Acne Jeans – Why settle for less?

By admin on April 17th, 2008

acnejeans.jpgWhy do people put such a low price limit when jeans shopping? Don’t give me the price nonsense either. If you spend £50 on jeans which develop holes after 3 months, then you’ll need to replace them. Do this 3 or 4 times a year and you’ll spend £150-200 on the same awful pair of jeans. So why not save that money up and get these Acne Jeans?

Sure, at £177 you could get cheaper jeans but why put yourself through that ordeal? It would be the equivalent of watching Lead Balloon instead of Curb Your Enthusiasm. The Bill instead of The Wire. Dane Cook instead of Bill Hicks. Taxi Driver instead of….you get my drift. It would be a bad choice.

Denim on Denim – It can be done

By admin on April 15th, 2008

levisjacket.jpg

For eons, I’ve had the denim on denim look as the sole preserve of builders and creepy men in clubs. But seeing this picture at the Sartorialist has changed my mind for good. Although it’s best left for the colder months, the look can be recreated with this LVC 1936 type 1 Jacket.

The problem with most Denim on Denim looks is that the jacket is usually ill-fitting. With the cinchback design, it’s possible to create a strong V-line, which is what sets off the jacket in the picture. The other major problem I had with this look was that the denim didn’t match. As this is a navy blue, it should easily match at least one pair of jeans in your closet. The jacket costs £125 and is available from Cultizm.com.

Dolce & Gabbana grey Jeans/trousers – Jousers?

By admin on April 11th, 2008

dior grey jeans.jpgFor some weird reason, Grey jeans are still hard to come by. That’s what makes these Dolce & Gabbana light jeans a god/allah/thereisnogod-send. While I love trousers, they can be slightly too flimsy for my tastes.

Navy jeans are better than black jeans in spring, but they also bleed onto the trainer. The bleeding is incredibly annoying when you’ve just bought a brand new pair of white hi-tops and don’t want a stain on them – only to find there’s a blue outline around the heel of the trainer that you can’t seem to scrub off, so you spend ages cleaning them with an old toothbrush and some Cillit Bang. Not that I did any of this.

But I digress. At £270 these are pretty steep, but its best you look at it as an investment that can be worn during all seasons for all occasions. Or just treat yourself and feel slightly guilty afterwards.

Surface To Air et Justice pour tous

By admin on April 11th, 2008

justicebiker.jpgElectro darlings Justice have announced a collaborative effort with fellow Parisians Surface To Air, for their new clothing line ‘Justice for All’.

Clearly heavily influenced by Xavier de Ronay’s leather jacket fetish, 3 have been designed in a 150 piece run (including a rather nice biker jacket, fuelling the resurgence) along with 2 pairs of jeans.

The limited edition range is set for release at stores in Paris and Brazil, including Surface To Air (obviously), Barneys and Colette. More pictures after the jump.

Acne collaborate with Fantastic Man for their ‘Gentleman’s Jeans’

By admin on April 10th, 2008

fantastic man acne jean gentleman's gert jonkers.jpg
The Dutch duo behind the beloved Fantastic Man magazine have teamed up with Acne to produce the ‘Gentleman’s Jeans’, a pair of slightly tapered slim-ish fitting dark denim jeans. The Fantastic Man editors Gert Jonkers & Jop van Bennekom describe it thus:
“It’s reminiscent of a style that we’d see on our fathers and uncles — the dreaded pleated denim chino — but then updated and made wonderful for today and for ourselves.”

Taking the origins of jeans as workwear as a starting point Acne have adapted the classic trousers for the modern man, and they suit formal wear as much as a casual look. They are available from Acne’s online store for £170.

Uniqlo’s Vintage Chinos

By admin on April 9th, 2008

uniqlochinos copy.jpg

Chinos are the perfect mix of jean and trouser, but it was excruciatingly difficult to get hold of great fitting chino’s as they’re still a rather American item. This all changed with Uniqlo’s Vintage flat front chinos. Whilst the price point is usually the selling point with Uniqlo – and at £25, it’s a great price – the detailing is what makes this piece stand out.

From the metal button to the deep herringbone pattern inside the pockets, it’s clear that Uniqlo have thought about how to make a great piece rather than how to make a cheap one. You can buy these from Uniqlo’s site for £24.99

Shorts and trousers from Full Circle

By admin on April 8th, 2008

full circle shorts trousers.JPG
Spring Summer ranges are in and Full Circle have got some great basic trousers and shorts. The linen shorts are perfect for anyone who tentatively wants to take the plunge with shorts as they are smart but not over-tailored; they also come in a wine colour and mink. The traditional cut straight-leg trousers are a useful everyday smart piece and the skinnier cut is a great choice for the more fashion-forward. Prices after the jump.

Trousers trends multiply, so take your pick!

