Tom Ford in Fantastic Man

By Isabelle on March 14th, 2008

Tom_fantastic_man_fordWe’ve been waiting for the latest issue of Fantastic Man with baited breath and not only does it have a beautifully footnoted interview with Tom Ford but it also features Scott Schuman (aka The Sartorialist, but you know that) and a beautifully photographed Maurice Sheltens shoot showing how to pack your clothes properly.

The designer talks about his art collection and his time in New York at the tail end of the ’70s. He also discusses the sexuality that runs through all his creative endeavours: ‘Sex is part of my image’ he says. ‘I’m extremely sensual. If I like someone I want to touch them, if I love them I want to hold onto them. I’m very physical.’
Ford compares himself to Alexander McQueen and Nicolas Ghesquière saying: ‘I am very much a designer but I am not an artist and I have never pretended to be.’

Another Man Spring/ Summer 2008- Emile Hirsch

By Will Reid on March 13th, 2008

21677211wu3From Madonna and Tom Ford to Drew Barrymore and Gwen Stefani; March is the issue in which all the magazines showcase the latest collections and therefore (along with September) it is the month that ever editor, reader and model either dreads or not-so-patiently awaits.

At one time this only applied to the girls mags but as the menswear market booms we are seeing a shift and the latest issue of Another Man only furthers this theory. Emile Hirsch, star of Sean Penn’s ‘Into the Wild’ and the new blockbuster ‘Speed Racer,’ is the cover model of the latest issue and the styling of the cover is a fresh and welcome relief from the dramatic and overly artistic looks that most editors go for around this time of the year. No leather or chains or sharp tailoring but only the paisley printed pleasure of newly-sprung spring joy. That and the undoubtable good looks of Hirsch add to this ‘New Bohemia’ mood.

However, do not be fooled by the slightly dazed atmosphere of Hirsch’s pensive stare- this issue involves the rebellious likes of Nick Cave, Michael Stipe and Jon Savage. Throw on a patterned shirt, light a (completely drug-free) spliff and chime with the birds- Spring has officially sprung.

You Would If You Could… The Awkward Lengths

By Will Reid on March 13th, 2008

00360mThe next look to make our list is the awkward length. This was a hard one to put into this feature as some do manage to pull it off but not everyone is Terence Koh and it only took a look at the local fashionisto’s crash and burn outfit of Kris van Assche-style combat with tight tee to know that this was one to be hastily put down.

So where did it all go wrong? When did the matronliness of Britain extend to Dolce & Gabbana jodhpurs and McQueen knits? At D&G, trousers were either tucked into boots or (sharp intake of breath) fitted with elasticated hems- yes, the same fabric responsible for the horrific Rocky Balboa-tracksuit/pantaloon ankle. McQueen went for his usual unwearable but exquisite fashions and approached this trend with a blend of Alpaca knit and Spanish embroidery. Some celebs have tried to wear this look but unless you are an artist/indie fashion editor/musician/girlfriend of Irina Lazareanu-type, it’s best to stay away. For those of you willing to take on the challenge and prove me wrong- take a look at this Rick Owens thigh-length top from Brown’s.

Purple tipped to go from strength to strength this autumn

By ShinyMedia on March 12th, 2008

Uniqlo_purple_aubergine_cardigan
According to Drapers purple is set to make a lasting impression on menswear wardrobes this autumn but I’m not convinced. Steve Cochrane, managing director of independent department store
Psyche in Middlesbrough, said: "Purple is already a big colour and is
going to get bigger. Lilac is popular now, but it’s going to be full-on
purple for autumn." Shades from lavender to plum have proved pretty
popular with buyers but they’ve shied away from block colours opting
instead for stripes or checks.

There are lots of hot colours around at the moment, -brights like coral and sky blue and neutral shades of beige, grey and taupe are still looking fresh, but purple seems to be a bit of a faddy shade. Trend colours are always a bit hit and miss and can sometimes be a bit of an obvious fashion choice. Having said that Uniqlo have a merino wool cardigan on offer in a pretty subtle aubergine colour which I could go for. Are you a purple fan? Take our poll!

