It looks as if, this summer, you will be mercilessly defined by your haircut. We’ve outlined a few of the trendiest, the possible need for back-up in a can, and now, I have a new look. This piece of major hairspiration comes in the form of the ‘Pale Fountain’ editorial in the latest issue of Crash magazine. I’m loving the almost bark-like quality of this model’s gorgeous copper locks and his overall effortless look means that he can play up his fashion with structural shapes, patterns and brash fabrics (check the velvet and plaid after the jump!) This follows on with the current trend for vampires, supernatural adolescents and dewy youths. So, next up should really be a post on how to find inner vampire. Oh, what a job!
See more from the editorial after the jump!

As we’ve been thinking about our wishlists for Summer 2009, can we also call for an amnesty on the following fashion faux pas? Whilst we’re quite sure that our Brandish readers are beacons of style themselves, this list can be used to convince any errant rule-breakers you might know that 2009 is the year we said no to bad summer style.
1. The Chin Beard. A carefully carved line where your chin meets your neck convinces no-one that you have a strong jawline. If anything it draws attention to wobbly bits or absence of definition. Grow a proper man beard that covers your neck too. Or shave it off.
2. Male muffin tops. Derided on the female of the species, somehow squeezing into a pair of drainpipe skinnies is considered acceptable for an alarming number of larger men. Some people just aren’t formed to wear skin tight, narrow trousers. Embrace your inner Bear and show off those thick, hunky thighs in something more rugged, like carpenter-style jeans.

Kiss and Make Up‘s Zara on jaw defining shaving cream:
If 2008 was the year that mancake rose to power, 2009 has solidified the metrosexuals place in society. We’ve featured the rise of Ab Gel and manscara, well now there’s another potion available for the looks obsessed male. It’s a shaving cream that promises to define the jaw as well as help you whisk away stray hairs.
It’s called the Jaw Line Defining 3 in One Shaving Cream, and is designed to be used with the dry shaving method.
The idea is that the cream helps to tighten and tone the jowl area, by including the ingredient Glaucine to stimulate elasticity. It also contains glycerine and Shea butter to help the razor slide across the skin and is paraben free.
It costs £20 from Mankind, and will be desired by preening males everywhere.

Silver hair is having a moment. As seen on the runway at Calvin Klein and in their current advertising campaign, bleached cropped hair tinted subtle shades of grey-blue puts a new spin on the blue rinse. Equally of note, Aiden Shaw, poet, author, musician and sometime porn star looks incredible with his thick, naturally grey hair in the current Fantastic Man magazine.
Whether you’re a young whippersnapper who wants in on the silver action or have gone grey naturally, a violet-toned shampoo and conditioner is a must to make the most of your grey. The aim is not to out blue-rinse Mrs Slocombe but to tone down any brassiness (particularly if you’re also bleached) and add a subtle tone to make your grey hair something really exceptional. Best product? Aveda‘s Blue Malva Shampoo and Conditioner.

The undercut is gathering steam as THE haircut for summer. A headcount (literally) at trend spots like Bistroteque and The Joiners Arms at the weekend confirmed that this relic of post-punk Britain will be gracing many hipster heads this S/S.
Finally we have a contender for the side-parted floppy fringe (though really this is a development from that). As you can see from these pics, cropping the hair whilst leaving an overhang can be adapted in various ways – its a technique not a style. From full-on Alice Dellal-like long tresses, to almost-mohawk, to a grown out side parting or quiff the options are varied. The contrast in length can either be played up (mousse and blow dry) or left demurely floppy, like a goth Christopher Isherwood. There’s also a choice between whether to go asymetric with a single-sided crop or more faux-mo with both sides clippered. Finally, a bit of inspiration from must-see arthouse film The Fall, new to DVD. Leading man Lee Pace looks mighty fine with his very post-punk/Industrial do adding edge to his matinee-idol homage.

