LOVE Magazine- The Masthead and the Madness!

By Will Reid on December 10th, 2008

giles+and+the+luxury+eggs.jpg

Giles Deacon

Fashionista is stating that Katie Grand’s new LOVE magazine (published by Condé Nast,) is a “beacon of hope for the dying magazine industry and its dwindling fashion counterpart.” Well, it may be a beacon of hope for the magazine industry but Grand and her brilliant team have decided to get a head start with a very low-key blog.

The masthead of the magazine was revealed today and a look through the blog revealed such gems as Giles Deacon posing with a pair of Scotch-Egg-Glasses (the ‘it’ accessory of next season?) and fashion editors Francesca Burns and Victoria Young with the likes of Simon Cowelland David Walliams! Who would have guessed that Mark Frith (of Heat and celeb scandal fame,) would be editorial consultant?

Enjoy all the behind-the-scenes pictures as well as the full masthead after the jump!

Love The Look: Nicola Formichetti’s Friends Out In London

By Will Reid on December 9th, 2008

Nicola Formichetti, the fashion extraordinaire and creative director of Dazed & Confused, writes an awesome blog which he manages to update almost three times a week. With pictures from his various trips, nights out, karaoke parties and Tokyo fashion-fests, the blog is a treasure trove of great images and this is no different. The pic was only put up yesterday morning and it shows some of Nicola’s friends posing on a night out in London. I love the leopard-print beanie of the fashionisto on the left and the fur collar of the guy on the right looks like a necessary luxury for the altogether depressing Baltic temperatures we have been feeling in recent times.

Go to Nicola’s blog for more pictures of his glamourous life!

X-Factor finalist Eoghan Quigg

By admin on December 8th, 2008

Despite his Irish genes Eoghan Quigg manages not to make any Boyzone-style disasters in his shirt and waistcoat combo. The dove grey and black is a subtle move while the black buttons provide a nice focal point for the young chap and I wish him all the best in his musical and sartorial endeavours.

There’s just one thing… I can’t ignore the hair. It looks like 2 months-worth of Dax red wax has come to roost on his head by way of some frisky seagulls. He’ll grow out of it.

Vans ICONoclast: Henry Rollins

By Jonathan Smith on December 8th, 2008

Click image to supersize your Rollins

Henry Rollins
the man, the legend, the buzz cut has been named as one of Vans ICONOclasts along with other (but less awesome) icons; Lemmy Klimister, Stacy Peratta, Robert Williams, John Cardiel, Wes Humpston, Joel Tudor and Colette. This campaign from Vans is an insight into each of the ICONoclasts believes, who their icons are and what they think ICONoclast means. I’m not so fussed about what any of the other ‘Icons’ have to say, perhaps with the exception of Lemmy but I freaking love Henry Rollins, he’s smart, funny, build like a brick shit house and in this of climate quiffs and 1920′s heavy knit jerseys he is a man with a pair of clippers and a plain black t-shirt who can out cool you all, proving once again that cool doesn’t and isn’t try hard.

Though my enthusiasm wanes over certain ICONoclasts I have to say all these people have in some small way influenced popular culture and fashion so it’s well worth a read, even if you have no interest in any of these peeps or don’t even know who they are. Check the site out here, treat it as a reference point on how to think cool as well as look cool.

Tom Cruise: New York Times T Style- Holiday 2008

By Will Reid on December 8th, 2008

dl.jpgTom Cruise and Katie Holmes have appeared in the latest issue of New York Times T Style looking actually quite alright in full-on Old-Hollywood shots by the genius fashion photographer Solve Sundsbo. The pair look as if they have stepped off a film set in sharp tailoring and, after all those Scientology-maniac rumours, it seems quite fitting that they take the covers of the magazine’s ‘Reinvention Issue.’

Love the Look: Bill Hailey and his Comets

By admin on December 3rd, 2008

I’m a little in awe of this picture of Bill Hailey and his Comets from 1957, the energy and movement make it such a great shot.
I love the tartan jackets, they feel a little bit christmassy and the check is a good quality print. To get a ’50s influenced look with tartan wear a traditional check scarf with a pair of simple, neat black jeans and t-shirt with a zip-up jacket. Greased hair and brothel creepers are compulsory.

Futureheads’ Barry Hynde joins waistcoat gang

By admin on December 2nd, 2008

barry hynde futureheads waistcoat.jpg
The saga of how to wear your waistcoat is reaching epic proportions and I hear there are plans to make the story into a musical in 2012.
You might have to endure a few Boyzone tunes but that’s no big deal when you also have TV on the Radio to sing along to, and now the Futureheads are getting in on the act. Vocalist Barry Hynde sported a subdued combo of black waistcoat and grey t-shirt for their gig at the Astoria in London.

Celeb Style: Ashton Kutcher at ‘Flawless’ Premiere

By Will Reid on December 2nd, 2008

ashton kutcher demi moore flawless film premiere.jpgAshton Kutcher is one of my low-key style icons. Firstly, he started out as a model and it was he who introduced the now infamous ‘trucker cap’ to the fashion scene. Rumours were rife of a fashion collaboration when he was spotted note-taking in the front rows of fashion weeks and now he has provided us with even more style inspiration.

