Arsenal update: Ashley Williams talks begin, Stephan El Shaarawy interest

By Stefano on April 16th, 2013

Goal.com has just unveiled one of their exclusives and they claiming that Swansea’s central defender Ashley Williams, or at the very least his representatives, visited the London club for talks about his future.

Arsenal are reportedly very keen on the Swansea captain as they seek to bolster a defence that has pretty much undermined any chance they had this year of a Premiership title shot.

The site also suggests that Arsenal are keeping tabs on Marseille centre-back Nicolas N’Koulou, 23, who is apparently looking for a move from the French league this summer.

Of course Arsenal will face strong competition from Liverpool for Williams’ signature. The player has a connection with the Red manager Brendan Rodgers. However Arsenal may be able to offer Williams Champions league football, and at 29 the player may be sorely tempted.

Meanwhile there are murmurings, reported by Touchline Talk, that Arsenal, are also tracking Stephan El Shaarawy’s situation at AC Milan.

Apparently the player appears to be unhappy after two years at the San Siro, and could be on his way out in the summer.

Arsenal and Man City are possible destinations, as is Napoli who may need to replace Edinson Cavani (another player linked with both Man City and Arsenal) in the summer.

Arsenal Vs Everton team news – Fabianski doubt, Rosicky and Mertesacker return

By Stefano on April 15th, 2013

Looks like Arsene Wenger has some interesting decisions to make for tomorrow night’s crucial home game with Everton

1 Who to play in goal? Apparently Lukasz Fabianski took a kick to the ribs during the victory over Norwich and is a major doubt for tomorrow. Mannone has been on the bench recently and had a good run earlier in the season, but might it now be the time to recall the out of sorts Wojciech Szczesny?

2 Who to play in central defence? – Thomas Vermaelen had a reasonable game against Norwich but Wenger clearly sees his strongest pairing as Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, so with the German back after suspension Arsenal’s Belgian captain could be warming the bench again.

3 Who to play at left back? - Gibbs played well against Norwich, though admittedly his crossing was little off. Maybe Nacho Monreal will get the nod tomorrow.

4 How do you accommodate Tomas Rosicky? - The Czech player is available and deserves to be in the side after his superb recent form for the Gunners. But does that mean Wenger will drop Wilshere?

5 Is there room for Podolski and Walcott? Arsenal looked a much stronger team when the pair come on in the second half on Saturday. Walcott may replace Gervinho, but where does that leave Podolski?

Arsene Wenger’s cunning plan for Lukas Podolski

By Stefano on April 15th, 2013

There have been a few rumours about Lukas Podolski recently that he might return to Germany or even try his luck in Serie A. The rumours were further fuelled by the fact that he has only started two games since the end of January.

Arsene Wenger was however quick to praise the German after his excellent cameo appearance against Norwich and insists that Podolski is part of Arsenal’s long term plans.

Wenger said

“He is a quality player and when he comes on you can see that straight away. You don’t get 100 caps by luck. Honestly he has a great attitude. He never moans, he never has a bad phase, he is always positive.”

Interestingly Wenger also revealed that he is working with Podolski, who has been playing mainly as a winger this season, as a main striker.

Wenger said

“I think he can play as a central striker as well. I work a lot with him as a central striker at the moment.”

It is an interesting admission and addresses something has baffled Arsenal fans all season. While Olivier Giroud has had a reasonable first term at The Emirates and has scored goals as well as created assists he is far from the clinical finisher that the Gunners fans are craving.

Conversely Podolski seems utterly clinical when he gets the chance and in spite of his limited appearances has managed to score nine goals this season – about one goal per three games.

The problem for Wenger is that Podolski is not really the type of striker who can hold the ball up and feed other players like Giroud. He also can’t rival Walcott, or many other winger/strikers for pace. His big strength appears to be cutting in from the wing and the unleashing very powerful shots. He is however far from being a traditional winger and quite often tends to get lost in games. His tracking back to help Gibbs and Monreal has also been questionable.

So I don’t think that Arsenal have got the best out of the German this season. Maybe next year we will see him playing more as an out and out striker and that is the role Wenger is grooming him for now.

