Lou Dalton’s spring/summer 2012 collection is all about shorts: medium shorts, short shorts and long shorts… ok the latter is probably just called trousers but you get the idea. Teamed with bomber jackets and some more tailored top pieces, the collection was a rather monochrome experience.

You might think black for summer is a bit dark and twisted, but not for Lou Dalton’s Charming Men. And with her influence for the collection coming from Swan Lake and the UK miners’ strike in 1984 it all kind of makes sense.

What do you think of Lou Dalton’s collection?

This is definitely exquisite ’tailoring with oomph’. Paul Costelloe says the inspiration for his spring/summer 2012 collection is comes from the 1962 Hollywood classic Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? That may very well be, but we can’t help to think of the dapper Mad Men and Michael Caine in 70′s film Get Carter.

Final Uniqlo +J collection Lookbook

By Laura on August 19th, 2011

A few weeks we announced that the upcoming fall/winter +J collection for Uniqlo would be the last. The lookbook is now out, and I have to say this is possibly the strongest collection yet.

There has undeniably been plenty of hype surrounding this final collection, but I can’t get enough of the contrasting colors, linear cuts and the mix of tech-infused materials with traditional fabrics.

Jil Sander’s was one of the first high-fashion designers to collaborate with a mass-market brand like this, and in many ways really set the benchmark for these types of collections. She has continually brought her own unique, dark and structural aesthetic to the Japanese retailer, and this collection is no exception.

One of the most interesting features of this collection is the mix of sportswear with highly tailored pieces. Although it might seem an unusual combination, it is a look that we are seeing quite a bit of at the moment, and something we expect to take off this winter.

The fianl J+ collection will be Available soon in Uniqlo stores the world over.

Edun Autumn/Winter 2011 Menswear Collection

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on August 17th, 2011

Summer seems to have escaped this year with a chilling 14 degrees this morning when I left the house. But as much as I love sun and park life, I can’t help but to love the colder months when you get to wrap up warm in wonderful clothes – my growing up in the Arctic could also be a reason for this… and my love for ‘look-at-me’ knitwear.

If you’re looking to invest in your winter wardrobe but want to do it in a green way, Edun is the place to look. The brand of Ali Hewson and Bono – yes that Bono – has an amazing collection out for this autumn/winter that will make you look dashing.

Using layers and dimension to create a well-travelled feel that is juxtaposed with modern silhouettes, Edun offers unique styles with added pockets, stitching and darting details, and the sweaters and knits span the spectrum, from lightweight layering to a fresh twist on vintage Fair Isles patterns.

Trousers range from clean, slim and straight tailored to tapered leg and drop crotch. Something for everyone! The denim is work wear influenced and most of it is made from recycled fabrics in Africa, with an organic wash to finish.

The seasons’ colour choices are inspired by natural elements such as stone and ash accented with petrol and ice, whereas red brick and cranberry wine play off sediment black and dark neutrals, like storm and tar, are accented with raisin, mulberry and peacock.

This is definitely style with substance!

Burberry Autumn 2011 Campaign Looks

By Laura on June 19th, 2011

It hardly feels as though we have had a summer, but Burberry have already unveiled their Autumn 2011 campaign looks.

Featuring a number of British actors, models and musicians, Chief Creative Officer Christopher Bailey, stated he was “inspired by iconic British portraits and our own archive campaigns from the late 1960s of Jean Shrimpton using her trench coat to shelter herself from the poetic and romantic British weather.”

What do you think?

GANT Rugger’s Pre-Autumn 2011 collection

By Laura on May 17th, 2011

GANT is one of those brands I often forget about, but really should keep on my radar. The GANT Rugger’s Pre-Autumn 2011 collection is a perfect example of why. Their 3rd quarter offering, includes the classic ivy-life inspired wears we have come to expect. However, this latest incarnation are slightly more tailored for a stronger fit.

The collection delivers online now and there are definitely a few pieces you could start wearing now.

London Fashion Week – Acne Fall 2011 collection

By Laura on February 23rd, 2011

When Acne creative director Jonny Johansson was asked about the Men’s Fall 2011 collection he shrugged and stated “All the tailoring—I thought that was in the moment, something fresh. I’m tired of all this heritage, the older models or whatever. It’s time for something young.” Here at Brandish we completely agree!

