Brandish’s Fashion Word of The Day…Crarem

By Will Reid on June 30th, 2008

crarem.jpgFor those of you wondering where I have disappeared off to recently- the answer is a strange place called Abernethy in Northern Scotland where innocent people are made to compete in equally strange outdoor activities. And not the X-rated kind.

While some have been living it up at Fashion Week, I have been condemned to a lack of ghost models and Matches sales. Therefore, I was delighted to return to Isabelle’s latest fashion accessory- the ‘Medge.’ I have come up with a new fashion word of my own.

I have decided upon the Crarem Trouser’ as my new term. As seen at John Galliano and Etro, this trouser mixes the Harem-style ankle with the new ‘Drop-Crotch’ trend to form the trouser of the season.

Rykiel Homme grey jeans

By admin on June 20th, 2008

rykieljeans.jpgSeeing as Rykiel Homme is closing down, their clothes will make the transition from good piece to collector’s item. Before that transition is made, a lot of it goes on sale. This brings us to these Rykiel Homme jeans.

These jeans look like a toned down version of those radioactive Dior Homme jeans that Kanye West put up on his blog a while back. The muted colouring is still sharp enough to stand out from other jeans and they’re also about £200 cheaper than the Dior version. You can get these from the corner for £84.

Justice x Surface to Air collection online

By admin on June 19th, 2008

s2ajustix.jpgRemember the linkup Justice annouced with Surface to Air a couple of months ago? Well the fruits of their labour have just gone up on the S2A online store.

It looks like the leather jackets have had a few modifications since the teaser pics we saw in April, with Xavier de Rosnay’s effort getting a full makeover. The grey leather with black and orange highlights has been ditched in favour of standard black with navy blue cuffs and zips and a deep red pocket lining.

On first look they’re pretty impressive pieces – enough to placate those who argue these sort of collaborations often breed more hype than quality. It’ll be interesting to see if anything more comes out of the ‘Justice For All’ line. Jackets £620 each, jeans £117. Thanks to We Are The Market for the heads up. Pics after the jump.

Dries Van Noten pink and red boxing shorts

By admin on June 4th, 2008

dries van noten boxer boxing shorts.jpgPink and red is one of my favourite colour combinations, it’s perhaps not the most classically stylish colour combination but the pairing of masculine red and feminine pink makes for a satisfying clash.

Now we come onto the fact that the item in question is a pair of Dries Van Noten silky boxing shorts (£205) and it becomes a little harder to wear. We’ve already written about pyjamas as outerwear so this could conceivably be the next step but to be perfectly honest I at a bit of a loss as to how you’d wear them… Any ideas?

Brandish Poll: High-Waisted Jeans

By Will Reid on May 20th, 2008

topman.jpgWhat a surreal start to the week; trawling Topman for a Monday Morning boost, I was hoping for a few print t-shirts but instead discovered the horror of the new ‘Premium High Waist Slim Jeans.‘ Yes, that’s right; after drop-crotch and MC Hammer (I don’t actually want to touch this) denim, we are being given the chance to try out the latest jean trend. The high waist has failed to get women on side à la skinny jeans simply because they are impossible to wear. In indigo, 100% cotton and selling for £45, I am left wondering if it is really worth the risk. What do you think?

See our poll after the jump!

River Island chambray shorts

By admin on May 20th, 2008

river island chambray shorts.jpgWhen even River Island is doing short shorts you know a trend has hit the mainstream. They’re a wallet-pleasing £21 which is the right price for trying something out. The smart tailoring elevates the shorts above beachwear but the chambray fabric stops it from looking too contrived.

Onto the all-important matter of length, thankfully these shorts aren’t as minimal as the ones Facehunter snapped in our poll last week. They’re a rather more decent just above the knee meaning you could get away with wearing them in the office…Give it a go!

Dance sequence from Humse Hai Muqabala shows how to wear double pleat trousers

By admin on May 19th, 2008

You might be forgiven for thinking that my reasons for putting this video up are slightly self-indulgent, but you’d be wrong. Of course it’s an amazing video -featuring Prabhudeva who is apparently one of the best dancers, but if you pay attention to the main male characters’ lower half you’ll notice they are wearing some rather fetching double pleat trousers.
I’ve seen quite a few people carry off voluminous pleated trousers, but honestly, if you want a guide on how to look good in your neo-baggies then take a tip from these guys.

APC denim bermuda shorts

By admin on May 15th, 2008

apcshorts.jpgWith the sun finally coming out, the short shorts debate looks set to continue. I’m not a fan of short shorts, but I despise three quarter lengths and cargo shorts even more. My ideal shorts would be a dark colour, well fitted and stopping just above the kneecap. APC – whose madras range we’ve featured before – have a pair of denim Bermuda shorts that tick all those boxes.

