These desert boots by Ask The Missus at Office are one of my picks for the summer. There is a real charm to wearing desert boots with turn ups and no socks and the bold colour which usually works best on sneakers is becoming increasingly popular in more formal, traditional shoes such as the Paul Smith deck shoes from this time last year.
The trend for native American inspired pieces continues and American based label Quoddy takes their name from the old Passamaquoddy tribe. With an expertise in handsewn craftsmanship, the company has been making shoes since 1909. They believe in the old practice of one workman to one pair of shoes, doing the whole process, so these are of a fantastic quality. I particularly love the ‘Grizzly’ boots, partly because they remind me of the Shofolk ‘Andre’ shoes but with a slightly nicer toe. They are going to be available at End Clothing on 9th of April.

The Sperry collaboration with Scott Sternberg from Band Of Outsiders continues for another season. The deck boots of last summer sparked a huge trend and this season, the boots are back in a black gingham and I don’t know if it’s me being taken aback by how nice the colourway is in contrast to the colour blocking they did on some of last seasons models, but are the nicest deck boots so far. The penny loafers are also back with an all suede upper, canvas lining and Sperry deck sole. They come either navy, or brown. My favorite piece in the collection is the emerald green deck shoes above. The upper is washed out rough nylon and suede, they have a canvas lining and three eyelets. They are the most beautiful shape, and although deck shoes might be going a bit stale this summer, with Sperry X Band of Outsiders, your feet will look as fresh as anything. All the styles mentioned are available to view in the gallery and are now being stocked by Colette.

I also found this A-Z of summer video using Band Of Outsiders clothes from the Spring 2009 collection, it’s a short, charming motion graphics piece and was made after the creator did an internship with the company.

Last SS, gladiator sandals were flirting around the fringes of mainstream fashion, with Acne producing one of the most popular styles and the high-street producing some relatively nice ones for around £30. They’ll be everywhere this summer and as always, the designers have raised the stakes. Lanvin have produced some lavish, rather effeminate ones, with bold colours and interesting fabrics, yet it’s not the gladiator which is the trend that appears to be emerging.
The lace up ankle sandals are a really interesting concept, because, unlike the gladiator which is a classic sandal style, the lace ups have the same silhouette as an ankle boot. LuisaViaRoma have by far the best range and feature ones by Sergio Rossi, Michetti Danielle and Miharayasuhiro.
They’re not going to be easy to pull off, but if you want to try out the trend, then I’d suggest cut-out shoes. Some of the styles I’ve seen seem really narrow and to be honest, not particularly nice. These ones are a winner though.

This collection is going to be available from May 10th at Topman’s London flagship store, the New York store and online. It features two designs. One an oxford style shoe and the other is a desert boot design. They all feature the brick red EVA wedge sole which can be found on Oliver Spencer shoes. The full collection is available to see after the jump.

With summer fast approaching the wet should be behind us relatively soon. That means that suede in other colours than black and brown will be wearable. Many spring summer collections have featured bright, light brogues. An alternative to deck shoes, they incorporate the preppy trend continuing from SS/09.
The high street is catching on, with ASOS releasing affordable grey suede brogues with some pastel pink laces and even River Island releasing a rather tasteful soft blue pair.
Towards the higher end of the market, Reiss once again show their spring summer range to be very strong, and fresh from appearing in the Sunday Times Style magazine, the blue brogues with contrast laces look set to be popular this summer. Alongside these, Grenson, who were very popular last year, with their leather brogues and ankle boots proving a must have amongst the fashion forward, return this season with some light grey suede brogue shoes with cream laces and silver eyelet holes. All of the mentioned shoes and links on where to get them are available to see in the gallery.

Reiss continue their more trend led approach this season with the release of two styles of driving shoe, which, if last summer you missed out on the rolled up chino, is going to back again this summer. The lace-less ‘Whatts’ model features eyelets going all around just like a standard deck shoe but with a penny loafer styling at the front whereas the ‘Jones’ is exactly the same silhouette but one eyelet of lace. The different colours available can be seen in the gallery along with how Reiss have styled them. Personally I think the navy double breasted blazer works best.

Maybe its something to do with the fact that shoes for the last few years have been low profile (read: thin soled) but there’s something about the chunky soles on a pair of classic Vans canvas boat shoes that is looking very right now. Gorgeous photo blog Backyard Bill captures the essential cool of white Vans in the latest update, featuring the charmingly named Pete Sparrow. This UK-born-Manhattan-living adonis pairs his Vans with everything, from swimming shorts and rolled up indigo denim to, my favourite, these pale, loose jogging pants.
Of course photogenic Mr Sparrow could make pretty much anything look cool, but I stand by my assertion that thick-soled Vans are looking pretty hot right now, making them anything but just another pair of white plimsolls. Also seen recently in my Unis shorts post, Office have Vans in stock in a range of tempting colours besides white, the navy ones being notable for their nautical air.

Puma have been digging around in the dead stock closet and come out with a butt load of new Suede colours hitting the shelves at the end of the summer. Puma Suedes akin to the Reebok Pump, the Adidas Shell Toes and the Nike Air Max1 are mega players in the sneaker world, never looking dated and always being refreshed with new colourways.
If you really like to draw attention then why not team a pair of these with some bleached denim when they drop late August. Available from Wellgosh and other top retailers.

It seems in fashion we always want to be at the next destination, now. So it is that we haven’t even hit August yet and some of us are already thinking ahead to what to wear in the fall. Of course, the fact that collections are shown out of sync with actual seasons doesn’t help. An extreme example I’m faced with is wanting ALL of the McQueen shoe collection from S/S10 right now.
Selectism.com have been giving sneak previews of the McQueen S/S10 shoe collection, when THOSE paint splattered lovelies, will apparently also be available as trainers. Picking up on the folk-art patchwork and paint splattering seen in his recent film-presentation-as-show in Milan, the trainers seen here feature both of these themes as gorgeous detailing. Patience is, I guess, a virtue but in the wicked world of fashion it is sometimes sorely tested.

Tasselled loafers have been on our radar for yonks now, and this summer saw deck shoes really break into mainstream menswear but are we ready for a hybrid?
ASOS seem to think so with their fringe tie deck shoe, it has all the retro casual of a deck shoe with the dandy addition of a tassel. As if that wasn’t enough it also features a kiltie, we are big fans of the little fringed tab! What do you think? Take our poll and let us know!
On the left, you have the original Air Max 1 which dates back from 1987 and on the right, the revamped Air Maxim.
Tinker Hatfield, the original Air Max designer entrusted Jesse Leyve with the revamp who said: “We took the original Air Max 1 design brief and ran it through a present-day filter” It’s amazing how something over 20 years old looks as fresh as it did back in 1987, but we’re currently torn between the old version and the new one.
The Nike reissue is hitting their pop-up store in August and the Maxim will be released nationwide in the next few weeks.
Lee Douros is the menswear buyer for my-wardrobe and at the last press day we had a great chat with him about men’s clothing and the online side of things. Lee definitely knows his stuff, so we were thrilled when he agreed to present his top summer picks for us. If you’re still stuck for high-summer chic then this is like the holy grail. Stay tuned for pt2!
