Russell Brand simultaneously one of the best and worst dressed men in Britain

By admin on April 4th, 2008

brand.jpgGQ revealed their best dressed list on Wednesday, with Daniel Craig once again topping the polls for the second year running. But a couple of nominees managed to walk away with more accolades than the James Bond star, despite coming runner up.

David Beckham and Russell Brand placed 9th and 1st respectively on GQ’s list of Britain’s worst dressed men, as well as claiming 6th and 39th on the best dressed list. The backlash against Pete Doherty’s dress sense (‘feral’ – GQ) seems to be in full swing, as he charts second. Full list after the jump.

Comme des Garcons for H&M coming to a store near you in Autumn!

By admin on April 3rd, 2008

H&M commes des garcons collection menswear.jpgThe closest I’ve come to being this excited about an H&M collaboration is the forthcoming Marimekko collection, but the news that Comme Des Garçons are planning a collection with H&M surely tops them all.

The collection will include womenswear and menswear as well as accessories and a unisex fragrance which I can’t wait to sniff! Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garçons’ designer and founder is also producing a few children’s pieces.

Margareta van den Bosch, who recently took semi-retirement but is still at H&M as creative advisor said: “Rei Kawakubo has been at the top of our wish list for a long time and we are thrilled that she has chosen to collaborate with us.” Visit Catwalk Queen to keep reading.

VMAN 10- Spring/Summer 2008: Ashton Kutcher

By Will Reid on April 1st, 2008

ASHTON KUTCHER .jpg About a month ago, I posted on an accessories editorial that had used graphics and colour to present a Manga-style perspective of this season’s it-items. Well now, that same issue of one of menswear’s most fashion-forward magazines has been released and Ashton Kutcher is on its cover. Fake arms, wires, polished warriors- everything gleams with the shine of modernity. Ashton poses with a synthetic arm and his accompanying editorial, entitled ‘I’m Not Real,’ is fun and fast as well as overly-futuristic.

See after the jump for an issue review and more pictures.

Frock Horror Revisited- Paul Smith does Heather Mills

By Will Reid on March 28th, 2008

heather mills macartney paul smith waistcoat.jpg
Last week, as news was released of the Macca divorce settlement, my brother Doug (as well as the lovely Kim over at Catwalk Queen) brought my attention to the criminal costume of Miss Mills.

Was it Westwood? McQueen? The (ex-) McCartney herself? Well no dear brother, it appears that her suit may have been Paul Smith. I was sifting through the menswear Paul Smith PS collection and came across this waistcoat from the legendary Brit. Basking in the sunlight of indie styling and candid-style photography, this waistcoat is a perfect example of menswear doing it better.

China Design Now exhibition at the V&A

By admin on March 26th, 2008

china design now v&a.jpg
Left: Chen Shaohua, Graphic Design in China exhibition, poster, 1992. Right: Runyo, PK and HIMM, Nike Year of the Dog Air Force 1, shoes, designed 2005.

The V&A’s China Design Now kicked off a couple of weeks ago and it looks like a visual feast. It’s a compilation of the best in architecture, graphic design, photography and fashion from the world’s biggest manufacturer. It’s the first exhibition of its kind in the UK and seeing as we’ll all be speaking Chinese in a few years anyway I’m definitely going to head over and get a head start in some design swotting!

Madras shirt spotted on Bricolage band member

By admin on March 20th, 2008

bricolage twee as fuck 1.jpg
Bricolage are a band I saw last week as part of the excellent Twee as Fuck club night, and as much as I loved their set (click on the link to hear the brilliant ‘footsteps’) what immediately struck me was the awesomeness of their outfits. Their bassist sported an impressive madras shirt and I immediately thought of all you lovely Brandish readers. Not only that but the lead vocalist had a fine print shirt, and the guitarist had a very special Fair Isle cardie and a quiff so substantial you could have quite happily built a block of council flats on top of it. See after the jump for more images of the band.