André 3000 talks about Benjamin Bixby and pledges his love for short shorts

By Isabelle on March 11th, 2008

Andre_3000_benjamin_bixbyIn his latest film André Benjamin (pictured at the preview) got a taste for short shorts, the kind that basketball players wore in the ’70s. Semi-Pro was released last week and is a Will Ferrell comedy about you guessed it, basketball in the ’70s.

Benjamin told the New York Times “by the time we started filming, the shorts were like a
second skin to me,” he says. “It seems like you can cut through the air
a little bit better in them.”

So will they feature in his upcoming Benjamin Bixby collection? Well maybe, the range is scheduled to come out in autumn and is inspired by college football circa 1935, André explains that Benjamin Bixby is someone who is "kind of like your uncle, or your granddad, and he has a
closet full of experiences and clothes, and he’s been around the
world".

I’ve got high hopes for this collection, André is a great dresser and visited Italian Factories and Parisian textile fairs to get some inside info. He even garnered some advice from Vogue’s Anna Wintour so I’m pretty sure it should be a hit. One question though, I love his outfit (which includes a Benjamin Bixby tie worn as a belt) but the trousers seem like they could do with a little tailoring, am I right?

Aquascutum AquaMac Tompkin

By Will Reid on March 11th, 2008

Theaquamac_m
Only a few years ago, Aquascutum was an ancient brand on the verge of becoming one of fashion’s victims- because fashion has no mercy and all that Liz Hurley-tagline jazz. However, in the past few years it has managed a complete turnaround and is now at the forefront of style. It’s latest fix- the AquaMac, is a his ‘n’ hers item that is on trend but enviously practical. Introduced as a “stripped-down modern trench coat” on the Aquascutum site, it has Raglan sleeves for that Miami Vice roll-up look and is a. available in a range of colours, b. a raincoat and c. foldaway! Could you ask for any more in a future classic? Available in all sizes from S to XXL and just over eight colours, it is reasonably priced at £295. Order yours online now.

Trends: Watch & Wear- A Daily Dose of Dalí

By Will Reid on March 10th, 2008

00100m_2From Dalí’s lobster phones and melting clock faces to Damien Hirst’s butterfly works- Surrealism is something that we can’t seem to get out of our systems. We buy into the singers who prance around in vintage band uniforms (Gwen) and the art but something we rarely show an interest in is surrealist fashion.

The reason? It’s just too embarrassing to pop down to Tesco’s with a pair of devil horns protruding from your well-styled scalp. Well not anymore. This post will allow you to test the look without looking visually-testing and trust me when I tell you that it is easier than you think.  See after the jump for more information on where this look began and (wearable) items you can put on your shopping list to mimic it.

Fantastic Man Spring/Summer 2008: Tom Ford

By Will Reid on March 6th, 2008

Img121zh0When I have to be up at 6:30 tomorrow to tour a newbie I know I really shouldn’t be up late on The Fashion Spot, but if you see Tom Ford on the cover of a fairly underground men’s fashion mag it would be criminal not to post.

The news only came out on The Fashion Spot at 10:30 and at the time of writing it is 11:24 so there is not any news on contents at the moment except for the obvious presence of Mr. "My ads are so raunchy they should be banned" Ford.

Any followers of the great fashion maverick will know that he has successfully released fragrances for Estée Lauder as well as his own him and her scents. Also, Ford has released a sunglasses range and a menswear line both of which are firm fashion favourites. The sub-title of the cover states of the "wicked masterplan of the super gentleman" and I can only imagine what that wicked plan entails-ah, how much I love sartorial drama.

L’Uomo Vogue February 2008- Casey Affleck

By Will Reid on March 4th, 2008

Lumo1When I woke up this morning and sat down at my screen, I was confronted with the unsettlingly sad news of Tim leaving (is that fair for someone to have to deal with at such a vulnerable time of the day? – okay, it was 11:30.) As a result I was thrown into a mental retrospective of my short time at Brandish. The posts, the e-mails, the endless questions (sorry Isabelle!) and particularly the instance in which Tim edited a photo for me and sent it back to my grease-stained, holiday-rented and ancient computer even though I was a) in Tenerife and b) a complete stranger to him (Thanks Tim.) As part of this smile-inducing recall, I thought of one of my posts on L’Uomo Vogue. So later, when I was ‘surfing the web’ and found that Casey Affleck is on their latest ‘Hollywood Issue,’ I thought it was worth a post.