At the premiere of Demi Moore’s new film, ‘Flawless,’ Ashton was a picture of muted luxury with his regal red tie, opulent tweed coat and not-too-flashy Louis Vuitton scarf. This is a look that anyone can copy this Winter!

Oh Dear- Is Someone Feeling The Credit Crunch?

By Will Reid on December 2nd, 2008

ramsey.jpgYesterday we saw Jamie Hince donning a rather hobo-chic look and today we hear that Tony Simm, a Gordon Ramsay lookalike (emm…not quite,) has come forward to tell the world of how he is being verbally attacked as a result of the famous TV Chef’s supposed-affair.

Simm, aged 50, tells the Daily Mail that “everyone used to like him, and being his double meant I’d get lots of good attention everytime I left the house. But since the news of him and his alleged mistress hit the headlines, I’ve been called a love cheat by about 50 angry women of all ages.”

Simm also states that “it’s great that people are confusing me with the real deal, but I must admit I’m not totally happy about the fallout this has created.” Well, I guess that’s another reason to not give up the day job.

It’s different for boys: Jamie Hince, more shabby than chic?

By admin on December 1st, 2008

jamie hince scruffy rock kate moss.jpg

Looking at this image of Jamie Hince stepping after a night at girlfriend Kate Moss‘ flat I started thinking about how the Croydon-born model always manages to look chic and stylish is shabby rock-y vintage while Hince looks a little raggedy.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure the sight of me on a Sunday morning in pjs scuttling to the newsie is far, far worse but the point I’m trying to make is that women are armed with an array of stylistic tools. Mixing mussed up hair with a fancy dress, or shabby jeans with a flashy jewellery has long been Moss’ preserve. When a man dresses scruffy he isn’t in possession of as much to work with to make those well-worn basics look smart, by replacing the well-worn suede boots with a pair of new shoes or the Britpop-era jacket with a duffel coat Hince could have gone from scuzzy to artfully skewhiff.

Kanye watch update!

By Jonathan Smith on November 28th, 2008

kanyehead.jpg

At the start of the week we saw Kanye wearing a piece of his own clothing line Pastelle, we can now inform you that Pastelle will be released to us normal people this coming January. “Hurrah!” Kanye fans cheer, I sigh in disbelief. I sigh further because we are not done with the College Drop Out’s assault on the fashion world as his signature Nike’s the Air Yeezy will be released in March. The Air Yeezy, a bastardisation of Air Jordan’s, Bapestars and pure evil from the mind of Mr West can be seen on the man himself, along with another Pastelle piece through the jump.

Keifer Sutherland on the Last EVER Issue of Men’s Vogue?

By Will Reid on November 27th, 2008

0997130.jpgUsually, I like to write these magazine posts with as much information and detail as possible. I’m no stranger to the old hour of uploading just to give you the full low-down on that Dazed & Confused issue with “Tecktonick”dancer Kevin. The US Vogue ‘Superman’ issue with Tom Welling was packed with great pictures that were up on our beloved Brandish within hours of their release!

However, sometimes a hot story is worth posting even if the only information you have is a cover image…

Fake tan poll: are you taking your cues from Valentino?

At the opening night party for the New York Ballet Valentino rocked up with SJP looking even more orange than he usually does. Having said that, a little fake tan mixed with moisturiser is my number one tip for instantly improving your appearance, it’s great for hangovers, lack of sleep or when you are ill.
Do you fake tan? Take the Brandish poll after the jump and let us know!

Brandish Inspiration: The Sartorialist Shoots Chanel Menswear in Fantastic Man 8

By Will Reid on November 26th, 2008

Chanel1Web.jpg

It’s that time of year when men and women of every age are all forgetting about work and turning their thoughts to something much more important- Christmas presents. I’m not talking about gifts for the slightly odd uncle or some flowers for that 80-year old neighbour who suddenly said ‘hello’ yesterday even though you heard she had died two months ago (just me?) I mean a Chanel Menswear tweed coat.

The great Karl Lagerfeld is no idiot when it comes to the gift-giving season and for the eighth issue of Fantastic Man, he has asked Scott Schuman (The Sartorialist) to shoot the latest collection of elusive Chanel menswear for an article written by Charlie Porter. Wow.

Chace Crawford Shows His (Lack of) Fashion Colours!

By Will Reid on November 26th, 2008

Only a few months ago, we told you of how Mario Testino had let it slip that Chace Crawford was to get the cover of VMAN. Since then, Chace has got his cover (although the Brandish team weren’t overly enthusiastic) and a whole new series of Gossip Girl has begun.

In this video, the Grazia Team give Chace their ‘Grazia Guy Fashion Quiz’ and the results are disastrous! I might work in fashion but I’m sure most Brandish readers could score better. What do you think?

Watch the video and then e-mail us to tell us how you do!
