Gentlemans Relish – the return of the barber shop

By Laura on August 5th, 2011

Yesterday evening I headed to Gentlemans Relish in Clerkenwell for some head and face topiary.

My hair was long, misshapen, permanently unruly and I’d not shaved for a few days, so this assignment was perfectly timed.

A brief run down of the company – Paul Jackson opened the company’s first salon in Colchester in 2007 and has been steadily expanding the business every year since. The Clerkenwell salon is the company’s second in London (the other is off Brick Lane), and they have ambitious growth plans, aiming for a solid 45-50 across the UK in the future.

The salons sell products by some quality male grooming brands as well, including Kevin Murphy, American Crew and Lock Stock & Barrel.

The Clerkenwell outlet itself is classy as hell, the centrepieces being four perfectly restored 1950’s cream and red crocodile-leather chairs with heavy-duty foot rests. An intimate size and excellent online booking system means there’s no one impatiently thumbing dog-eared copies of GQ on the sofa either.

That said, a barbershop is only as good as the guy holding the scissors. Salon Manager and GR Managing Director Darren Agyei-Dua sat me down, and I ran through my normal style before deciding to just let him do what he liked.

He’s trained in pretty much everything there is to train in in terms of hair and grooming, and cut for numerous agencies including CLM, Caren and Jed Root. He even cut Robbie Williams’ hair at a Brit Awards Ceremony recently. Impressive stuff.

Darren was quick, precise and effortless with his cutting. He had consistently good chat as well, which really does make all the difference.

The shave was of matching quality. I had a Turkish shave in Istanbul last year and it was going swimmingly until they burnt my ears with a lighter. Darren assured me no ears would be burnt.

If you’ve never been shaved, have it done. It’s quite therapeutic. At Gentleman’s Relish you have your face washed, some ‘skin food’, a warm towel, badger brush applying the foam, straight razor taking it off and then a cool towel to close your pores. Your skin is left as smooth as the day you were born and feels fantastic.

It’s really not that expensive either – £25 for a cut and £15 for a shave, which is considerably more accessible than what Gentleman’s Relish’s previously charged.

The Clerkenwell salon is in a good location, boasts top-notch stylists and is hoping to add a masseuse to the mix by Christmas. They’re creating a new kind of barbershop for a new, style-conscious generation. I’m sold.

Esemplare Autumn/Winter 2011 Collection

By Laura on August 4th, 2011

The rain is back and although I hope this is not it for Summer, I can’t help but be a bit excited for cooler days, drinks in country pubs next to roaring fires…. and of course knitwear. Okay, Okay I am obsessed I know, but if we have to suffer through months of dark rainy weather, we should at least get to look good doing it.

So like any knitwear obsessive, I have been keeping a close eye on what to expect this winter. One of my favourites so far has to be from the Italian fashion house Esemplare. This is their second collection to hit the UK and consists of knitwear to outerwear.

Esemplare has built a name for themselves with high quality wardrobe staples, with innovative treatments combined with sartorial detailing. Alessandro Pungetti, Creative Director of Esemplare, spoke about the collection stating ”in life there is much more to do and discover, this collection was designed to give life to a menswear line which is essential but never to casual. We maximize the fundamental details to give each garment greater charm and personality”

This season expect ‘city slicker’ overcoats paired with heavy knits and hobo chic jackets. Knitwear made from deluxe Jacquard Norwegian wool in an array of Autumnal colours. All the outerwear is treated and garment dyed to create a worn vintage feel. The addition of detachable collars and hoods in the lightweight jackets, make these items transitional pieces from Winter to Spring.

What do you think of the collection?