The key for Wenger then is how do you feed the player? And I wonder if the Arsenal manager has a cunning plan for pairing Podolski with Jovetic? Podolski can yet be an Arsenal legend. But I think much depends on Wenger getting the best out of him.

Arsenal update – Gotze and Capoue

By Stefano on April 15th, 2013

The Daily Mail has a story which suggests that Arsenal have reignited their interest in Borussia Dortmund’s hugely talented midfielder Mario Gotze. Apparently the player has a £30 million release clause in his contract and Wenger is so desperate to land the player that he is ready to activate it.

Of course we have been here before. Gotze was a Wenger target two season ago before he did something that was seen as strange at the time – re-signed with Dortmund. Now it doesn’t look that odd does it – with his team in the last four of the Champions league and some great players Reus, Lewandowski etc to play alongside him.

The rumour is though that the player is now ready to move to the Premier League and that could mean a stint at Arsenal.

If Arsenal did sign Gotze then it would arguably be the club’s biggest signing ever. It would be the priciest but also here is a young player with a glittering future ahead of him who has already proved himself in one of the toughest leagues in the world. You can argue that Henry and Bergkamp were just as big, but then neither player was playing well for their respective clubs when Arsene came knocking.

So is it really going to happen? I take the view that Arsenal do have a good chance of securing both Gotze and Jovetic. Firstly they need Champions League football – or the deals are a non starter anyhow. Secondly the offer and the wages is going to have to significantly exceed what the players are on at the moment. Lastly, and most importantly, Wenger needs to reassure both players that he really does have a vision for the club which will make Arsenal compete with the best in Europe. If not then I think the new signings at the Emirates next season will not come from the Bundesliga or Serie A but from QPR.

The other sliver of hope that Arsenal fans should cling to is that Man City, Chelsea and PSG can’t mop up all of Europe’s top players. For example do Chelsea really need Gotze when they have both Mata and Hazard? How many strikers are City going to sign in the summer? Three?

So for the moment much rests on Arsene Wenger. If he can convince Europe elite players that Arsenal really are back in business then Gotze and Jovetic might yet end up wearing red and white.

The Capoue rumour is also in the Mail too. The Toulouse midfield stopper would be an excellent addition to the Arsenal squad, but I do think that Song could be back at Arsenal next season, especially if Wenger gets him on cut-price deal.

Should Man United fans be worried about RVP’s goal drought? 1 goal in 13 games…

By Stefano on April 12th, 2013

There is one certainty in football this season and that is that Robin Van Persie will score for Man United when they visit The Emirates on Sunday April 28th.

If his current form is any barometer too it will be the Dutchman’s second league goal in 15 games.

For after a blistering start to the season Van Persie has struggled at United. His overall play has been fine and in many ways he has been unlucky. But one goal in 13 games for the club tells its own story. Interestingly the man who (kind of) replaced him Olivier Giroud has scored seven goals in his last 13 games – and most Arsenal fans would argue that his first season for them has been at best mixed.

It is hard to work out if this mid-season dip is something that RVP suffered at Arsenal. This is largely because in all his years at the club the Gunners only really got two full seasons out of the player. Last year, for example, the longest he went without a goal was four games, in fact it was rarely more than two.

If RVP fails to score next match he will equal Torres’ longest run without a goal at Chelsea.

At the moment it arguably doesn’t matter a great deal. Van Persie’s goals from earlier in the season – and let’s not forget how prolific he was and how many games he won for the club – has propelled the team to the title.

But had it been a much closer race I wonder if Fergie, to say nothing of the United fans, been so forgiving?

There are also rumours of strikers heading to United from Falcao through to Lewandowski. But who are they going to replace – Rooney? Wellbeck?

I do wonder if RVP will be remembered by United fans as a player who excelled for half a season and then quietly slipped out of view.

So United fans – does RVP still have a big role to play at Old Trafford. Or are those injuries starting to catch up with him?

Wenger confirms Arshavin’s Arsenal exit

By Stefano on April 12th, 2013

Some sad, but to be honest not that unexpected news this morning. Arsene Wenger has pretty much confirmed in his morning pre-Norwich game press conference that Russian winger Andrey Arshavin will be leaving the club in the summer.