By admin on April 4th, 2008

S/S trends from left: Martin Margiela, Alexander McQueen, Prada, Burberry Prorsum.

Trouser styles have been skinny for a long time, but mirroring womenswear trends the fashion-forward kecks seen on a trendy young man could just as easily be voluminous double-pleated, geek chic cropped, wide-leg, bootcut or dropped-crotch.

In a recent article in GQ style Charlie Porter waxes lyrical about the return of bootcut featured in Prada’s S/S show in a Italo-geek style. I don’t know if I’m ready for bootcut yet, but it took me a while to acclimatise to the return of pleats when Fantastic Man did a feature on them about a year ago. See after the jump to take our trouser trends poll.

You Would If You Could: Denim Like Dean

By Will Reid on April 3rd, 2008

jamesdeandenim.JPGPoor Daniel Bedingfield- he crooned about his ability to be James Dean and next thing he knew he was blown out of the entertainment water by his own sister.

One thing that you will often hear fashionistos refer to is the latest ‘future classic.’ I have a problem with this term because despite its easy applicability I believe it is impossible to predict what will become a classic, an icon, a materialistic pleasure that will go on to represent an entire generation. James Dean filled this gap and from the word rebel he was the epitome of youthful cool, pulling denim off with tremendous aplomb.

Topman Tailored Shorts

By admin on March 31st, 2008

topmanshorts.jpg

Although we do enjoy talking about short shorts, there are alternatives.  If you, like 99.9% of the population, hate ¾ shorts but don’t want shorts that can be overlapped by your boxers, then these Topman
tailored shorts
could be the answer.

Now that the temperature is finally picking up, it may be time to start showing off your knees (although you should do some calf raises before hand, just for appearance sake). Topman’s tailored shorts sit slightly above the knee and are a happy medium for those who just want to dip their toes in the whole shorts trend. Being Topman, the price is an affordable £30.

Short shorts, the debate goes on…

By admin on March 26th, 2008

shortswham.jpgAs you may have noticed, Short shorts are a major topic of debate around Brandish. In fact, having failed to get my local MP to ask this at the House of Commons, I went to this week’s recording of Question Time. In between questions about the budget, I got up and yelled ‘but what about short shorts? Yay or Nay?’ I’ve got a funny feeling they won’t be airing that segment. It’s a shame really.

The whole short shorts debate has seen everything from Wham accusations to sly attacks on the colour purple (the actual colour, not the Oscar winning film). Reader Mark indirectly brought up the issue of people who are, shall we say, slightly larger than life wearing short shorts. That issue has been solved by the makers of skinny jeans – just don’t make them past a waist size of 36.

‘Man Alive’- Style Magazine, Sunday 16 March

By Will Reid on March 19th, 2008

Style When I opened Sunday Times Style’s latest male issue, I came upon a great editorial called ‘Man Alive.’ It focuses on shoes and suits but the contents are elevated by Lucy Ewing’s styling and Paul Bliss’ photography.

Among an issue containing Kate Moss semi-naked on a beach and Clive Owen in semi-shadow, it is testament to its brilliance that the editorial made the front cover of the magazine. Particular highlights included the ginger model leaping excitedly in the air. Clothing ranges from Giorgio Armani to Miu Miu and the models have been picked to represent different types of people.

Until it’s short shorts weather don a pair of Topman slacks

By Isabelle OCarroll on March 17th, 2008

topam grey narrow trews.JPGWhile we’re getting all hot under the collar about the short shorts debate (seriously, is there a more important current affairs topic?) the weather hasn’t quite caught up with us.

Clad your legs in a pair of slim fit trousers, the grey will look great should you decide to take the plunge and try one of this season’s trend colours like coral, sky blue or lemon yellow. Pick something like a belt or t-shirt and when it falls out of favour you can use the belt as a dog collar and the t-shirt as a duster. Fab. Topman’s grey slacks (£40) have got a nice slubby textured finish which will add interest to your outfit.

My Theory- The Future of Short Shorts

By Will Reid on March 17th, 2008

00340m_2
“You were on my mind at least nine tenths of yesterday, it seemed as if perhaps I’d gone insane. What is it about you that has commandeered my brain? Maybe it’s your…” Kimya Dawson’s brilliant lyrics ring through my head as I realise that it appears I have nothing better to do on a Saturday night than listen to the Juno soundtrack (heads up my friends, it’s great) and appear pensive and philosophical while typing away at my laptop. That is until you know what is causing me so much mental frustration- I am deciding upon my ‘theory’ (as named by Jason and furthered by Isabelle) regarding the devious short shorts trend.

Short shorts were a feature of last season’s shows and where better to take lead from than the trend-barometer that is the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection (right.) I was quite comfortably on the fence until I received a peculiar delivery from a well-intentioned but elderly great-uncle.
