Headphones are essential to life in London. How else can you survive bus journeys wedged in beside heavy breathing Giant Haystacks or avoid the life history of the mobile phone pest behind you?
Now your headphones can match not only your outfit but also that glorious podcast you’re listening to now that music is essentially free. I’m loving these nautical themed blue headphones (a collaboration between Brooklyn scenester Amy Gunther and artist Dennis Mcnett) by WESC who seem to have cornered the market in cute Fisher-Price looking headphones.

In these times of global megabrands and identikit shopping experiences, it’s refreshing to discover a site like Manufactum. Featuring a quirky mix of unique, traditionally-made items from gloves and wallets to toiletries and household items, it’s a site that’s easy to get lost in. A bit like wandering around an undiscovered department store from another era, Manufactum specialises in original, often hand-made products which make perfect gifts. A few favourites from the huge range available: braided leather belts, classic striped matelot tops, silk stripe pyjamas and this gorgeously-packaged Klar’s curd soap. A rare pleasure.

Everyone is guilty of it, (well not everyone, I have a colour-coded Google Docs spreadsheet, natch!) but last-minute Christmas shopping can often leave you with gifts that have an air of desperation about them.
These picks have something for every wallet and they all carry an air of “What this? I bought this in November” insouciance. The Habitat lamp is a tasteful nudge for every Ikea junkie, and the watch will help the wearer get the ‘Sexy Cab Driver’ look which is going to be very important in ’09. A ‘To Do’ tattoo list is useful when compiling all those New Year’s resolutions, and all the more useful because they’re temporary. Resolution, what resolution?!

I’ve always been of the opinion that my shoes lack the neon effect of a porn shop window, which is why I nearly shit a brick when I saw this video. These light up neon laces are the focus point of a pair of Solebox x Puma collaborative sneakers, which will hopefully be released soon- perhaps coming a little late for New Rave however there are probably a few hangers on out there, after all American Apparel is still doing business…

“Bored of perfectly folded paper and exquisitely tied ribbon? Fancy adding a more ‘personal’ touch this year? Then why not have your Christmas presents CrapWrapped™ at Firebox. This exclusive, uniquely shoddy gift wrapping option involves us wrapping your pressies in a slapdash fashion. “
The Daily Mail reports that Firebox.com is paying “20 of its male forklift truck drivers and warehouse assistants to wrap presents as quickly as possible, using ugly brown duct tape and very little care” for their latest ‘CrapWrap’ service. The service has proved popular with over 500 Firebox customers after only a week of its launch but what do you think?
Is it a bit stereotypical to say that all men are bad at wrapping or do you agree with Geraldine James, buying manager for Christmas gifts at Selfridges, who states that “men are perfectly capable of wrapping presents beautifully. They choose to pretend they can’t so they don’t have to do it.”
Vote ‘Yay or Nay’ to the service after the jump!

Aspirational present ideas for your friends and loved ones, there is nothing more luxe than carrying a nifty china version of a disposable coffee cup and it’s eco-friendly to boot. A bow tie spruces up a simple shirt no end and the Topman Fairisle scarf is a lot cheaper than it looks. Dressing gowns make rubbish presents unless they are amazing quality like this black one which will make the wearer feel like they’re in a hotel even if they’re just watching Fern and Phillip in their pants.
The Eugenia Kim hat combines the trendiness and warmth of a trapper hat with the timelessness of dogtooth and I don’t need to tell you why Opening Ceremony‘s patent desert boots are amazing.

AskMen.com has recently proved to be a good source of interesting and insightful fashion features (at least once you’ve clicked through such literary gems as “Is a 3-some really worth it?” and an “Is Britney actually Hot?” poll.) A look at their Fashion section resulted in me reading a great article by P.A Parfond, the site’s weekly fashion correspondent, entitled “Shaving Tips From Moroccan Street Shavers.”
The feature is a look at the tips of three different barbers from within Morocco and Parfond reveals that the reason Moroccan barbers are the best shaver in the world is because “Moroccan street shavers hold the secrets to the perfect shave, no matter who the recipient…for them, shaving is an ancient art, one bound by rules and techniques that men growing up in the West are rarely introduced to.”
Check out the different tips by following this link.

