Matt Smith, a 26-year old actor and relative unknown, has been made the new Doctor Who and if not for anything else, he will be known as the youngest ever Doctor. Smith has appeared in theatre productions ‘That Face’ and ‘Swimming with Sharks.’ Smith is creating considerable drama with his appointment as The Doctor and my favourite (albeit unreliable) Daily Mail is reporting suspicions of a betting-related scandal.
With his thin frame, gauche mannerisms and androgynous looks, I think we have a potential style idol on our hands. What do you think? Tell us on our Facebook wall.
I love it when a good fashion mystery gets solved, and last week Style Salvage unearthed the names of the two siblings we featured recently on Love the Look.
They’re called Dee and Ricky and they make the cute Lego heart badges snapped by the Sartorialist and sported by Kanye West. They come in classic red, multi or for the dead inside, black. It’s too late for Christmas but they would make a perfectly non-soppy Valentine’s gift, or even better a post-Christmas treat for yourself should Santa’s haul prove to be disappointing.
The Mighty Boosh have lost a little of their quirky homespun charm now that they’re living up to their Rock n’ Roll onstage personas, but they can still pack a venue with adoring fans.
Their gig at the O2 arena in London yesterday was a sellout, Noel Fielding had as many costume changes as Katy Perry at the MTV EMAs, including the ones pictured above but the highlight was probably a bizarre old lady outfit teamed with gold boots! I doubt that any of Fielding’s costumes would translate to real life, but as the comedian once said himself “you can never be unhappy in a poncho”, so maybe give it a go during the low points of the Christmas break?
Brand hyping is usually dull PR fluff but at a Kickers presentation yesterday I learnt some Very Interesting Things I Didn’t Know Before. Here they are:
It was started in France in ’68 (which has special significance) by Daniel Raufast who wanted something for hippies to wear on their feet.
Famous Kickers wearers include David Bowie, Buzzcocks and Ian Brown. The shoes enjoyed a renaissance in the late ’80s on the casuals scene -which I’d put money on making a return very soon btw.
Jarvis Cocker wore Kickers so much the company made him a special pair which were dubbed ‘Cockers’.
The company installed a shed around UK festivals where you show off your moves and ended up in an amazing stop-frame vid made by Lovebite, aka Nottingham duo Nick Cobby and Allan Buxton, soundtracked by a nice little CSS remix of Chromeo‘s Fancy Footwork. Phew! If you’re not intrigued after that little intro then you’re dead, the video after the jump.
Over on Catwalk Queen we managed to get an interview with Greta Pawlowski, who works at established UK label Aquascutum as their Company Archivist. Read on to find out how she got her position, what trends she predicts will be big and advice for getting into archiving.
Roisin Murphy‘s fave designer Gareth Pugh has announced he is designing his first menswear collection. The closest he got to menswear previously was designing a Christmas tree for Topman‘s flagship store but come January the British designer his debut collection to Paris.
Pugh (pictured here with Erin O’Connor) said: “It just feels like an organic progression and yes, I am going to be very busy working over Christmas!” The show will take place on the 25th Jan at the Palais de Tokyo.
Grazia recently reported that Henry Holland has 662 friends on Facebook. However, upon closer inspection (and my quest to see if old Henners has uploaded his pic with our Catwalk Queen editor Gemma,) I found that there are two Henry Hollands on Facebook. And neither has 662 friends.
One of the Henries has 403 friends and the other has 582- how intriguing! Worst of all?- neither has Agyness Deyn as a Facebook mate. The Brandish team does love a fashion mystery!
I’ve always been of the opinion that my shoes lack the neon effect of a porn shop window, which is why I nearly shit a brick when I saw this video. These light up neon laces are the focus point of a pair of Solebox x Puma collaborative sneakers, which will hopefully be released soon- perhaps coming a little late for New Rave however there are probably a few hangers on out there, after all American Apparel is still doing business…
For their January issue, Dazed & Confused asked the youth of Britain to design a Dazed magazine cover based on a set of images Hedi Slimanephotographed for the magazine. The issue came out last Thursday and the two black and white covers that were selected for the final copy (pictured after the jump) are very effective but, in my opinion, the image above (by ‘Jamie’) would have made a real statement and epitomised the revolutionary way of British youth today.
