Resort season is always a bit of a drag for me; overly-frivolous (yes I see the haute-couture irony) and just another season to get my head around, the jump from cashmere coats to cruise is always too much. Karl Lagerfeld’s show for Chanel was proving nauseatingly frilly and I would challenge any British man not to feel melancholic at the sight of a male model in pink tie-dye. That was until Brad Koenig swaggered down the runway wearing that Chanel jumper. You may think that referring to a item as that only three days after it made its debut might be slightly forward but it’s cashmere, a jumper, Chanel and now on Brandish’s WISHLIST. Need I say more?

You can’t guarantee much, but I can guarantee that cardigans aren’t at the top of your shopping list right now. Nevertheless, I think this 3.1 Phillip Lim cardigan will catch your eye even if you had no intentions of buying knitwear this season.
The design quirk in this piece is the white underlay and unique detailing. Although it’s subtle, it’s enough to separate you from the herd. Despite being knitwear, it’s surprisingly light and makes for a good piece to layer with. It’s available from Matches and costs £245.

Uniqlo call this cardigan red, I call it coral but that’s because I’m a fashion writer and I love mentioning that it’s one of the hottest colours this season.
Whatever the colour Uniqlo have reduced it to £9.99 which is an absolute bargain. I’ve got this cardigan in grey and I’ve worn it to death, picking it up off my chair even when a cursory sniff revealed more than a soupçon of eau de tramp. That’s how much I love Uniqlo cardigans.

If you shop like a man then you’ll be glad to know that this Energie cardigan has gone on sale. Purple hasn’t infiltrated the menswear market like it has the women’s but that’s all the more reason to get into it.
Now that Cardigans are worn by everyone, you’ll need a little something extra to separate yourself from the lads mag fans. The only problem with this cardi is that it is 40% acrylic. Apparently acrylic jumpers are used as a torture technique in the new series of 24. Jack Bauer makes victims wear an acrylic jumper without an undershirt and just waits for them to crack. It takes time, but they all crack.
But I digress. This cardigan is available for $59.99 from Revolve clothing.

While we’re waiting to crack out the summer garms one of the best ways to look a bit less wintry is to add a bit of colour to your outfit.
This cardigan from Burton is an unsual kind of tomatoey red because of the marl, but I like it. If I was writing on Catwalk Queen I might be tempted to say something like ‘it’s coral, this season’s new colour and is bang on trend’. But I wont. It’s only £25 and will make a great addition to your wardrobe and add a bit of a kick to any outfit.

Urban Outfitters have taken their sweet time getting their online store the same amount of brands as their physical store but they got there in the end. Now they have brands like D.I.E, Surface to Air, Filippa K and this J.Lindeberg jumper.
Whilst it does look slightly unremarkable in this picture, the blue colour they’ve used is a lot more vibrant than it appears in the picture. It’s an odd shade, somewhat between electric and navy blue and the piece stands out purely because it’s a shade you won’t have seen before. At £80, it’s only slightly more expensive than a Lyle & Scott tee and you won’t have to suffer the indignity of some pie eating slob wearing the same top as you.

Lately, it’s been easier than ever to recreate catwalk looks from vintage stores. Designers from Gareth Pugh to Henry Holland admit to garnering inspiration from the pieces available in vintage so why shouldn’t you? You won’t find a cardigan like this one in any high street store. Which, if you’re tired of disposable clothing, is a great thing.
While cardigans are disturbingly ubiquitous these days -with everyone from indie geeks to lager louts wearing them – this is something that will stand out from the crowd. It wouldn’t look out of place in Etro’s A/W 2008 collection and it’s only £45 (Although that’s still a little steep for something someone died in).

Why am I writing about thick knitwear when
spring is around the corner, I hear you all pre-emptively ask. The answer is
because it’s a great investment. As our departed Tim said, the
chunky knitwear trend is one that has legs. So why not invest in this Lukesville
jumper?
Cream is a hot colour right now, but it’s a
colour that’s unlikely to go out of fashion anytime soon. So you won’t feel
like you’re wearing one of those awful faddy colours. At £49 it’s pretty much
wholesale price, so you can’t really ask for more of a bargain. Well,
technically you could ask, but you wouldn’t get one.