The moving background sets the tone, as we see the different features of the jeans in action. These technical jeans are surprisingly affordable and a great purchase for an urban cyclist. Dockers Alpha Khakis present: The Blind Barber

By Laura on July 25th, 2011

Dockers have been doing a great job re-brand themselves recently, proving they are no longer just for your dad. The latest product to join their line-up is the Alpha Khaki. To celebrate the launch Dockers have partnered with the New York barbershop, The Blind Barber. Despite the fact they have only been open for a year, they have developed a cult following and are best known for their quality cuts in a subdued lifestyle environment – qualities mirrored by the Dockers.

The Alpha khaki combines aims to combine the sensibilities of denim including a slimmer fit, lower rise and beefier construction with the comfort of khakis. The Alpha features “reinforcement, topstitching and over-lock seaming details, along with some of the dressed-up touches of a more tailored trouser. Similar to a pair of jeans, the ‘Alpha’ is cut from heavier-weight khaki fabrics, specifically selected to wear, wrinkle and age in ways denim would soften and break in over time.”

Expect to see the Alpha in stores from August in 12 different colourways.

Final Uniqlo +J collection

By Laura on July 25th, 2011

Last month Uniqlo and Jil Sander’s announced that this upcoming fall/winter +J collection will be the last. The two parties have agreed to terminate their relationship which saw the line bring Sander’s classic minimalism to the mass market. As a result there is bound to be plenty of anticipation surrounding the concluding collection, and if the first look is anything to go by, there won’t be any disappointment.

The initial pictures show an interesting combination of traditional tailoring with sportswear. What do you think of the dark jacket paired with a nylon down vests and collared shirts?

Jimmy Choo for men launching on Mr. Porter

By Laura on July 5th, 2011

Last December Jimmy Choo announced they were set to launch the brand’s return to footwear. And now after months of waiting, they are finally ready to launch the collection in collaboration with Mr. Porter

Given the months of hype around this new collection, I do wonder if they can possibly live up to the hype. That said if the short film ‘Walking the Line’, they created for the Men’s AW 11 collection is anything to go by, I am going to say – YES!

On a side note I love that the film is set in New York’s High Line park, as I had the chance to visit last week (see picture below). For those not familiar, the High Line was originally constructed in the 1930s, to lift dangerous freight trains off Manhattan’s streets. Recently it has been converted into a beautiful mile-and-a-half-long elevated park, running through the West Side neighborhoods of the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Clinton/Hell’s Kitchen. If your in New York make sure to check it out.

Tricker’s Super Boot C Marron

By Laura on July 5th, 2011

In 1829 Joseph Tricker, master shoemaker, founded the company R.E. Tricker Ltd and five generations later his family continues to make beautiful shoes with the skills and service ethics of the past.

Perhaps better known for their classic brogues and oxfords, Tricker’s also produce fashionable, high-quality boots – perfect for fall weather. My favourite has to be the “Super Boot C Marron,” which comes in a clean, wingtip-free dark chestnut brown leather. Set atop a wooden stacked heel and completed with tonal leather laces and minimal stitching. These sleek lace-up boots would look perfect with a good pair of dark denim jeans. The classic British boot is available now for £325 at Present London.

Get Running – Top five running tips for beginners

By Laura on July 5th, 2011

As many of you know I recently entered to take part in a triathlon…this was a massive deal for me seeing as cycling to work was about as much exercise as I was willing to do.

It’s been a few weeks now and I can officially say exercising isn’t actually as bad as I thought it was. Don’t get me wrong, I am in no way a fitness fanatic now, but have found it is definitely a great way to blow off some steam after a long day in the office.

Seeing as it is only July, there is plenty of time for you to give it a shot… maybe even sign up for a race. So to help you get started in the right direction I wanted to share the running tips the lovely experts at Sports Shoes gave me.

The Kit. Your old tennis trainers just won’t do I’m afraid. The important part of the kit is your running shoes. Ideally you should go to a running specialist to get your gait assessed. The specialists will be able to tell you what shoes are best for you so you avoid injury. Wearing the right clothing will make you more comfortable and help keep you drier and cooler. Find items that aren’t too tight or too baggy and opt for synthetic fibres which help draw moisture aware from the skin.