Arshavin was Wenger’s record signing when he joined the club from Zenit St Petersburg in 2009 for £15 million. However, after playing well for a season or so the Russian’s form dipped and recently he has become a shadow of the player that make games like this so exciting.

Wenger said

“He is at the end of his contract at the end of the season and then he will decide what to do, but I don’t think he will stay here because he doesn’t play enough. I must say publicly that I give him credit. He is working absolutely every session 100 per cent commitment and he is an example to everybody because he has been questioned about his commitment.

“If you see him every day, you would respect him for his commitment.”

Liverpool ahead of Arsenal in race to sign Ashley Williams

By Stefano on April 12th, 2013

Ashley Williams is apparently Arsene Wenger’s number one centre half target as he bids to strengthen a defence that has proved Arsenal’s undoing many times this season.

The Mirror though claims that it is unlikely that the Frenchman will get his man with Williams favouring a move to Liverpool.

There appears to be every little substance to the story (which is also covered in a number of other papers) other than a re-iteration of things we know already – that Williams is a massive Liverpool fan who idolised John Barnes and that the player would jump at the chance of working again with old Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers.

Arsenal are wiling to bid at least £9million, though they could potentially offer more give the size of their war chest. They are also more likely than Liverpool to be able to offer Williams Champions League football. Several papers suggest that Liverpool will need to spend £12 million to secure Williams.

If Williams does sign for Liverpool Arsenal could renew their interest in QPR’s Chris Samba or if they want to spend big Borussia Dortmund’s highly rated Mats Hummels.

How Norwich can hurt Arsenal – plan B

By Stefano on April 12th, 2013

Amongst Paul Lambert’s chopping and changing last season, Grant Holt was one of the few constant features of the Norwich City side that finished comfortably mid-table in their first campaign back in the Premier League. His rise through the divisions was remarkable League Two, League One, Championship and Premier League in four consecutive campaigns and with 15 goals in his debut season, some suggested he’d be a decent ‘Plan B’ for England.
After a transfer request and a quick U-turn, Holt laughed off suggestions he wouldn’t be as motivated, having secured a new contract in the summer. But while Norwich haven’t quite experienced ‘second season syndrome’, Holt has.

Just five league goals is a significant drop from last season, with his all-round game also less impressive under Chris Hughton than under Lambert. Since Holt missed a late minute penalty against Southampton last month, Hughton has dropped him to the bench, favouring loanee Kei Kamara as the lone striker. The Sierra Leonean is accustomed to playing on the wings from his time in MLS, and is more of an all-rounder than Holt, able to work the channels on the break.

This will be particularly useful away at Arsenal this weekend, where Norwich will play on the counter-attack. Kamara will hope to pull Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen, who hasn’t played for a few weeks, out of position before spinning in behind.

Holt has become used to life as a supersub; his last three Premier League appearances have been from the bench, with his frustration at his reduced role summed up by the fact he’s been cautioned in all three substitute appearances. At the Emirates this weekend he’s likely to be a Plan B. No-one is calling for an England call-up these days.

Can Arsenal’s excellent run of form carry them through to 3rd place?

By Stefano on April 11th, 2013

Arsenal fan Julius @OneGunn3r on why the battle for third and fourth is set to get very, very interesting

As our North London rivals can vouch, it is remarkably easy to get carried away on the back of a string of good results. Since Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale danced round a hapless and hopeless Arsenal defence 37 days ago, the Gunners’ resultant form has been second only to that of champions-elect Manchester United. This has made the race for third and fourth much more interesting, especially when you factor in how awry it has gone for Tottenham.

Villas-Boas (or AVB) confidently asserted that his side’s 2-1 win over an anaemic Arsenal would send his team into an “upward spiral”, and cast us into one of the downward type. Of course, we have heard much from up the Seven Sisters road about a “shift in power”, as if some sort of seismic earthquake rips through Islington whenever a relatively assailable gap appears.

There was even Robbie Keane’s belief that 2009/10 would be the season Spurs were ready to sail past a sinking ship, Arsene Wenger frantically calling for lifeboats and all. Of course, that belief never materialised. Last season, ‘Arry was talking of a similar shift, going as far to say that “If we keep up form, we’ll win the league”. They didn’t win the league. Or finish above Arsenal.

