Going to Henley Regatta? Wear Comme des Garcons plaid jacket

By admin on July 4th, 2008

comme des garcons plaid jakcet henly regatta.jpg
This weekend sees Henley Regatta in full swing and if you’re heading down to Boris Johnson’s old constituency you’d better look the part. Comme des Garcons’ plaid jacket will look great teamed with a straw boater and some deck shoes and is perfect for lounging on the banks of the Thames.

The acid-bright check contrasts nicely with the chunky, boxy tailoring and slightly cropped sleeves while the pale cream buttons add a vintage feel. You can get your hands on this coat at Browns for the sale price of £255, tally ho!

Thierry Henry steps out in New York

By admin on July 3rd, 2008

thierry henry shopping new york.jpg I almost didn’t recognise Thierry Henry in this picture, gone is the footballer’s Gallic chic style which has been replaced by an altogether more ‘street’ (whatever that means) look.

We’re more used to seeing him in sharp suits like when he launched a capsule collection with Tommy Hilfiger late last year. The French aren’t known for their sartorial grasp on casualwear but I like his New York look. Although the jeans would look better either tighter or baggier and I’d ditch the dodgy belt altogether the trainers and t-shirt are pretty cool. All he needs is a few accessories to set off the tie print tee but the matching red sunnies are a nice touch.

What do you think, do you prefer our Tel in casual or smarter looks?

I’m Still Not Convinced- The Short Suit

By Will Reid on July 3rd, 2008

shortsuit.jpgA while ago, we remarked on how a Telegraph feature on the short suit had used rather unusual models to create an unflattering portrayal of the look.

However, this picture (taken at the launch of Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme in Milan,) shows that even the fashionistos of the industry can’t get it right. While also not the most model-ly of men, Bruce Pask of the New York Times would be one of those I thought could pull of this challenging look.

My verdict? I think this would look better with cropped sleeves. Simply roll up your long sleeves to the elbow or at least take them off the cuff as this contrast of short/sleeve length is usually an unflattering one.

Try shoes that can be worn without socks; a cool loafer or Topman canvas brogue. I, as a bit of a sartorial risk-taker (read: hit/miss dresser,) would add a pair of House of Holland velvet loafers in shocking purple or pink.

Now if only Lapo Elkann would give it a try!

Celeb Style: Jay-Z does Geek Chic 2 Months After Matt Damon

By Will Reid on July 3rd, 2008

jayz.jpgLast Friday, Jay-Z turned up on Jonathan Ross and as the guestlist was revealed, I was delighted to see good ol’ Jay-Z rocking the Geek-Chic look. But sadly for Mr. Z (can we call him that?) Matt Damon had tried the look over two months before. Usually an all-round innovator and owner of his own label, I have come to expect more of this man with those infamous 99 problems.

Okay, okay- maybe Im being slightly sarcastic but let’s be honest; that beige jacket is rather horrific. However, I’m liking the ‘Globe-trotter’ scarf tied into the loop of his jeans and with quotes like “home was like the cliché of rough…when I was nine I saw someone shot for the first time” and “my favourite is heartfelt music… I listen to Coldplay, 50 Cent, Kanye West,” what’s not to love?

Pharrell removes tattoos with new skin

By admin on July 2nd, 2008

pharrell williams nerd tattoo.jpgNERD‘s Pharrell Williams is undergoing a radical treatment to remove the tattoos he’s accumulated over the years. He’s obviously outgrown his ink saying: “It’s going to be pricey, but f**k it, it’s worth it. I got fire on my arms! I’m a grown man!”

Pharrell explains the strange procedure which isn’t for the faint-hearted: “There’s an institute called the Wake Forest Institute in North Carolina for Regenerative Skin Treatment. It’s basically like getting a skin graft, but you’re not taking skin from your ass or your legs. These guys actually grow the skin for you.”

John Galliano Paris Menswear collections S/S 09

By admin on July 2nd, 2008

john galliano menswear spring summer paris 09.jpg
When most of the fashion world is retreating to the relative safety of preppy, classic looks Galliano’s Paris menswear show last week was a riot of colour and you could tell he certainly wasn’t thinking of the credit crunch.
Drinks cans, colourful afros and shimmering lipcolours accompanied the fanciful clothes which included day-glo sporrans, newsprint tailored blazers and t-shirt featuring pop art images of Galliano himself. See after the jump for backstage images from the collection.

Jay-Z’s Glastonbury performance gets the Liz Jones treatment

By admin on July 1st, 2008

jay-z glastonbury festival oasis.jpg
Jay-Z took to the Pyramid Stage at this year’s Glastonbury wearing a plaid scarf, dark jeans, puffa and shades looking every inch like a piece of hip-hop royalty. Jay won over the crowd, opening with a hammed-up cover of Oasis’ Wonderwall and as he later told MTV Base it was his attempt to poke fun at the whole controversy that has surrounded this Glastonbury: “That’s my sense of humor,” Jay told MTV Base. “I have a sense of humor like a Brit, so I thought people would appreciate that. Noel Gallagher was one of the biggest detractors, so I figured that was a cool way to start the show.”