Men.Style is great for tongue-in-cheek features and their ‘Ultimate Party Guide’ is not only perfectly-timed but a great read and (just to add some sense of validity to this post,) a good laugh. The feature aims to make you “a legendary host” and the site has got a few of America’s most refined movers ‘n’ shakers on-board to add their two pence to the Christmas-party-nightmare cup.
If you are planning to throw a party and you’re hoping it lives up to the obviously high-expectations of those who actually enjoy Christmas (which I’m sure is all Brandish readers!) then you have to read the full run-down of the guide after the jump!

This isn’t particularly fashion-related but nevertheless I think it deserves a mention on Brandish. It’s a piece by Canadian artist Michel de Broin made from old batteries.
Called Dead Star it’s a clever use of old materials and exemplifies Broin’s investigations into technology and the realm of ideas. The piece is a beautiful reminder of the amount of waste generated by humans but my favourite part is the link between dying stars and finite energy, needless to say I want one!

A fantastically over-the-top and outrageously extravagant magazine issue seems to be à la mode for the brand anniversaries of today. Lacoste reworked Visionaire for their 75th Anniversary and now Esquire, the mens lifestyle magazine, is celebrating their 75th (coincidence?) with the World’s first ‘Digital Cover.’ In Brandish speak: a cover that actually moves!
There will only be 100,000 copies of this issue and when it appears on newsstands come September, it will boast that “the 21st Century Begins Now!” The New York Times reports that the issue will come with an attached battery pack.
Who will get the cover- an undoubtedly huge boost for any career!

If you still can’t get enough of Marty McFly, you can own the genuine hoverboard that was used in the film. Owning a piece of Hollywood memorabilia is always a pricy affair and this is no different, with the ebay auction currently at $30,000.
There’s also the question of what to do with it if you did win it. Do you frame it? Try to use it? Or just hold it close to your chest whilst watching the film on repeat? Choose what you’d do with it in the poll after the jump.

Fashionista has been sent a pic of one reader’s wardrobe (above)- her shoeboxes are transparent, her clothes are colour-coordinated, everything is obsessively neat and you can only imagine she has an itsy-bit too much time on her hands. Brandish Editor Isabelle has opened up her wardrobe for a new Catwalk Queen feature and it’s certainly isn’t that meticulous!
So, while my wardrobe is most definitely not as organised as the Fashionista reader (I keep all my clothes in drawers and after too long away from home have a habit of living out of a suitcase,) we at Brandish want to know how tidy your wardrobe/closet/clothes space is?
Tell us in the poll below!

Last week’s diet poll obviously hit home for a lot of you- but in a way that I had not expected. I confess to being a guy who is conscious of my weight and I have dieted. I see nothing wrong with wanting to fit into a pair of skinny jeans but thought I was of a minority. However, that appears not to be the case; 57% of you voted that there was nothing wrong with watching your weight and had therefore dieted.
I know that most of you are unlikely to be suffering from an eating disorder but it appears that ‘Manorexia’ is no longer a fad-word put out by editors trying to fill pages of a cheap magazine but a reality edging it’s way into pop culture.

As Beckham’s ‘people’ deny he’s been at all enhanced in the Armani pants department and Matt McConaughey is seen in D&G ads being hounded for his bod, it occurs to me that more than ever we men are striving for physical perfection.
More and more I am left sulking at lunch as male friends tell me they are banned from certain foods and no, before you ask, they’re not all gay. Or vain.
So, are you in with this phenomenon? Have you ever dieted or are you more of an iron-pumper?
Tell us in the poll below.