Yesterday, I was on my way to Gatwick after a holiday in Brighton and the radio came on with Jimmy Carr talking about such things as ‘Guyliner’ and ‘Manscara.’ It turned out that Carr had himself been wearing these rather controversial at the Elle Style Awards on Monday night and he explained that “you can’t polish a turd but you can sprinkle glitter on it.”
At Brandish, we have already investigated this trend of man make-up with hilarious videos and opinion pieces. What do you think? Tell us on our Facebook wall.

Doesn’t Fiddy scrub up well? From coke dealer to primped popstar I guess it doesn’t come as that much of a surprise to learn that 50 Cent is planning to release a range of cosmetics for men. Jean Paul Gaultier’s heralded the acceptance of male cosmetics into the mainstream, (and also a hilarious video or two courtesy of Stuart and Sean) and now Curtis James Jackson III is joining the bandwagon.
The line will include moisturiser, night cream and health supplements, a source close to the rapper said “50 prides himself on having a ripped body… he’s on a health kick and barely touches alcohol”.

At a recent friend’s birthday one of the presents which got the most attention was Mr Taylor’s Moustache Wax.
The friend in question does indeed sport a ‘stache and the wax helps him keep it in shape with the merest hint of a handlebar curve at the sides. It also comes in various colours to add a little oopmh to your facial furniture and costs just £5.95 which is a great price for a gentleman’s grooming classic. A great product which if you have facial hair you probably never knew you needed, but once tried will become indispensable.

Favoured by many stylists on location shoots for its miraculous ability to smooth the most wayward of locks into shape, Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groom may be just the tonic your hair needs in this wintry weather.
Uniquely, it’s a creme, not wax, mud, putty or (heaven forbid) a gel and like the best products feels like something of quality from a more stylish past. Rub a little of the buttery, ultra-rich substance into your palm and then smooth through your hair from roots to tips. Silk Groom adds instant gloss and shine and has a wondrous ability to hold without leaving a sticky, matt residue. Just the thing for keeping that side-parting in place, it’s perfect when combined with one of the Kent brushes I posted about recently, enabling you to add a Cary Grant lustre to your weather-beaten do.
Available from the Kiehl’s store in Covent Garden and from leading department stores.

Kanye West revealed his astonishing haircut recently on a TV performance to celebrate Barack Obama’s inauguration. We’ve seen the afro hat but the afro mullet is a new one on me, the slightly enlarged back-section is kind of mirth-making but I have to applaud Kanye for his fashion bravery. What do you think of his hairstyle? Take our poll after the jump!

Beauty expert Zara gives us the ‘need to knows’ on Lynx Bullet: Deodorants aren’t the most exciting things in the world, nut with nifty add campaigns and entertaining TV virals, Lynx has carved out a niche in the market. Their latest development is for the Bullet, their new pocket sized can that can create the ‘Lynx Effect’ when you’re out and about.
But how would one carry such an item? A mere backpack seems like a silly idea- so they’ve designed a custom leather wallet to keep it in.

Winter does bad things to your face, central heating dries it out, icy cold chaps it and makes it sensitive and all that blowing your nose hasn’t helped.
Now is the time to moisturise but don’t even bother unless your skin is clean, a simple unfragranced face wash and lots of lukewarm water should do the trick. Shaving will exfoliate the beard area of the skin, but try some gentle rubbing with a damp facecloth to your nose and forehead to allow the skin to absorb your moisturiser. Any questions? Post them on our Facebook Blog Networks page!

Traditionally part of a gent’s grooming kit, a proper hairbrush is a real treat for the hair and scalp and fits perfectly with our current ‘trad but modern’ zeitgeist.
Kent Brushes offer several styles and have been making high quality brushes since the eighteenth century. Choose between an easy-to-hold oval or classic military square brush, or even a handy travel size. The real bristle options come in chic beech/white or pure black bristles. Perfect for maintaining that side parting whilst giving your scalp some much-needed stimulation in these frosty days and a real investment from only £16.
