obama-photo.jpgWhen I saw this image on Hypebeast this morning, I instantly wanted to put it on Brandish and have it sent right round the world on some type of banner. Unfortunately, I found out 5 minutes later that the hotel I’m staying at (Grand Hyatt Mumbai,) has given the entire floor above me to a call centre which means that it takes my computer about half an hour to Google something and the thought of uploading a picture onto Movable Type almost brings me to tears.

Anyway here it is: a picture sure to go down in fashion history.

WISHLIST: MR P T-Shirt by Tim Lahan

By Will Reid on September 17th, 2008

mrptshirt.jpgAs much as I hate label-whores and Louis Vuitton/Gucci-style designs that are made only for the monogram printed across them, I have to admit that my Sartorial ‘id,’ survives vicariously through Kanye West’s ‘Universecity’ blog.

Often, we catch (not very) subtle glimpses of candy-coloured designer goods but sometimes we’re treated to the odd indie-flash buy. Like this ‘Mr P’ t-shirt designed by Tim Lahan. It’s quirky, fun, lighthearted and a piece that you could wear with anything.

Not recommended for those with a fear of pigeons; if that includes you, then I apologise for exposing you to what must surely be like The Ring + The Grudge + The Shining (in pigeon-fearing terms.)

A Grunge Revival? Alan Cumming Seems To Think So!

By Will Reid on September 15th, 2008

rex_801664b.jpgRex Features describes the Creative Arts Primetime Emmys as an event to “recognise technical and other achievements for the 2007-08 TV season…widely considered to be a precursor to the main Emmys ceremony.”

In my world of tired soaps like Eastenders and Coronation St, this translates as an excuse for C-list stars to dress up in posh frocks a la the recent TV Soap Awards (or something along those lines) that occurred in Britain where everyone thought that Ashley Slanina-Davies from Hollyoaks was a style star because she actually had a YSL clutch (and, I admit it, she did look wonderfully 80s.)

Anyway, Alan Cumming decided to bring a different flavour to the LA-based awards and opted for grunge-hair and darker shades instead of the usual skinny-fit suit, Converse trainer and grey/black palette that we see from most of LA’s men.

Why So Serious DeNiro?- Oops, Wrong Film…

By Will Reid on September 11th, 2008

deniropacino2.jpgMy bad! I may have the wrong film but I doubt such a slip-up would result in a look that miserable from Robert DeNiro? Might it be that he’s fed up with films? Maybe he (okay, clearly he) couldn’t be bothered to make the effort to dress up but my bet is that it’s standing next to Al Pacino who, as well as being an arguably equal competitor on the greatest actor front, actually looks pretty good!

Read on for pictures including 50 Cent as well as info about this cult-to-be film.

WISHLIST: A Closet Session with à la Fake Karl

By Will Reid on September 10th, 2008

anna wintour and karl lagerfeld.jpg

Now this looks like my kind of party!

I feel like a horrible, disgusting sorry excuse for a fashion follower. Why am I bound by such emotional wounds? Why do I feel so sick-minded and wrong?

Answer: I want an invitation to Fake Karl’s closet. Yes, it’s true! I, Will Reid, couldn’t think of anything this week that could be desired more than a day of hanging upside down with Anna and Karl sipping our “respective drinks.”

And don’t even tell me you don’t want to too. There’s even a Yohji Yamamoto-shaped hole in the window!