Marc Jacobs spoof adverts by Hart+Larsson

By admin on March 20th, 2008

hart larsson new enthusiasm marc jacobs spoof juergen teller1.jpg
Forget Holy Moly or Popbitch on this pre-bank holiday work slump, while away a couple of hours on Hart+Larsson’s website for they are the geniuses behind the Marc Jacobs spoof adverts doing the rounds on the web at the moment. The images were posted on The New Enthusiasm and display all the hallmark characteristics of a Marc Jacobs ad except with Hart and Larsson themselves dressing as Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. Somehow I think after this ol’ blue hair will have to change advertising tack, or else get Hart+Larsson on board, which would be amazing times infinity.
Fashionista were the ones who got to the bottom of mystery, when they received an email from the mischievous pair; see after the jump to read the email and for more of the inspired images.

Kurt Cobain-inspired Converse range

By admin on March 19th, 2008

converse kurt cobain trainer shoe.jpgI would have thought the era of Kurt Cobain hero-worship would have long reached its expiry date by now but it seems that there is still some mileage to be had in the dead grunge idol.

Fourteen years after his death Converse are releasing a collection of sneakers inspired by the Nirvana frontman. “Distressed in the way Kurt Cobain wore them, the shoes display his hopes, dreams and lyrics from amazing songs such as ‘Come As You Are,’ ” the press release reads.

Tim Hamilton’s range for Uniqlo

By admin on March 18th, 2008

tim hamilton uniqlo.jpg
Tim Hamilton has designed a collection for Uniqlo and it’s a nicely filtered version of his own stuff. Tim said: “Merging refined elegance with youthful energy, this collection took as a source the modern, playful images of Bruno Munari’s photo-reportage. Finding humour in the industrial, modernising settings of 1930s Europe, Munari shows carelessly chic youth butting heads with the buttoned-up, formal establishment.”

Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz is the latest star to dip into fashion

By admin on March 18th, 2008

80023235.jpgPete Wentz, bassist for Fall Out Boy and otherwise known as Ashlee Simpson’s boyfriend, has hit the fashion sphere.

Wentz has signed on to launch a junior sportswear line exclusive to Nordstrom in the US. The collection, which will carry the Clandestine Industries label, will feature graphic T-shirts, hoodies, denim jeans and accessories.

Last year, Wentz teamed up with DKNY Jeans (who are now collaborating with Rachel Bilson) to create a limited edition line of jeans. Since then the Clandestine Industries brand has continued selling online and from a boutique in his hometown of Chicago.

US Vogue April 2008- LeBron James and Gisele Bundchen

By Will Reid on March 18th, 2008

293lebrongisele031408
For possibly the first time in its history, US Vogue is attracting attention for something other than its general lack of interest. The reason; this year’s ‘Shape Issue’ features LeBron James, the 6 ft 8 basketball player, posing with Gisele Bundchen, the 5 ft 11 supermodel.

So, still questioning why this could be seen as interesting by those within the fashion world? Well this is only the third time that a male has been featured on a US Vogue cover (after Richard Gere and George Clooney) and the first time that said male has been of colour- satisfied yet? Within the magazine, we have a feature which takes models like Gisele Bundchen and Doutzen Kroes and pairs them with athletes like Shaun White and Apolo Ohno. It is rare that so many stars come together (especially for fashion) and all those included are at the top of their game (pardon the use of this particular expression.) This is an issue for everyone and although some cynics are predicting a major letdown, let’s look up. In the case of 6 ft 8 LeBron, you’ll be doing it anyway.

See after the jump for great screencaps from a video on the issue. (Source: The Fashion Spot)

This isn’t strictly fashion but Paul Smith designed it and it’s Friday so what the hey. Recent Eindhoven (it’s in the Netherlands) Masters graduate Hunn Wai helped out to create this witty ping pong table featuring a doily net and dark wood veneer…Ping pong has never been so classy.
