James Franco puts on a serious face for Gucci

By admin on August 20th, 2008

After Ewan McGregor for Davidoff and Justin Timberlake for Givenchy James Franco joins the latest ranks of celebs advertising male scents.
It’s ve-ery slick and deadpan, the black & white cinematography and deep voiceover are a million miles away from Franco’s early beginnings on Freaks and Geeks. The track is a Brian Ferry cover of Slave to Love done by the uber fashionista Roisin Murphy.

Hadley Freeman says enough to high fashion on the high street

By admin on August 19th, 2008

comme des garcons hm pictures.jpgRare are the occasions when I disagree with Hadley Freeman, there was a bit of fuss about bright opaque tights when her book came out but on the whole she’s a good ‘un.
Today in Guardian though Hadders was less than enthusiastic about the Comme des Garçons collection for H&M saying: “while Comme’s granddad styles might look like the apogee of chic when done with the highest quality of fabrics and sold in the snootiest of department stores, the budget versions, one suspects, will have a different look.”

Ok so the hammer pants may not become one of the bestsellers but the menswear is actually pretty good. We featured pictures yesterday and I think this will be one designer collection the men can actually get their teeth into, for once.

Maxïmo Park’s Paul Smith at Edinburgh’s Edge Fest

By admin on August 19th, 2008

paul smith maximo park edge fest edinburgh.jpgMaxïmo Park frontman Paul Smith strikes a characteristically kooky pose onstage at Edge Fest in Edinburgh. Smith is looking dapper as always with his trademark hat, an eccentric button-down shirt and cracking chequered suit.

The gig took place at the Corn Exchange slap bang in the middle of awful line-up which included Scouting for Girls and Newton Faulkner, *shudder*.

Hipsters are dead, long live hipsters?

By admin on August 18th, 2008

hipster scenester american apparel.jpgThe Independent are talking about global hipsters and the dissolution of traditional trends, name-dropping the usual suspects like Ryan McGinley and Nathan Barley. They call the Truman Brewery “a microcosm of an international phenomenon” which is kind of depressing but overall it’s an interesting article, describing the change in trend adoption from a vertical or trickle down movement to a lateral one largely thanks to the internet.

It’s a mostly upbeat article but it does slag off Uniqlo‘s pre-trendification era saying it was thought of as “a cheap and nasty Asian C&A equivalent” in 2004. Err, by whom?! Certainly not yours truly. Anyway if that’s all a little too fluffy read this Adbusters article on Hipsterism where Douglas Haddow calls it the ‘Dead End of Western Civilization’.

Comme des Garçons for H&M revealed

By admin on August 18th, 2008

Pictures of the forthcoming Comme des Garçons collection for H&M have been leaked to Fashionista and my intial verdict is thumbs up for the menswear. The women’s collection might be a little overly quirky (I’m reserving final opinion for when the range hits the shops) but the menswear is spot on, no pun intended. Rei Kawakubo has obviously retained CDG’s spirit in a surprisingly mainstream collection. From what I can see it’s a mix of quality tailoring with some well-placed, original flourishes like bias-cut fabrics and contrasting buttonholes.

Can I put in a request for polka dots to take the crown from stripes? We just need to find a successor to plaid for next spring. Answers on a postcard please.

Mark Ronson and family make like the Tenenbaums for Harper’s Bazaar

By admin on August 11th, 2008

royal tenenbaums family mark ronson samantha harpers bazaar.jpgAlong with sisters Samantha and Charlotte, Mark Ronson took part in a photoshoot for Harper’s Bazaar which saw them dress up as the various characters from Wes Anderson’s Royal Tenenbaums.

Mark dressed as the tracksuited Chas, Samantha took the part of suicidal Margot and Charlotte was tennis genius Richie. It’s a great idea ,I’m just disappointed they didn’t set up a shot of Charlotte as Richie in his orange tent pitched up in the Tenenbaum’s front room. More images after the jump.

Calvin Klein announces menswear move to New York

By admin on August 7th, 2008

calvin klein new york fashion week milan menswear.jpgCalvin Klein have decided to move their menswear catwalk collection to New York this season instead of Milan. The company will still present their collection to retailers in Milan this coming January but the show itself will take place on the ground floor of the company’s headquarters.

“As this is the year we have brought the Collection business back in house and will celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary, we thought this was an appropriate time to change things up a bit,” said Tom Murry, President & COO, Calvin Klein, Inc. He went on to add: “We see this as a great opportunity to support our U.S. business and retail partners and acknowledge our heritage in New York City.”

The move isn’t permanent but could be a sign that designers are getting a little concerned about retailers’ spending during the economic downturn.

HBO + Kanye West = Reality TV heaven?

By admin on August 5th, 2008

kanyecollegejkt.jpg
Since everyone from Scott Baio to DMX has a reality show these days, why not Kanye West? That’s what HBO have been thinking but apparently they need a writer to “capture Kanye in the right way”. This isn’t the first time West has featured on HBO, with an Entourage cameo to his name.

Traditionally, reality shows with stars in the prime tend to be tame affairs (seeing as they actually have some dignity to lose, unlike Scott Baio) but seeing as Kanye has had most of his outrageous moments captured on tape, it might just be no holds barred. After the jump, I’ve included a clip of Being Bobby Brown – a reality show all the others wish they could be.
