Roberto Cavalli at H&M

By admin on October 17th, 2007

Topshop have H&M trumped when it comes to celebrity ranges, H&M have
had good quality ranges by Viktor & Rolf and now they have a new range by
Roberto Cavalli. As Cavalli is usually known for his garish exotic prints, I
can’t say I was particularly looking forward to this range, but I’m pleasantly
surprised by his understated range.

With that
said, it is a bit too understated,
bordering on boring. The trench coat is probably the best of the range I’ve
seen so far, but even that is done better by COS and will only be about £30
more expensive. The suits don’t have a great cut, as they’re not quite slim
enough for H&M’s target market and their chunky cardigan is boring with no
design quirks to speak of.

I could
well be wrong though and all these pieces could look great when worn. His range
will be in 200 selected stores around the world (with H&M being the only
high street store without a UK website yet) and is available from November 8th.

Take That give us their best Zoolander poses for Marks & Spencer

By ShinyMedia on October 5th, 2007

Not satisfied with simply reviving their singing careers, the lads from Take That have also been put in charge of reviving menswear at Marks & Spencer. It’s genius if you think about it… Hire the country’s biggest boy band to front your mum’s favourite store, it’s a sure to be a winner!

Looking rather sharp in the new range of M&S suits (Catwalk Queen’s Kim has confessed to a bit of a crush on Gary Barlow) the boys are doing their best ‘Blue Steel’ looks for the campaign which launches this month.

Psst… Irina Lazareanu and Pete Doherty are engaged!

By Isabelle on October 3rd, 2007

75412613.jpgWWD has revealed that Canadian-born model and former drummer for the Babyshambles, Irina Lazareanu, has become engaged to none other than Pete Doherty! "I very recently got engaged," she announced after she was spotted wearing an engagement ring backstage at Paris Fashion Week.

Lazareanu, who was also the ‘face’ of Kate Moss’s debut range for Topshop, was keeping quiet on who the lucky man is. But after years of making beautiful music together in the Babyshambles and rekindling their romance after Doherty’s break-up with Moss, sources are speculating a rocking marriage for the pair.

Talk about incestuous!

Michael Gondry’s weird Motorola RAZR2 advert ain’t that weird

By admin on September 27th, 2007

Made by Michael Gondry? What, this video? Really? I never would have guessed that the director of surreal films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep and of surreal music videos for Bjork and Daft Punk could ever come up with something as head-achingly weird as this. I can’t even tell what this is advertising, it’s just so strange.

If you couldn’t tell, I’m being sarcastic. Of course I know what it’s bloody advertising – the clue is in the great big "RAZR2" slogan and "Motorola" motif that pops up at the end. And it’s not even that weird. Peoples on the internets are so dumb sometimes. Lol. Anyway, it’s still a great video.

Master Chief’s newest USB incarnation

By admin on September 25th, 2007

We’d seen the Kubricks, watched reports spill in from all around the world as it went to launch, then, today, the big one dropped through the letterbox at Shiny Towers. Yes, Halo 3 is finally here.

So, along with the Kubricks, collectors models and life size recreations we can expect anything and everything to get the Halo treatment. It’ll be the gamers equivalent of Hello Kitty merchandise! Although I’m not sure if Master Chief will hold the same appeal for women as a Kitty vibrator

The latest Halo-fied goods come in the form of these USB drives that come in the usual colours and a number of different memory sizes. Each one is preloaded with artwork from a forthcoming Halo novel as well as an episode of This Spartan Life. The largest, 4GB drive is pretty expensive at £60, but they’re also limited edition.

Buy two and sell the second one on eBay. I reckon you’ll make your money back twice over…

High-concept Incognito Watch is also highly invisible

By admin on September 25th, 2007

Would you hand over £275,000 of your own cash in return for a product that you’d not even seen, let alone layed your hands on it so you can have a tinker with it? No? Well, there’s a surprise.

However, that’s exactly what one doofus with more money than sense has done, buying a timepiece that has yet to be completed. The auction was one of many that took place at Monaco’s Only Watch 07 event, which saw a series of limited and first edition watches sold off to the same people who can afford docking duties in the city’s harbour.

The ultra high-concept Incognito Watch (is that meant to be ironic?) by House of DeWitt was present at the auction in name only, without even a concept drawing in sight. However, watch "architect" Jean-Michel Wilmotte described the watch "an exceptional horological creation and authentic machine of future time." So it tells the time then? Check out the unbelievable press release here.

But for all my cynicism, I must point out that many of the proceeds went to charity. Which is a good thing. Isn’t it?

Burton Black Label launches

By Isabelle on September 24th, 2007

Compared to the fast-moving world of women’s fashion where new collaborations and high-street ranges are ten-a-penny it’s not that often that you get such exciting news in menswear. Which is why I’m pretty chuffed that Burton are launching their Black Label, a premium range of clothing for the more discerning gent. All the clothing comes in neutral greys, blacks and whites and tends towards classic cuts and styles so it’s not really a case of snapping up a must-have novelty piece but more about plugging those pesky wardrobe gaps with some great essentials.