With most stores obsessed with tailored trouser shorts or stonewash cargo denim, it’s refreshing to find something that keeps it clean and simple. If you’re lucky enough to be a usual medium, small or extra small size, then you can order these from the APC website. Oversized freaks like me will have to venture to Selfridges.

Poll: Do you like short shorts?

By admin on May 14th, 2008

short shorts facehunter style salvage.jpgShorts shorts disappeared off the radar for a bit at Brandish but the sun has come out, the Sartorialist is obsessing over cuffing and at Style Salvage they’re getting all heated over the guy on the left, so they’re back on our minds.

Bang on time for Wednesday here comes a poll for you to add your tuppence worth, let us know what you think of short shorts after the jump.

Fit – The most important factor in clothing

By admin on May 14th, 2008

bigshirt.jpgYou know when you want to say something and someone else describes more eloquently than you ever could? That’s how I feel about Simon Crompton’s article on how fit is the most important factor in men’s style. If you haven’t read it for whatever reason, basically it states that too many male fashion followers put too much importance on brands and not enough on fit and design.

Having seen pictures on a fashion forum of someone squeezing their thighs into a pair of Nudie Thin Finns that were too short, this point can’t be overstated. It’s easy to get drawn to wearing a brand because of their prestige, but if you look like your borrowing clothes from somebody else it’s best to leave it on the shelf.

Fila Gold check shorts

By admin on May 7th, 2008

checkshorts.JPGThe plaid on plaid trend is still for the fashion forward few so it hasn’t had many takers yet. Due to the difficulty in pulling this off, it’s unlikely that the trend will ever take off like V-neck jumpers did. With that said, there are still some great check items to be found, like these Fila Gold check shorts (£45).

Woody Allen once said ‘Can you imagine the level of a mind that watches wrestling?’ That’s how I feel about cargo shorts – which despite the fact their awfulness, still continue to popular. Separate yourself from the cargo short wearing herd by wearing some shorts that don’t make you look like a soldier who decided to cut his gear for summer.

Hammer pants 2008 style?

By admin on May 6th, 2008

baggytight.jpgApparently, these jeans aren’t a joke. I’m tempted to think that this may be a PR stunt. No one could actually think that these look good. Seeing as they’re being sold at Karmaloop (although it states that it’s out of stock whenever you try to look at them) Soulful Commandoe clearly did.

To call these carrot top jeans – as the company who make them do – would be a gross understatement. They look like two completely different pairs of jeans cut in half and sewn together. I think we have the 80′s trend to thank for this. Having raided everything worth wearing from that decade, people have resorted to denim Hammer pants.

Acne X Lanvin Denim

By admin on May 1st, 2008

Lanvin clearly like what Acne did with Fantastic Man, as they’ve decided to start making denim with the Swedish company. Acne’s previous collaborations bode well for this upcoming one, as the Gentleman’s jean were a great addition and should have been more widely available.

The good news about this is that these two companies almost can’t fail to make something great. The bad news is that it looks likely to be a women’s only line, judging from Alber Elbaz’s comments. It may just have been that FWD didn’t ask about the possibility of a menswear line, so we can still hope. It’s set for a 2009 launch.

Customise your Denim with Ande Whall

By admin on April 22nd, 2008

andewhall.jpgIf you have tree trunk thighs or long legs then you’ll find it hard to find jeans that fit exactly the way you want them to. Things would all be so much easier if someone would customise your jeans for you before you bought them. But who would do such a thing? If this were a TV show, at this point ‘one man denim workshop’ Ande Whall would burst through a wall and say an unfunny line. But it isn’t so I’ll just have to link to his site.

Working off 6 templates, Ande Whall makes made-to-measure jeans from scratch. They have lengths of up to 38″ – and as a possessor of long legs, hearing that is enough to make me drool onto my keyboard – and customise the jeans according to your wishes. In a world of mass production, as shown by Richard’s post earlier today, it’s heartening to know that your jeans are made lovingly made by one person from start to finish. For custom made denim the prices are great value, starting at just £75. Sure you could get some people’s market jeans for £40 but why not spend a little bit more and get jeans designed just for you?

From sweatshop to runway: a denim photo essay

By admin on April 21st, 2008

jeans_essay.jpgTime magazine have produced an amazing series of photographs on the journey of a pair of jeans, from production in Chinese and Sri Lankan factories to runways and shops. Workers churn out 10,000 pairs a day, hand-distressing and sewing denim.

The photo essay also gives us a behind-the-scenes look at American denim production with LA brands Bread Denim and All American Wash.