Since that awful day for anyone in red and white at the Lane, Tottenham have won two of the proceeding seven matches. They have only mustered up ten goals in that time and have conceded twelve. In the league, they have won just once in four attempts, failing to even hit the net at home against notoriously bad travellers Fulham. In that time, Arsenal have won four on the trot, including the gloriously disappointing night in Munich and an impressive win at West Brom. With a game in hand, albeit against Everton, that famous gap has shrunk to two points. It is back in Arsenal’s hands.

There will be difficulties for both sides in the N postcode. The Gunners welcome Everton and Manchester United to the Emirates in a fixture list that includes trips to Fulham, QPR and Newcastle, three away fixtures in which we picked up a solitary point last season. It will surely be even harder for Spurs. Should they progress against Basel, they will have to sandwich in another pair of European games on top of visits to Wigan, Stoke and Chelsea and still find a way of beating Manchester City at home.

Technically, both sides can reach the top four if Spurs gain more points than Chelsea and beat them at Stamford Bridge. But unless there is an incredible collapse at the Etihad, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal must tussle for two Champions League spots. That obviously cannot work, so one must fall out of the running. If history tells us anything, it is that there will be a lot more twists and turns.

It was at this stage last year when Arsenal had established a healthy lead over Spurs and seemed to be coasting into the top three (the only guaranteed path given Chelsea’s progress in the knockout stages of the competition itself). Hiccups against Wigan, Noriwch, QPR and Stoke allowed Tottenham back into the running, who complied with victories over Blackburn and Bolton.

Had they beaten Aston Villa, Spurs could actually have leapfrogged Arsenal to head into third before the ultimate final day, but an early red card for Danny Rose meant they could only draw 1-1 at Aston Villa. The final day came and went, with Arsenal ending up with the somewhat oddly coveted crown of qualifying for a competition they were hardly going to win.

The rest of the season will be an entertaining spectacle for any neutral. It seems unlikely that both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will end up with premier European football next season, and whoever wins the battle will be able to take the bragging rights which Arsenal have hogged since George Michael was top of the charts with “Fastlove”.

Walcott and Wilshere are back for Arsenal against Norwich. But should Wenger start them?

By Stefano on April 11th, 2013

The news from Arsenal just keeps on getting better. The club is in arguably its best form of the season, has a very winnable game against Norwich on Saturday, and now it appears too that the club’s missing star English players are back from injury.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that both Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott are going to be in the squad for Saturday. The manager told the official club website…

“Jack has joined normal training since Wednesday and Theo should join in tomorrow. They are 90 per cent available for Saturday.”

Wilshere has been out for six weeks with an ankle injury, while Walcott injured his hip playing for England last month.

The only bad news for Arsenal is that two-goal Tomas Rosicky could miss the game.

“The other uncertainty we have from last Saturday is Tomas Rosicky, who has a little hamstring irritation.

“His involvement is yet to be decided as well but it’s fair to say that he is a big doubt for Saturday.”

Rosicky’s absence may force Wenger’s hands on playing at least one of the England pair. Ultimately thought it is a shame to change a winning team, even if they did spend a chunk of the second half on the back foot against West Brom.

Santi Cazorla appears top be playing some of his best football in the more central role that he has inherited since Wilshere’s injury, so I wonder if the midfield trio will be Ramsey, Arteta and Cazorla with Walcott and Podolski on the wings. At least then Wenger has the option of bringing Wilshere on if Arsenal are struggling.

Also Wenger has to think about the upcoming Everton game on Tuesday – a much harder match and one that might have a huge impact on the campaign for Champions league qualification.

Mertesacker is suspended, so Thomas Vermaelen is sure to start.

Four reasons why Arsenal are now favourites for third place – not just Bale’s injury

By Stefano on April 5th, 2013

It wasn’t that long ago that Arsenal seemed to be heading for a Europa league slot with the growing chorus of fans calling for a change of manager.

Well the ‘Wenger out’ brigade seemed to have been silenced by a run of form that has put Arsenal right back in the race for a Champions League slot. In fact even though the club are currently two points behind Chelsea and four behind Spurs (who have played a game more) I think that they are now favourites to even grab third place. Here’s why

1 Spurs injuries – and it isn’t just the headline Bale right ankle – Spurs are struggling with a lot of injuries. Also sidelined at the moment are Younès Kaboul (knee), Jermain Defoe (pelvis), and Sandro (knee) and Aaron Lennon and William Gallas are both having scans on injuries today.