The Run. If you haven’t run for a while then make sure you start slowly with a mile or so, you might also want to run / walk at intervals. Gradually build up your mileage adding no more than 10% per week. If you’re running in a gym make sure you ask for guidance from staff at the gym.

Keep Hydrated. Hydration is key to your performance as a runner. Making sure that you take lots of water before, during and after your run will stop fatigue, cramping and heatstroke.

Shield Yourself From The Sun. Sunburn can occur after just ten minutes in the sun, even in the UK! While it can be hard to avoid the rays, especially if you’re committed to training, there are things you can do to protect yourself from the ill effects of too much sun: cover up well within loose clothing, sunglasses and a hat. Sunscreen, with both UVA and UVB protection and a factor no lower than 15, should be applied 30 minutes before going out and then generously and regularly throughout the day.

Company. Find a friend to run or train with or join a club – it makes it much more fun and even harder to quit! Investigate the most scenic routes in your area and organise running with friends. Or, if you prefer alone time, treat yourself to some new music on your iPod and save it especially for your training sessions. Finding ways to combine running with your favourite activities will mean you look forward to it all the more!

Weight Target. “I will be a size 10!” or “I’m running the London Marathon” – have a goal. Aim to be a certain size or weight, and put reminders around the house, especially on the fridge door. Summer is a great time for that extra fitness or weight loss push, but you aren’t going to shed stones in just a few days or become a long distance runner overnight. If you’re serious about your goal, build a training programme and stick to it for a good few months! Remember that eating healthily and getting regular exercise is the best way to lose weight and keep in mind other factors when assessing how well you’re doing- has your general mood improved? Are you more lively?

Distance Target. If weight isn’t an issue for you why not sign up for a race, even if it’s just a 5km fun run. Again, having a clear goal is so important, but a deadline makes it that bit clearer and important.

Port 1961 SS 2012

By Laura on June 23rd, 2011

This past week at Milan fashion week, Ports 1961 showcased their incredible SS 2012 collection.

The second men’s collection from Ports 1961 was very polished and tailored, as one would expect, drawing on the spirit of Classicism. Taking inspiration from the clean forms and elongated silhouettes found in the master-works of Brancusi. The collection focused on a slim and fitted silhouette with elongated double-breasted blazers and sleeveless trench coats of modern and minimal sensibility. There were also a lot of transparent lightweight knits, cotton blends and silks in clinical white, beige, midnight blue and graphic prints.

Lyle & Scott A/W 2011 collection

By Laura on June 23rd, 2011

If you live in the UK, you will have no doubt be familiar with Lyle & Scott and their distinctive yellow eagle logo. Lyle & Scott have spent 130 years honing their unique take on British casual sportswear, using traditional materials such as cashmere. The brand that was once synonymous with golfers, has however managed to stay current and their latest collection is no different.

Earlier this week Lyle & Scott got in touch with Brandish to give us a sneak peak at the A/W collection. We love the preppy knits combined with a street-savvy urbanite style.

As the release says “The Knitwear is produced in Scotland using local wools complemented by handmade Shirting produced using the finest British Textiles. This edition of garments are produced in limited numbers, exclusively for the PRESENT store.”

The F.S.C Spring Ventile Parka

By Laura on June 19th, 2011

Unfortunately there is still no summer in sight for us here in the UK. So while some of you are probably enjoying the sun, we are contending with rain. In this weather it is always hard to figure out what to wear. Jackets are very much a necessity, but many are too bulky or warm.

That is why I love the “Spring Ventile Parka” from F.S.C. The jacket is completely water resistant yet doesn’t look like you are about to hike up a mountain. Perfect for city wear and sporadic weather conditions. The jacket features “6 external pockets” with “genuine corozo buttons,” and is all handmade in New York City.

You can pick up the jacket here for $482 or approx £297