The collection includes a series of overcoats paired with suit pants, as well as very sartorial two-piecers. With TV influences like Mad Men the suit is becoming increasingly popular amongst younger generations and it’s labels like Acne that they’ll turn to.

The collection over all is very youthful with slightly cropped pants and low-buttoning jackets in different styles all in Italian bonded wool. The pallet sees accents of raspberry, royal blue, or teal. Johansson stated that the clothing was made for “that moment when you’re not grown up and at the same time, not a kid. The kind of sexual energy that brings.”

Rag & Bone 2011 Fall Collection

By Laura on February 13th, 2011

British design duo Marcus Wainwright and David Neville have just showcased their Fall 2011 collection for the NYC-based label rag & bone. They may be better known for their denim heritage, but as this collection demonstrates they are now attempting to take menswear to a whole new level.

Although I am not sure about some of the styling, there is no denying they have brought both expert tailoring and layering together to create a truly original look. The collection was inspired by photos of the Duke of Windsor, and the designers incorporated an array of tartan plaids onto everything from jackets and suits to quilted shirts and kilts.

Personally I love the eclectic colour palette that is used across everything from wool suits to quilted leggings. This is a risky collection, but that said I think there are a number of really strong pieces – possibly even some of rag & bone’s best yet.

Check out the full collection in the gallery below.

Junya Watanabe 2011 Fall Collection

By Laura on January 24th, 2011

I am absolutely obsessed with the new fall 2011 Juyan Watanabe collection! From the fabrics to the detailed stitching the Japanese designer has certainly out done himself this time.

Watanabe was originally the protege of Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo. Born in Fukushima, Japan in 1961, he attend Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo, graduating in 1984. It was around this time that he began his apprenticeship at Comme des Garçons as a patternmaker. Eventually he was promoted to chief designer of Tricot knitwear line and then quickly moved on to design for the Comme Des Garçons Homme line. In 1992 he began to work under his own name as part of Comme des Garçons.

This season sees Watanabe steering towards a more contemporary aesthetic seasons, Japanese fashion designer Junya Wathetic than we have seen from him in the past. He builds off basic Americana styles, giving them a more romantic spin. The collection features items such as duffel coats, sport coats, knit sweaters, all with modern tailoring.
Take a look at collection below. What do you think of it?

Style watch: Penny loafers

By Laura on January 11th, 2011

It’s time to dig out your old penny loafers as this classic shoe is beginning to make a bit of a comeback.

In 1934 George Henry Bass (a boot maker in Wilton, Maine) started making loafers and called them Weejuns (meant to sound like Norwegian). These had a strap across the upper part of the vamp that was shaped like a pair of lips. The mouth opening soon was used to hold an ornament (such as a penny), and thus penny loafers became a style. Penny loafers often held a dime instead of a penny.

These days the penny loafer, just like the oxford, has gone through a high-fashion transformation and can be worn with nearly anything in your existing wardrobe.

Check out the gallery below with a few of our favourite loafers.

The Fair Isle knit: Get the Look

By admin on December 9th, 2010

The past few weeks have seen snow shut down half the country, and unfortunately it is only the beginning of the cold weather. As you know, if you are going to keep warm at this time of year, its all about the layers. From thermals to snoods, they keep you staying warm and staying fashionable. A big trend so far this winter has undeniably been chunky knitwear. Whether it is a jumper or cardigan, some thick knitwear is a great addition to any winter wardrobe. However, there is one style in particular that has lead the trend with both high street stores and premium designers – The Fair Isle knit.

The Fair Isle knitting is technique named after the tiny island of Fair Isle, north of Scotland, between the Shetland and Orkney islands. Traditional Fair Isle refers to any colour work knitting using 2 alternating colours and utilises the traditional patterns of the Shetlands. The technique in recent years has been adapted by designers mixing traditional items and techniques with current trends and themes. However, they still remain true to the vintage and country inspired styles.

Fair Isle knits are a simple and classic way to bring colour and warmth to your winter wardrobe. Whats more, it is a trend that is sure to be around for at least another season, fitting well with the Urban Bohemian trend.

Rock the Fair Isle knits with dark washed jeans, military boots, a chunky scarf and camel trench coat to be right on trend. As things warm up in the spring, pair your sweater with rolled up chinos and boat shoes.