Of course the big problem is Bale. It isn’t that Spurs are a one player team, but it is clear that Bale gives the whole side a huge dollop of self-belief – he has become their talisman. At the time of writing we don’t know how bad his injury is. At best Bale will be out for two games. The likelihood is that it will likely be more. If Bale doesn’t return for Spurs fans there is the nightmare prospect that they might have seen Bale in a Spurs shirt for the last time on Thursday.

2 Chelsea’s cup distractions – There is an irony in that what Chelsea fans see as a disappointing season, might end with an overflowing trophy cabinet. The Blues are a good bet to win both the FA Cup (if they can overcome Man City) and The Europa Cup too. The downside is that the cup run is forcing Benitez into shuffling his squad and as we saw in the game against Southampton it doesn’t always end well for the Blues. So Rafa – what is your priority? Up until now it has been the cups. I think it might stay that way too.

3 Arsenal’s run in – Of the three teams Arsenal have the least painful run in (though Spurs’ run in gets easier at the end). Home games against Norwich and Wigan coupled with trips to West Brom, Fulham and QPR are all winnable. Sure they face Man United, but by the time the Reds reach The Emirates the Premiership could have been won already. If that’s the case there’s a good shout that the Gunners might scrape a point or even a victory. Let’s not forget that Spurs face Man City while Chelsea play Liverpool and Man United away. Then there’s the small matter of them playing each other at Stamford Bridge.

4 Arsenal have most to lose by not qualifying for the Champions League - Of the three teams I think that Arsenal probably want Champions League football more than their London rivals, and this is one of the reasons why they have put together such a good run. If they qualify for the CL then Wenger will get his £70 million bounty which could means that Arsenal make a more sustained challenge for the title next season. Wenger is also eyeing up his future. His contract runs out at the end of next season. How ironic would it be that a manager who has consistently delivered CL football should end his managerial tenure fighting for the Europa League.

Ultimately not making the CL cut would be a disaster for the Gunners. As for Spurs it would mean another season of rebuilding possibly with the money from a Bale transfer, and Chelsea’s big bag of cash should mean that even if they play their European footy on a Thursday night and not a Tuesday or Wednesday that they will still be able to attract Europe’s elite players.

I should also mention that Arsenal are playing their best football of the season at the moment and that’s without their two key Englishmen Walcott and Wilshere, who are likely to give the side another boost when they return later ion in the campaign.

So Arsenal – third place really is yours to lose.

Stevan Jovetic – he is coming to Arsenal – or is he?

By Stefano on April 5th, 2013

Well the honest answer is that of course we still don’t really know, There was a huge buzz about the move earlier in the week when Caught Offside intimated that the deal was almost done and that personal terms had been agreed with the player.

Their story was then picked up by several other news sources. However at the same time French paper La Nazione suggested that Arsenal were falling behind City in the race to scoop the brilliant Montenegrin striker.

What is certain is that Jovetic is unlikely to make any decision until he knows the Champions league status of the clubs. Sure he could still do a deal with Arsenal if the club finish outside the top four, but it would be more unlikely.

As for City, the club has been linked with so many top class strikers and ironically if Chelsea don’t make the CL then they may have a clearer run at a few of them.

I don’t think Arsenal fans should be too concerned for now. If the club qualify for the CL place they will be in a string position to sign a world class striker. Jovetic would be an possible RVP replacement, but he is not the only option.

Arsenal update – Wilshere and Walcott news

By Stefano on April 5th, 2013

Not good news for Arsenal fans. That all important run-in is going to be that little bit more difficult as it now appears that neither Theo Walcott or Jack Wilshere will be back for the Norwich game on April 13th.

Arsene Wenger is expected to confirm today that the two English stars are struggling to regain fitness. According to the Express Wilshere has been out since the beginning of March with a foot problem and now looks like he might only make it back in time for the crucial Everton game on April 16th

The same is true for Walcott, who was injured on England duty. Arsenal gave four games in fourteen days starting with a trip to West Brom on Saturday.