French label APC is racking up a second collaboration with Nike, to produce a new version of their All Court from 1975. APC founder and designer Jean Touitou said “We had a longing to make an elegant and simple sports shoe.” Toitou also added that he thought Nike should never have ceased production of the simple tennis shoe, and the French company will be bringing them back in Gallic red, white or blue.
You’ll be able to get the shoes from APC stores from this spring
Fashionista is stating that Katie Grand’s new LOVE magazine (published by Condé Nast,) is a “beacon of hope for the dying magazine industry and its dwindling fashion counterpart.” Well, it may be a beacon of hope for the magazine industry but Grand and her brilliant team have decided to get a head start with a very low-key blog.
The masthead of the magazine was revealed today and a look through the blog revealed such gems as Giles Deacon posing with a pair of Scotch-Egg-Glasses (the ‘it’ accessory of next season?) and fashion editors Francesca Burns and Victoria Young with the likes of Simon Cowelland David Walliams! Who would have guessed that Mark Frith (of Heat and celeb scandal fame,) would be editorial consultant?
Enjoy all the behind-the-scenes pictures as well as the full masthead after the jump!
Despite his Irish genes Eoghan Quigg manages not to make any Boyzone-style disasters in his shirt and waistcoat combo. The dove grey and black is a subtle move while the black buttons provide a nice focal point for the young chap and I wish him all the best in his musical and sartorial endeavours.
There’s just one thing… I can’t ignore the hair. It looks like 2 months-worth of Dax red wax has come to roost on his head by way of some frisky seagulls. He’ll grow out of it.
I don’t want to compete for vintage dresses, old suits and heels with anyone but dear Brandish readers come close and let me tell you about one of the most exciting events I’ve heard of in a very long time.
Angel‘s, the London costumier, is hosting the Big Vintage Sale in its Wembley storeroom this Saturday where you can rummage for ex-Angels stock and ex-BBC Resources Costume stock. Clothes hoarder that I am, I’ve spoken to people at the BBC about their costume department and apparently they hardly ever sell of their stock, so this really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Watch the video above to get an idea of the scale of the event, and see you at 8.30am on Saturday!
Yesterday we saw Jamie Hince donning a rather hobo-chic look and today we hear that Tony Simm, a Gordon Ramsay lookalike (emm…not quite,) has come forward to tell the world of how he is being verbally attacked as a result of the famous TV Chef’s supposed-affair.
Simm, aged 50, tells the Daily Mail that “everyone used to like him, and being his double meant I’d get lots of good attention everytime I left the house. But since the news of him and his alleged mistress hit the headlines, I’ve been called a love cheat by about 50 angry women of all ages.”
Simm also states that “it’s great that people are confusing me with the real deal, but I must admit I’m not totally happy about the fallout this has created.” Well, I guess that’s another reason to not give up the day job.
Looking at this image of Jamie Hince stepping after a night at girlfriend Kate Moss‘ flat I started thinking about how the Croydon-born model always manages to look chic and stylish is shabby rock-y vintage while Hince looks a little raggedy.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure the sight of me on a Sunday morning in pjs scuttling to the newsie is far, far worse but the point I’m trying to make is that women are armed with an array of stylistic tools. Mixing mussed up hair with a fancy dress, or shabby jeans with a flashy jewellery has long been Moss’ preserve. When a man dresses scruffy he isn’t in possession of as much to work with to make those well-worn basics look smart, by replacing the well-worn suede boots with a pair of new shoes or the Britpop-era jacket with a duffel coat Hince could have gone from scuzzy to artfully skewhiff.
