England’s Greatest Living Gentleman, Stephen Fry, has been honoured by the patron saints of ice cream, Mr Ben and Mr Jerry.
Fry, who would probably be most people’s choice as the new Doctor Who if only he were a couple of decades younger, acquired the flavour “Even Stephens” while filming Stephen Fry In America.
Apparently it mixes vanilla, chocolate and walnut, and Stephen himself chose those there ingredients. He’s since had a batch sent to him at his lair of gentlemanliness so he can enjoy it at home, the lucky spod. No word on whether you’ll be able to find it at your local Iceland anytime soon, unfortunately.
Imagine how clever you could pretend to be while you stuffed your face with Stephen Fry ice cream. Why, every belch would feel positively loquacious.
GQ has reached the grand old age of twenty, which is no mean feat in this age of declining circulations and competition from the web. The December 2008 anniversary issue has all manner of specialness to recommend it.
For a goldenballed kick-off it’s got David Beckham on the cover. Then there’s the fact that it’s physically the largest edition of the magazine it its history, with 582 pages and a spine measuring 21 MILLIMETRES. Make sure you enter that last stat into your “Fashion Mag Spine Size” wallchart.
The Quantum of Solace première last night was such a big affair even the Royal Family turned up, Princes Harry and William chatted to Chelsea pensioners as profits from the evening went to Help For Heroes and the Royal British Legion.
Daniel Craig sported a sling as he was still recovering from a shoulder operation. Both he and girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell scrubbed up well, him in a neat suit and her in a intricately beaded evening gown. Is it me or is his suit a dark navy? Either way the slim lapels and gently fitted cut looks great.
Bond baddie Mathieu Amalric went for an unusual choice of a double breasted suit without tie but he has more than enough Gallic chic to carry off the insouciant look.

Avid Brandishers will know that we have more than a little soft spot for the man who looks really ruddy likely to be the next U.S President: Barack Obama, so it comes as no surprise that, yes, this is another Obama related post. Though this is not really in any way related to fashion it has been doing the rounds on many of the fashion and culture websites so I thought I’d give it it’s due here on old Brandles.
This short film by 60Frames Entertainment is a pro Obama take on that old main stay of phone answering hilarity: the Budweiser “Wassup” advert. This ad is pretty darned funny even though my memories of the inspiration are tainted by living through a period of my life where I can’t remember making a phone call that wasn’t answered with “WASSSSSSSSAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!”
Ever since Ronnie Wood ran off with his 18-year old mistress Ekaterina Ivanova, I have been keeping my eye on the new couple’s outfits. Throughout history, scandals have been defined by fashion; Princess Diana’s tiger-print swimsuit, Heather Mills’ patchwork suit, Monica Lewinsky’s ‘Blue Dress.’
It struck me that Ronnie and Ivanova were often wearing outfits with a similar theme. On the left, we can see that one week, they both indulged in tie-dye print and during this week, they wore on-trend plaid/tartan jackets.
What do you think of couples in matching outfits? Yay or Nay?
Here comes the inevitable news that Scott Schuman aka The Sartorialist is to release a book. It was only a matter of time before everyone’s favourite street style photographer got a book deal and word is that Harper Collins have agreed to publish the coffee table volume.
Over the last three years Schuman has amassed an awe-inspiring collection of photographs of the world’s most stylish people including Carine Roitfeld, André Benjamin and Anna Wintour. Hopefully it’ll be out by Christmas so I can start dropping hints, it’s already top of my wishlist!
Ever been curious to step into the mind of one of fashion’s designer geniuses? Be curious no more, as you can find out what makes Yves Saint Laurent creative director Stefano Pilati tick when he pops over to London next week to speak at the London College of Fashion.
Part of the Sunday Times Style lecture series, Pilati will participate in a question-and-answer session on October 29 about his climb to the top of the fashion world – and, not being one to mince words (see: “Tom [Ford] is talented but not gifted”) you can bet it’ll be interesting to say the least!
* Tickets are £20 (plus a £2.50 booking fee) and are available by either phoning +44 (0)844 209 0371 or you can book online at www.timesonline.co.uk/fashion.
Being overly negative about other people’s dress sense is something that I’d happily leave to Trinny and Susannah but one particular menswear trend grates on me like nothing else.
They might seem innocuous but bootcut faded and or distressed jeans are a massive bugbear of mine. Richard Hammond, part of the Top Gear triumvirate of bad denim, is the perfect example of how not to wear jeans. The overlong shirt cuffs and ‘rugged’ leather only add to the effect and make him look out of date.
Is this a fashion crime or do you dig bootcut denim? Take our poll after the jump.
Let me know what your fashion pet hates are, and we’ll feature them on Brandish. Just send me an email or write on our Facebook Blog wall!
We’ve already featured the stylish Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio on Brandish, but the band deserve a full mention with their latest video for ‘Dancing Choose’. It features a dizzying collage of Constructivism-inspired shapes and has an ’80s Art of Noise feel, check it out!

Check has undeniable appeal but right now it’s a little overexposed so stick to something with a little more longevity. Make like James Franco and go for gingham, it’s a little more dressed up than indie plaid and has classic appeal. Trust Franco, he appeared on the cover of the last issue of Man About Town; although I’m not so sure I’d follow his footwear having seen long shoes in this picture.

It was bound to be a smart affair when Bloomingdale’s reopened their men’s floor in New York yesterday, and who better to have as party guests than the Mad Men themselves? I like the suits although I must say I’m a little disappointed with Rich Sommer’s choice of footwear… Is that a generic ‘long shoe’ I see?!
That’s right Ed McFarlane of Friendly Fires, pump your fist! For you are wearing a wonderful grey shirt and you’re on Jools Holland singing your new songs. Now off you go on your world tour and spread the word about your new album, but don’t forget to tell people about the shirt!
A political campaign seems to be the ‘It’ accessory of this season. After Tyra Banks posing as Michelle Obama in September’s Harper’s Bazaar, Interview has pulled in Josh Brolin to rock the presidential trend for their latest cover. Josh is actually playing President George Bush in an up-coming film, titled ‘Bush,’ directed by Oliver Stone. However, on the cover he is photographed by Mikael Jansson.
Do you think that the fashion industry is taking the politics trend too far or do you think it’s a necessary evil at a time like this. Tell us on our Facebook page!
French reference book and national institution, Le Petit Larousse has chosen to feature our favourite, Kaiser Karl Lagerfeld as their cover image. The annual book containing a dictionary of commonly used words and an encyclopaedia of proper nouns (all in French obvs.) has in the past chosen cartoon legend Moebius aka Jean Giraud and fashion great Christian Lacroix to rest upon the cover, so it is no stretch to find Lagerfeld’s unforgettable visage on the dictionary.
I love the fact that the French do stuff like this, I also love the fact that the English don’t. Could you imagine looking at the Collins English Dictionary and have Alexander McQueen looking back at you? Thought not.
I want Barack Obama to become the President of the USA. I do. Honestly.
However, telling you guys is enough for me and I don’t feel the need to have his name plastered across each of my outfits. Benji Madden turned up to a Diesel’s 30th Birthday in New York having heavily invested in the trend for Obama-slogan clothes and his political tuppence worth came in the form of a print tee.
