Port 1961 SS 2012

By Laura on June 23rd, 2011

This past week at Milan fashion week, Ports 1961 showcased their incredible SS 2012 collection.

The second men’s collection from Ports 1961 was very polished and tailored, as one would expect, drawing on the spirit of Classicism. Taking inspiration from the clean forms and elongated silhouettes found in the master-works of Brancusi. The collection focused on a slim and fitted silhouette with elongated double-breasted blazers and sleeveless trench coats of modern and minimal sensibility. There were also a lot of transparent lightweight knits, cotton blends and silks in clinical white, beige, midnight blue and graphic prints.

Lyle & Scott A/W 2011 collection

By Laura on June 23rd, 2011

If you live in the UK, you will have no doubt be familiar with Lyle & Scott and their distinctive yellow eagle logo. Lyle & Scott have spent 130 years honing their unique take on British casual sportswear, using traditional materials such as cashmere. The brand that was once synonymous with golfers, has however managed to stay current and their latest collection is no different.

Earlier this week Lyle & Scott got in touch with Brandish to give us a sneak peak at the A/W collection. We love the preppy knits combined with a street-savvy urbanite style.

By Laura on June 19th, 2011

A few months ago I stumbled into the amazing Present store in Shoreditch, and quickly fell in love with their collection.

That love was totally reignited when I saw their lookbook which highlights their current summer 2011 collection. As the release says “The Knitwear is produced in Scotland using local wools complemented by handmade Shirting produced using the finest British Textiles. This edition of garments are produced in limited numbers, exclusively for the PRESENT store.”

If your in Shoreditch pop in and check it out (their coffee is pretty amazing too) otherwise you can check out their collection here

The F.S.C Spring Ventile Parka

By Laura on June 19th, 2011

Unfortunately there is still no summer in sight for us here in the UK. So while some of you are probably enjoying the sun, we are contending with rain. In this weather it is always hard to figure out what to wear. Jackets are very much a necessity, but many are too bulky or warm.

That is why I love the “Spring Ventile Parka” from F.S.C. The jacket is completely water resistant yet doesn’t look like you are about to hike up a mountain. Perfect for city wear and sporadic weather conditions. The jacket features “6 external pockets” with “genuine corozo buttons,” and is all handmade in New York City.

You can pick up the jacket here for $482 or approx £297

It hardly feels as though we have had a summer, but Burberry have already unveiled their Autumn 2011 campaign looks.

Featuring a number of British actors, models and musicians, Chief Creative Officer Christopher Bailey, stated he was “inspired by iconic British portraits and our own archive campaigns from the late 1960s of Jean Shrimpton using her trench coat to shelter herself from the poetic and romantic British weather.”

What do you think?

7 tips for training for a triathlon

By Laura on June 6th, 2011

Triathlon season is here and as those of you who follow us on Twitter will know I have signed up to compete in my first one next month.

Seeing as I couldn’t remember the last time I went to the gym, I decided to ask Dr Ralph Rogers from the London Orthopaedic Clinic for some top triathlon training tips. Dr Rogers is a consultant in sports & musculoskeletal medicine, specialising in soft tissue injuries, human performance, wellness and weight management. If you are training for a triathlon, marathon or just want to start exercising more read on!

1. Know what you’re signing up for – See your GP for a full check-up before undertaking any new exercise regime.

2. Increase exercise gradually – Never increase the duration or intensity of your regular exercise session by more than 10 per cent each week.

3. Prepare your body accordingly – Stretching and incorporate weight training to help muscles build strength.

4. Check your equipment – Ensuring equipment such as bike seats and even running shoes to be in good condition and suitable for the level you are training at.

5. Don’t over-do it – over-exertion and constant repetition can cause injury.

6. Recognise symptoms – it is essential to learn to recognise symptoms of various injuries and allow sufficient time to rest.

7. Typical triathlete injuries include -

‘Swimmer’s shoulder’ – swimming, especially freestyle, causes the shoulder to undergo repetitive overhead motion which may compromise microvasculature in the rotator cuff. This repeated micro trauma can result in the development of an inflammatory response and ultimately pain. Symptoms usually are reported as pain at the shoulder during the late recovery phase and early catch phase of your stroke.

‘Runner’s Knee’ (Chondromalacia Patella) – to prevent this common injury avoid hill climbs in both cycling and running, try riding higher in the saddle, and use strength training. ‘

Achilles Tendonitis’ – causing pain in posterior calf and insertion point on the heel. Overuse injury with symptoms often coming after an increase in volume, intensity, too much hill training, or poor equipment set-up.

Skate For Cancer takes on France

By Laura on June 2nd, 2011

Skate for Cancer (S4C) was started by Rob Dyer after he lost a number of important people including his mother to Cancer. Anyone who has ever met Rob will tell you that he is a truly inspirational individual who turned something very tragic into a source of inspiration, dedicating himself to raising awareness of cancer amongst young people.

In 2004, S4C was formed as a project that would see him and his crew skate across North America, building awareness and raising money to fight cancer. Since then he has now skateboarded across North America, New Zealand and Australia. Next up he will be tacking France

S4C is about “inspiring youth and building a community of informed people who were hyped on getting involved and making healthy choices that prevented contracting the disease in the first place. Rob always understood the importance of medical research, but felt that his purpose was to focus more on the preventative lifestyle decisions that are often ignored by many charities. Instead of concentrating on collecting money for research, Rob preferred to inspire people…”

Rob is an amazing individual who proves on a daily basis just how much one can achieve with a little bit of passion. To follow his journey as he prepares to for his Skate across France you can check out his blog here.

Lanvin Neckties and Bowties for Autumn/Winter 2011

By Laura on May 23rd, 2011

Lanvin has giving the necktie an interesting spin in their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection combining silk and wool splits. As you can see above the long end of the necktie is finished in a wool. Similarly, the bowties have a wool application that personally I think sits well with the silk. What do you think? Would you wear these split neckties?

From the North with Love by Stussy

By Laura on May 17th, 2011

Here is another collection I wish was available in the UK. Stussy Canada has drawn upon the history of the West Coast and the First Nations culture there, to create a special capsule dubbed “From the North with Love.” The collection includes tees, sweats and special woven shirts which represent the perfect layering components for Canadian weather.
Unfortunately for us though the collection is only available through Stussy in Vancouver and Toronto.

Opening Ceremony x Warriors of Radness “Beach Crew!” collection

By Laura on May 17th, 2011

I love the fresh, day- faded pastels of Opening Ceremony x Warriors of Radness “Beach Crew!” Collection. However, that said I can’t help but feel these shorts will only work on super skinny model types. Unlike some, I have no issues with men wearing shorts… but it is all about the length, and well short shorts just aren’t a good look.

Check out the limited edition collection below, and available online here

Cape Madras long sleeve summer shirts

By Laura on May 17th, 2011

Cape Madras have just released their “perfect summer attire” longsleeve shirt. I know those are two words you don’t usually see together, however Madras insists it is made from “the best warm weather fabric ever created.”

The fabric apparently has a great history behind it and gets its name from the “English name of the city of Chennai, India with their ‘Madrasi checks’.” The Cape Madras’ shirt has a button-down collar and shirttail hem. It’s made of 100% cotton patch madras and is offered in two colors: Trundy and Richmond LS.