Fantastic Koodos competition

By admin on September 20th, 2007

Leading online fashion retailer Koodos has just released news of a great new incentive for shopping on their online store. From 20th of September until 18th of December, customers registering with Koodos will be able to test their luck on Koodos’ "Wheels Of Fashion", playing for a chance to win part of a £13,000 fashion give-away.

Shopholics simply need to register their details and pull the lever to enter the entirely free competition. Lining up three matching symbols on the wheels gives the player an instant prize, ranging from money off vouchers to a £200 diesel outfit. And referring friends bags shoppers an extra spin of the wheel with every pal they sign up. I think I’ll be registering a couple of accounts myself…

Hussein Chalayan’s collection combines Tranformers technology, high fashion and nudity

By admin on September 20th, 2007

Designers of haut couture have been responsible for some pretty weird, wonderful and creative designs in the past. However, none have been so "innovative" and forward thinking as the outfits being created by left-field designer Hussein Chalayan.

Combining Transformers style technology and high fashion, Hussein has managed to come up with some pretty far out designs. And yes, I know there’s no menswear range, but hopefully Hussein will come up with something for us blokes in the future. Like a jacket that turns into a fully-operational Apache gunship.

By the way, if your work place frowns upon nudity, you might want to skip the last 20 seconds.

Style Icon: Sid Vicious

By admin on September 19th, 2007

Is it lack of money or just sheer boredom? In keeping with the glut of rock bands that are suddenly reforming this year, the Sex Pistols have announced that they are to reform for a gig this coming November, with tickets on sale this coming Friday. The four surviving members – John Lydon, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock – told NME that they’d perform a on off show at the Brixton Academy on November 8th in celebration of the 30th year since the release of Never Mind The Bollocks. Hardly punk is it?

But the true purpose of this article isn’t to pay homage to the members that are still amongst the living (just, mind), but to the member who was the true embodiment of the punk ethos – Sid Vicious. With that trade-mark sneer, dubious muscial talent and boyish-but-scuzzy looks, Sid was the Pete Doherty of the punk era. Only infinitely cooler.

If Sid had been born today, he certainly would have played muse to many designers, such was the way he carried off his own unique style. Most of what he wore wouldn’t look out of place in a contemporary collection, although I don’t think the "Neo-Nazi" look would go down quite so well in certain circles…

Talk Like A Pirate Day: Insert pirate related word/pun/phrase here

By admin on September 19th, 2007

Avast me hearties! Yarrr! Splice the mainbrace! Shiver me timbercles! Dead man’s chest, etc. etc.

Right, now that’s out of the way, I can tell you all about Talk Like A Pirate Day in the Queen’s own English. Or my loose grasp of it. Either way, it’s easier to understand without a load of "avasts" and "yarrs" peppered between words. And a lot quicker to write.

Talk Like A Pirate Day is pretty self explanatory. Every September the 19th, landlubbers (watch it!) around the globe rejoice by talking like an 18th century marauder of the high seas.  Many take it further, with the TLAPD founders encouraging all those scurvy sea-dogs to actually dress like Cap’n Jack Sparrow, or host pirate parties and fundraisers. The UK HQ of TLAPD, Yarr, have actually released a single to raise cash for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Other than that, there’s not much else to it. Even the original TLAPD "organisers" admit that it’s really silliness for the sake of it. But what’s wrong with a bit of silliness when you get to use pirate-themed chat up lines on the ladies for at least one day of the year? Although they missed a trick by omitting "How d’ye fancy a jolly-rogering, me hearty?"

Hector Serrano’s Superpattata light is super at almost everything

By admin on September 18th, 2007

Hector Serrano is a Spanish conceptual designer based in London, who has recently come to light for his series of innovative, practical but aesthetically pleasing homeware. Hector manages to create gorgeous looking household goods that economise on space but maximise function, usually by combining the elements of two items into one object.

Take the Bin Step, which, as the name suggests, is both a trash can and pair of steps for reaching that last tin of Spaggetios at the back of the cupboard. I smacked myself in the head when I saw them – The design is so obvious that I, in my infinite genius, should have come up with it.

My favourite piece from Hector is the Superpattata (pictured) and it’s not just because of the name. These light-emitting forms act as nightlights, pillows and bed warmers and are designed to be stacked upon each other to create a tower of lights. I think they’re just perfect for chucking around the living room and creating a warming ambiance. Check out Hector’s website for the full story on his goods.

Beckham in the buff once again, selling the Motorola Razr 2

By admin on September 17th, 2007

What’s the deal with Beckham getting his kit off for every advert he does? I can understand him donning his birthday suit to avoid splodging Gillette shaving gel all over his L.A. Galaxy jersey, and you can’t promote undies without first whipping your trousers off. But does he really need to get nekkid to sell mobile phones?

I’m sure there is a demographic of those who make calls in the buff (weirdos), but it’s not par for the course is it? Motorola, however, seem to think it is, with their new campaign featuring Becks pushing the Razr 2, sans clothes.

Then again, I also need to address my blatant hypocrisy. Motorola are in the same camp as Samsung and LG, using mobile-brandishing, bikini-clad ladies to promote their product at trade shows and such. It’s not like I have anything to say about that. No, I’m usually too busy staring…

Hirsute men from around the world gathered for the bi-annual World Beard and Moustache Championships on Saturday, held for the first time in Britain since its inception in 1990, with the UK taking top honours in three events.