The next look to make our list is the awkward length. This was a hard one to put into this feature as some do manage to pull it off but not everyone is Terence Koh and it only took a look at the local fashionisto’s crash and burn outfit of Kris van Assche-style combat with tight tee to know that this was one to be hastily put down.
So where did it all go wrong? When did the matronliness of Britain extend to Dolce & Gabbana jodhpurs and McQueen knits? At D&G, trousers were either tucked into boots or (sharp intake of breath) fitted with elasticated hems- yes, the same fabric responsible for the horrific Rocky Balboa-tracksuit/pantaloon ankle. McQueen went for his usual unwearable but exquisite fashions and approached this trend with a blend of Alpaca knit and Spanish embroidery. Some celebs have tried to wear this look but unless you are an artist/indie fashion editor/musician/girlfriend of Irina Lazareanu-type, it’s best to stay away. For those of you willing to take on the challenge and prove me wrong- take a look at this Rick Owens thigh-length top from Brown’s.

With the whole purple thing taking off pretty
slowly, now is a good a time as any to buy into it. They’re won’t be many people
wearing it and you’ll avoid Topman syndrome – as in you won’t leave the store
seeing six people wearing the same item you just bought. What more could you ask
for?
Not much, I hope. But we’re going to show
you an item that’s half price and purple just because we love you guys so much.
This Energie
cardigan is ahead of trend for the princely sum of $59. The only downside
is that it’s 40% acrylic. 40% isn’t Topman standards, but it’s still 40% too
much acrylic. If you can get past that, then you can get this cardigan from

In the double breasting stakes, cardigans
lag well behind coats and even hoodies. Most double breasted cardigans look
like someone decided to add another set of buttons after they’d finished making
it. J.Lindeberg have avoided this with their low cut double
breasted cardigan.
The best thing about this cardigan, apart
from the double breasting, is the dark red colour. Although we love purple, it’s
nice to see something different. Also, the dark red lends itself to being matched
with either pastels or dark navys and blacks. You’ll have to hurry to get this
though – there’s only one left in Large.

About a week ago, my colleague Jason posted on a pair of pretty cool purple trainers. Continuing on the trend of purple items (remember what I said about us inheriting last’s season’s woman trends?) I bring you this Shag Fleece Hoody from American Apparel.
It is zip-up and light enough to wear during the summer and thin enough to layer with other items during the colder months- British summer included. It is unisex and therefore more fitted which for some is a devil in disguise. It has a kangaroo pocket and ribbed waistband and cuffs. The shag is on the outside which may sound cheap but trust me is better than the knit-rag effect of having it anywhere else. Available in brown, mustard, blue and soon black, it is little wonder that this is one of the brand’s highest rated items.

The sun is finally here. The heat, however,
isn’t. This leaves everyone in that familiar
‘too hot for a thick jumper/too cold for just a t-shirt’ scenario. The solution
to this would be a light jacket layered with a thin jumper, like this pima
cotton v-neck.
This jumper is thin without being
see-through (unlike those awful All Saints versions of this design), and you
can always roll it up – which is the main trend this summer, for tops and
trousers – when the weather gets a little hot. This top is available in the
Ralph Lauren online store for $97.50. They don’t ship to the UK though, so you
may have to visit your local boutique.

There’s never been a better time to get
high end clothing. With all the high street stores being raided on the first
few days of their sales, high end stores don’t sell nearly as much. Around this
time, most stores are forced to sell their clothes at the price they got them
for. Which why Matches are selling this Marc
Jacobs cable knit cardigan for the relatively low price of £175.
I know it’s still nearly £200 but it is a
Marc Jacobs piece. And it’s 100% virgin wool. Virgin wool is a misleading title
as most wool these days is technically of the virgin kind. I personally think
they just called it that to arouse men who are fans of cardigans and bestiality.

Is it just me or are we seeing a crossover of trends between the worlds of guy and girl’s fashion?
An example are the India-inspired outfits at Armani Privé Spring/Summer
2007 that found their way into Rei Kawakubo’s menswear collection for
Autumn/Winter via style icon Andrew Logan (as pointed out by Brandish’s
own Tim Hunter).For this season, we saw velvet shirts at Dries Van
Noten not unlike those at Christopher Kane Spring/Summer 2008 and the
flowers on lapels at the Lanvin Menswear show could be seen as an
incredibly subtle interpretation of last season’s (female) trend for
floral prints.
