Golden Globes, the guys: Brad Pitt, Zac Efron, Dev Patel and more

By admin on January 13th, 2009

The Golden Globes sent ripples of excitement around the blogosphere and we (royal we, obvs) were up all hours liveblogging the lovely ladies of the silver screen for y’all but what about the guys? It’s obviously going to be less of an event until they let the guys wear something other than black tie (c’mon!?) but take a look at our gallery to see who we picked from the evening, click here to see Leonardo Dicaprio with Kate Winslet.

Alfred Shaheen, man who brought Hawaiian shirts to the masses dies aged 86

By admin on January 6th, 2009

Alfred Shaheen, the man responsible for popularising the Hawaiian shirt died on the 22nd of December.

Taking on his parents’ business after returning from WWII Shaheen built up the company turning it into a million dollar enterprise with a group of highly skilled workers dubbed Alfred Shaheen’s City of Craftsmen.

The Hawaiian shirt or ‘Aloha’ shirt became popular on the islands as dress-down formal wear but it was Shaheen, with the help of stars like Elvis Presley, who helped extend the fashion for Hawaiian shirts across the globe. Check out our gallery to trace the history of the garment.

Gallery: Giles Deacon’s first menswear collection for New Look

By admin on November 21st, 2008

Giles Deacon‘s first ever menswear collection hit the shops yesterday, the 25-piece collection is made up of wearable wardrobe basics. T-shirts, jeans, jackets and shirts are all given the Giles touch with neon detailing and gold chains. This is good news for men’s fashion as it seems that every designer/high street collab now has a menswear range, and not a minute too soon.
We’ve picked out a selection from the collection which is available to buy in New Look stores or online. I think my favourite piece is the grey striped shirt with coral-lined cuffs, what’s yours?

Gallery: Michael Cera in Arrested Development

By admin on November 18th, 2008

During a recent spate of illness (whaddya mean you didn’t notice my absence??!) I watched A LOT of Arrested Development and something struck me, sartorially.

Michael Cera who plays George Michael in the show appears in an array of eye-wateringly good/bad (I haven’t made my mind up yet) outfits mainly composed of chinos, faded ’80s patterned shirts, webbing and leather belts and deck shoes. It’s a look which is incredibly self-effacing but like a Magic Eye if you stare long enough it begins to pop out and assault you with its complexity.

Brandish Does Boulevard: The Second Bout of Street Style!

By Will Reid on October 27th, 2008

This gallery showcases some of the hottest street style looks I’ve seen in quite a while. Granted, some of the photography is a bit shifty (and the background of sun-washed Camden during the summer is enough to provoke resentment from most Brits,) but these looks are on-trend and rival a lot of professionally styled magazine editorials.

Brandish loves street style and there will definitely be more to come in the next few months. Just prepare for rain drops on the camera lens.

Band of Outsiders Holiday Collection

By admin on October 21st, 2008

Band of Outsiders designer Scott Sternberg asked photographer Paul Jasmin to pose for their Holiday Collection in his LA home, it’s a shoot full of character and really gets the message of the clothes across.
The pieces are traditional menswear worn with a casual feel, think mustard velvet waistcoats, gently rumpled shirts and bow ties.

Buy Kenzo Takada’s Paris house

By admin on October 9th, 2008

Fashion designer Kenzo Takada is selling his Paris house after twenty years, and he’s posed for some great pictures to inspire even the most credit crunched to make a purchase.

Kenzo’s house is located on the border of the Bastille and Marais neighbourhoods and was built by the designer himself over the course of six years. It’s an impressive 1,300 square metres and boasts a Koi carp pond and Japanese style dining room.

Brandish Gallery: Paul Newman

By admin on October 7th, 2008

Paul Newman died last week after a battle with lung cancer. I’ve always had a soft spot for the star who made his name acting but also raised millions donating the profits from his ‘Newman’s Own’ range of salad dressings and sauces.
His biggest films included Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, as well as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and later on in his career, The Colour of Money which earnt him an Academy Award.

Here are some of Paul Newman’s finest moments, both sartorially and on screen, click image to start gallery.

Estelle, Ozwald Boateng, Nat Weller, Tolula Adeyemi and snowboarder/model Charlotte Dutton were some of the names who came to Harrods for the launch of a beaming André Benjamin’s Benjamin Bixby menswear line.

André 3000 as he is known to Outkast fans turned up looking suitably retro in turned-up jeans, green polo and a dogstooth jacket.

Kaiser Karl’s Couture

By Jonathan Smith on September 2nd, 2008

More Kaiser Karl for you today and this time it’s a shoot that he has done for issue #96 of Numero. The shoot for a feature called “La Couture” is inspired by film noir and has Lagerfeld’s go-to girls of couture Karmen Pedaru, Heidi Mount and Vlada Roslyakova. Though strictly speaking this is more of a female orientated shoot it does feature a couple of male models and all the outfits look great so it’s worth checking out.

Reader request: skinny grey jeans

By admin on September 1st, 2008

As you can probably tell comments are down on Brandish, so when Nick emailed me asking about grey skinny jeans I clapped my hands together in excitement… A clothing hunt!
I went looking all over the internet for some grey skinny jeans with reasonable success. Hopefully there’s something here for you Nick and if anyone else wants me to don my web-hunting gear or just have a chat about clothes send me an email to isabelle [at] shinymedia.com.

By Jonathan Smith on September 1st, 2008

Last Friday I went out to stalk the streets of Covent Garden with a camera and a hidden agenda. I have chosen some more accessible and practical looks, less suits and boots and more work shirts and trainers. Check out the men here and the women over at catwalkqueen.

Somers Town out now, get some Shane Meadows inspiration

By admin on August 26th, 2008

Somers Town, Shane Meadows’ latest film was released on Friday. Despite being a Eurostar-sponsored affair the film has received good reviews and stars Meadows’ protegé Thomas Turgoose. This is a great excuse to whip out some images from Turgoose’s first film appearance in ‘This Is England’. Rolled up jeans, white socks, braces and loafers make up a trademark Rudeboy look and are all key trends for this Autumn. Have a look at some stunning stills from the film and take note.

Brandish does Boulevard: Neal’s Yard

By Will Reid on August 8th, 2008

Here on Brandish we love a bit of sartorial realism. While Jason deals with cool buys and indie-labels, I tend to veer towards the bright lights of magazines and the high-octane glamour of ridiculously expensive items (WISHLIST anyone?) and the glossy adverts they inhabit.

I do love the high-street and so, with editor’s camera in hand and a trusty phone in the other (who knows what pickle one could get into asking for photos on the streets of Camden?) I set off to find London’s fashionistos.

Gallery: Coldplay’s military look, yay or nay?

By admin on August 1st, 2008

Coldplay’s latest album was released without too much fanfare confirming their status as indie stadium monoliths. They recently played the Air Canada Centre in Toronto where they sported their new military look. It’s a kind of shabby military look apparently inspired by French painter Eugène Delacroix which the band have taken to wearing as their tour uniform.

What do you think of their new look? Take our poll after the jump!