Liz Jones‘ Glastonbury review
of Jay-Z (I can hear Jones calling him Jay-Zed in my head) is just as funny but for entirely different reasons. See after the jump to continue reading and see Jay-Z’s performance at Glastonbury.

Karl Lagerfeld stars in road safety campaign

By admin on July 1st, 2008

lagerfieldrsc.jpgAfter starring as a DJ in GTA4 and making a diet book, Karl Lagerfeld decided to take on road safety in this campaign. The text reads “It’s yellow, it’s ugly, it doesn’t go with anything, but it could save your life”. Slightly more sage advice than what was given out in his dieting book.

Visionaire 54 SPORT- A Lacoste Tribute

By Will Reid on July 1st, 2008

visionairelacoste.jpgThe latest edition of Visionaire has been outed as a tribute to Lacoste’s 75th Anniversary. So far, the infamously expensive Visionaire collection has seen issues made of puzzles and vinyl records but we are now being treated to the ‘first wearable issue.’ Confused? Let me explain.

This issue of Visionaire, in collaboration with Lacoste, will contain three state-of-the-art “full-coverage, full-colour, photographically-printed Lacoste polo shirts featuring artwork by some of the world’s leading artists and photographers.” Basically, the magazine will come in the form of a suitcase containing twelve images and three different shirts. There will be one small, one medium and one large within each copy and there will be four different sets of the SPORT issue. Included is the artwork of Nick Knight, Karl Lagerfeld and Michael Stipe to name but a brilliant few.

The issue will be previewed during next week’s Paris Haute-Couture collections. Those with a subscription are guaranteed a copy.

Each issue costs $250 (£125.)

Brandish Poll- ‘Luke + Kelly 4 Ever?’

By Will Reid on June 30th, 2008

lukeandkelly.jpgI’m officially torn- Luke Worrall, the male-supermodel and It-boy of the London fashion scene has been spotted (now that’s an understatement) with Kelly Osbourne. My question is whether she is a suitable match for a rising fashion star. I’m personally not a fan but then I’m a fashion writer who is rather over-protective when it comes to sartorial stars. That’s right Tom Cruise- don’t even try to get near our Aggy!

The couple were spotted at the ‘Night of Tease’ fundraiser at the Cafe de Paris on the 15th of May and have since been seen in more cute outfits and even cuter embraces. What do you think? Does ‘Worrelly‘ have a future or are we agreed that Ms. Osbourne and Mr. Worrall are as bad a match as Amy Winehouse and ‘Free Nelson Mandela?’ Poll after the jump.

Paris Menswear shows see first ghost model at Yohji Yamamoto

By admin on June 27th, 2008

The New York Times are going gaga for Sergio Lo Re, who made an appearance at the Vivienne Westwood show this week.

His looks are a heady mix of chubby Italian kid and sleazy lothario which isn’t too much of a hit with the rest of the fashion team but I think he’s cute.

Lo Re might be a little unconventional looking, but Yohji Yamamoto took things a step further in Paris yesterday by picking a model who is a bona fide ghost. Admittedly close up (click on the thumbnail) he doesn’t look that ghostly but from far away he is definitely a member of the undead.

NHL player guest edits Men’s Vogue

By admin on June 26th, 2008

Men’s Vogue is doing an interesting experiment this week as they allow NHL player Sean Avery to guest edit their website. During his time there he’s written about his internship experience there, given us the lowdown on his favourite New York hotspots and done a couple of photoshoots.

I would have found this infinitely more interesting if I held any interest in the NHL, but it’s still intriguing to see a professional American athlete display his love for high end brands in this manner. It also had me thinking which sports star would be best suited to guest editing Brandish? The poll is after the jump.

Lucian Freud at the Tatler party

By admin on June 26th, 2008

lucien freud tatler party.jpgIf I was a man (obviously) this would be the image I would want to represent my retirement.

Lucien Freud was snapped at the Tatler party last night looking relaxed and stylish in a khaki suit, tweed waistcoat and coordinating neckscarf.

The subdued colours are complemented by the burgundy accent of the neckscarf which quite nicely matches the large glass of wine Freud is holding, another essential component of retirement methinks.

A.P.C Summer Sale

By admin on June 26th, 2008

With Liberty and Men A La Mode all starting their summer sales recently, APC have got in on the act with their summer sale. As APC’s stock tends to swerve between ‘pre-order’ and ‘out of stock’, it’s fair to say that this sale will run out of stock pretty quickly. I would usually do the whole pick of the bunch thing, but as I’m in love with pretty much every item available at APC, they’d be no point.