Wenger will be encouraged by the fact that the side doesn’t appear to be missing the duo too greatly.

Wenger plots Borussia Dortmund raid and mulls over Arsenal return for Alex Song

By Stefano on April 2nd, 2013

Tonight Barcelona take on PSG in the first leg of their Champions League quarter finals. One player who is unlikely to start is the club’s misfit midfielder Alex Song.

Since signing for Arsenal in the summer Sing has made very little impression at the Catalan club and was even named the second worst signing of 2012 after Real Madrid’s Luka Modric in a poll carried out by Spanish paper Marca.

There are reports though that Song’s Spanish sojourn is all but over and that the player could be heading back to the Premiership, and maybe even Arsenal.

The Express is claiming that Song could be sold for £12.7million and that Arsenal are likely to have first option on the player. Barca still owe Arsenal plenty of money not just for Song but also for Fabregas who signed the year before.

There are also lots of reports that Arsenal are looking to plunder the Bundesliga with Mario Götze and Robert Lewandowski of Borussia Dortmund two of Arsene Wenger’s biggest targets. Lewandowski is the Bundesliga’s leading scorer and would significantly eat into the £70 million wear chest that Wenger has.

Now HITC is suggesting
that another Borussia Dortmund player on Arsene Wenger’s radar is midfielder Marco Reus. The website hints that the deal could depend on the status of one of the club’s veterans Tomas Rosicky.

Reus told The Guardian…

“My idol was always Tomas Rosicky. He used to be phenomenal. He had such a good eye for an opening and knew where his team-mates were, and he was so quick. Rosicky had great technique and was so intelligent and mature.”

Rosicky’s opportunities have been limited this season and it has been widely rumoured that the player will make a switch to the Bundesliga in the summer. However if Rosicky could help Wenger land Reus, who is reportedly keen on a move to the Premiership, he might be staying a little longer at The Emirates. Reus is having a corking seasons with ten goals and nine assists in 27 starts.

Arsenal have also been linked with another Dortmund player in central defender Mats Hummels. There could be a seriously Germanic flavour to the London team next season.

Arsenal’s run in – Reading, and then four more winnable games. 15 points?

By Stefano on March 28th, 2013

It is no exaggeration to say that Arsenal’s entire season could swing on the result of the game at home to Reading on Saturday.

On paper is it not just a should win – but a must win too. For if Arsenal can win well – and keep some of the momentum they have from their impressive win against Bayern Munich – then they can set themselves up for the first part of a run in that should see them comfortably in the top four by the end of the month.

Drop points and it will take an enormous job to get the team to believe that they can outpace Spurs, let along Chelsea.

Reading should be an easy three pointer for the side. They have already beaten the Berkshire side twice this season once in the league (a comfortable 5-2) and then again in a very memorable Carling Cup game. However Reading are in a bitter relegation battle and with new manager Nigel Adkins to spur them on the game looks trickier than it did a few weeks back.

Arsenal are without some key players. Wilshere is two weeks from a return, while it has come too quickly for his England team mate Theo Walcott. Diaby is still injured and Kieran Gibbs is out with an illness.

Arsenal should still be able to field a strong team bolstered by the return from injury of both Podolski and Sagna.

Their problem could be scoring . Olivier Giroud hasn’t scored a Premiership goal since January, so there is added pressure on him and also Podolski, to help maintain Arsenal’s upward momentum.

On the positive side Santi Cazorla has been in fine form recently and with Podolski back and Wilshere sidelined he is likely to start in the centre of the midfield – arguably his most influential position.

Win on Saturday and Arsenal then face four other games which they should be able to gain plenty of points. The trickiest is the first – away at West Brom – but that really ought to a game in which Arsenal start as favourites. Then The Gunners entertain Norwich and Everton at the Emirates before traveling to Craven Cottage to meet Fulham.

Twelve points out of fifteen would probably see the Gunners back in the top four. Fifteen points is a very real possibility and if Arsenal can put a winning run together you would have to fancy them to hang on to a Champions League place.

At the end of the month the visitors to The Emirates are Manchester United, who in theory could be Champions by then. It is of course a game given extra spice by the return of one Robin Van Persie.

So how many points do you think Arsenal win take from the next five games?