This looks amazing and with stars from Javier Bardem to Quentin Tarantino, you just have to look after the jump for more information and pics.

Keith Richards for Louis Vuitton

By ShinyMedia on March 3rd, 2008

keith richards louis vuitton annie leibovitz.jpg

We heard the rumours way back in January and the pictures are here. Keith Richards has been snapped by Annie Liebovitz for Louis Vuitton’s latest ad campaign which will make an appearance in April.

Antoine Arnault, Vuitton’s head of communications said "The good thing about Keith is, he’s big just about everywhere. He speaks to the 20-year-old who’s into rock ‘n’ roll and the 65-year-olds who went to [a Rolling Stones] concert when they were 20." Keef picked himself a leather jacket from a Vuitton store the day before the shoot. Click on the thumbnail to see full image.

Bobby Gillespie, We Are Scientists, Noel Fielding and The Horrors at the NME Awards

By Isabelle on February 29th, 2008

Bobby_gillespie_we_are_scientists_n

The NME Awards last night was a pretty stylish affair, most of the music crowd were dressed smartly although no one went for broke like the Arctic Monkeys at the Brits.
Bobby Gillespie looked splendid in a petrol blue suit and slim tie, I still think the Primal Scream frontman will be out-cooling everybody well into his ’70s. Chris Cain and indie prettyboy Keith Murray, the two remaining original members of We Are Scientists, rocked up proving the cliché that Americans are more tanned, have better teeth and are generally better looking than us Brits. Incidentally they are also wearing petrol blue tones, which might be an NME micro trend?
Reinforcing the pasty Brit stereotype was comedy pixie Noel Fielding who looks like he nicked his doctor bag from The Horrors (see after the jump). Agyness Deyn and Kelly Osbourne also looked pretty stylish at the event which saw Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons and Amy Winehouse take home awards.

Dazed and Confused: Madonna April 2008

By Will Reid on February 29th, 2008

Madonnadazedconfusedcopy_6Okay, okay- so Madonna on a magazine cover isn’t strictly menswear news but if anyone has pushed the boundaries of androgyny, it’s Madonna. As she appears on the cover of the latest issue of Dazed and Confused clad in horns, Chanel boxing gloves and peek-a-boo lingerie, Madonna is once again mixing men’s and femme’s.

Justin Timberlake signs for Givenchy

By admin on February 27th, 2008

Justin_timberlake_givenchyAnother day, another celebrity endorsement deal. Forbes report that Givenchy have signed Justin Timberlake to be the face of their new men’s perfume, which launches this autumn. The CEO of Parfums Givenchy released a statement saying that they chose La Trousersnake for his innate style: "He is a world-recognized trendsetter who redefines modern elegance."

Innate style, my foot and fourpence! Would someone with innate style be seen dead with his girlfriend wearing a matching denim outfits, let alone dressed up as Rag Dolly Anna (left)? I know it was the ’90s but my point is that JT might look good now but I suspect it’s only because his label’s employing a better stylist. To me, it always looks like the clothes are wearing him rather than the other way round.
Read the full story here and note how obsessed Forbes are with ranking and income -  a bit of subliminal advertising for their world famous lists.

Loden Dager for Uniqlo

By admin on February 27th, 2008

Uniqloloder

New York label Loden Dager are the latest in an
increasing line of designers to team up with Uniqlo,
creating a Spring/Summer mini collection. The collection is strong, with the
check shirt being the only really ugly piece on it. Some might say it’s a bit
dull but if your wardrobe needs great basic pieces to bring the kookier elements of your wardrobe together then you can’t really go wrong.

You Would If You Could… Bright Suits

By Will Reid on February 27th, 2008

Markronson2_2There are endless trends and endless items you can wear to copy them. However, some looks are just out there to be seen.

You know what I’m talking about- the type of outfit that you might be let off wearing if the road was a catwalk and we were extras from Madonna’s ‘Vogue,’ throwing shapes at helpless passers-by.  This post is out there to give those looks an airing (we might just tone it down a bit!) Let’s look at the bright suit which is a current favourite among paparazzi-prone men.
