There’s an embarrassment of riches on the 10 essentials front as the staff of Fantastic Man, Purple Fashion and GQ Style all chip in with their lists. Founders of Fantastic Man Gert Jonkers and Jop Van Bennekom have the kind of choices you’d expect them to have, with their own pair of jeans, embroidered chinos and Hardy Amies’ ‘ABC of Men’s fashion’ all making the list.
Purple cofounder Oliver Zahm’s list is very classic Hollywood, as he lists a YSL leather jacket, Ray Bans and a Honda 750 motorbike. GQ Style’s creative director David Bradshaw has a simpler list than both the aforementioned, listing a crossroads bike, his back garden and his wedding ring. He also mentions some Tom Ford sunglasses, reminding you that he does work at GQ style.

Today is the last day of the Milan Menswear shows and by the looks of things they’re not taking any sartorial chances, preferring the relative comfort and security of preppy.
This perennial favourite appeared on the catwalks at Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Enrico Coveri.

You should all be grateful. I was this close to typing ‘Converse starts boxing clever’ in that headline. It’s hard to talk about these Converses without thinking about boxing as the reduction of the sole makes them look more suited for 12 rounds in the ring.
As far as gold trainers go these are ok, but they don’t look better than the other pair of gold Converses we posted a while back. If you like the boxing-style ones better, they’ll be available from next week.

Jermaine Dupri showed his love for MJ at a recent Island Def Jam Party, by wearing a t-shirt with Jacobs’ recent Interview Magazine cover. Other ‘slebs at the showbiz party included Nas and Kelis.
The bash was to celebrate the launch of TAG Records (as in TAG Body Spray), which is a seemingly bizarre venture combining the the Proctor & Gamble-owned company’s marketing power with Dupri’s experience.

The Barack Obama bandwagon grows by the second, with Donatella Versace dedicating her SS09 collection to him. Versace stated that Obama’s style is for “a relaxed man who doesn’t need to flex muscles to show he has power.”
Obama will probably just thank Versace and move on, because he’s already been slated for being a ‘GQ candidate’. The thinking behind that slur is ridiculous, as it insinuates that spending time on your appearance has to be to the detriment of other characteristics. This also shows just how famous Obama is right now, with a world renowned designer using his name to garner some press attention.

The flying tomato has added another accolade to his CV: Shaun White is the latest superstar to grace the cover of super stylish US men’s magazine Nylon Guys – little brother title to fave ladies title Nylon. Writer Luke Crissell paints a unique portrait of the Olympic Gold winner, as he hangs out with the skate and snow wonderkid at home in San Diego – complete with photoshoot by Kevin Zacher and simultaneous pool party.
Alongside former cover stars Pete Wentz, Hayden Christiansen, Pharrell Williams and Bathing Ape’s Nigo it’s an interesting cover choice for the mag and equally cements Shaun’s status as now a true mainstream celeb. Although, from reading this interview, he’s still unfazed and having a ball.

Have you ever replicated your favourite musical icon’s style? When I was younger, I wanted to dress like Curtis Mayfield, but couldn’t find the right clothes (I’d never heard of a vintage store back then). It’s probably for the best, as dressing like this when everyone was into So Solid Crew wouldn’t have been the best idea. This James Mollision exhibition features people who have styled themselves on their idols and is called The Disciples.
Focusing on everyone from 50 Cent to Bob Dylan, the exhibition showcases how devoted fans are influenced by their idols’ style and how far they’ll go to replicate it.

Love it or hate it, the opening of another Topman in the UK would be met with nothing more than a shrug. In fact, given their ubiquity, it would be met with a half shrug at best. However, news that a Topman will open in New York has created so much attention that Topman started the black trouser project to showcase some up and coming designers.
Featuring designers Patrick Ervell, Tim Hamilton, Aitor Throup, Ann-Sofie Back and Todd Lynn, this is the next logical step from their white shirt project. If you had to compare the two projects, I’d say that this is slightly more daring as there’s less you can do with trousers without making them totally unwearable. They’ll be available from October from $120 in the NY flagship store. I assume they’ll be available from the Oxford Circus branch and online as well from around the same time.

‘Done right’ is one of the most interesting features on Men.Style.com right after the monthly 10 rules and Glenn O’Brien’s blog. The Sartorialist’s style insights are always a good read, even if they’re aimed towards the slightly older gentleman.
This feature’s main style tips are pale blue blazers, vintage shoes, shorter (not short!) shorts, spring scarves and white shoes. White shoes are a difficult one as they either make you look like a Mediterranean style icon or an English pimp, depending on how they’re worn. Pale blue blazers are a great look and I think more people would wear this if menswear stores started taking a few more risks with colour.
Seeing as we’ve been bleating on about the merits of short/mid length shorts for months now, what’s taking it so long to hit the high streets? I don’t know if my eyes can take anymore combat Cargo shorts.

The Mojo Honours List was a predictably geriatric affair with Lemmy, Led Zeppelin and Jonny Rotten amongst the rock aristocracy.
Rotten accepted an award on behalf of the Sex Pistols, launching into a tirade about Britain: “Look at what Britain is becoming. You can’t drink, you can’t smoke” before calling the audience a “bunch of mellow piss wipes”, nice. My favourites The Specials came out to accept the Hall of Fame award and other notable musicians in attendance were Richard Hawley, Nick Cave and the kids from The Last Shadow Puppets.
Best dressed of the evening surely goes to Seasick Steve who stood out in his uniform of denim and braces. I usually wouldn’t advocate the crime of denim dream (i.e. denim jeans and jacket) but Steve has the natural charm to carry it off.

In a match made in hell, Ed Hardy’s Christian Audigier and Michael Jackson look set to collaborate on an upcoming clothing line. I would have to say that it’s best to take this news with a giant gulp of salt.
Looking at the Ed Hardy website, Audigier seems to be into self promotion more than promoting his clothes (there are 18 pictures of the man on the home page alone). Despite his awful taste, he’s a smart man and knows that mentioning Michael Jackson will get him into every tabloid paper in the world.

Giorgio Armani has dressed a plethora of celebrities, and now he can add dressing a superhero to the list. The latest Batman movie, The Dark Knight, will see Christian Bale wearing an array of Giorgio Armani hand made-to-measure suits whenever he plays Batman’s alter-ago, Bruce Wayne. Not that Wayne wears suits throughout the movie, he had the choice of custom made Armani single-breasted or three-button suits, single-breasted tuxedos and black wool coats.
