Crocs get all shirty with new material designed for clothing

By admin on August 29th, 2007

Crocs, the company notorious for making those rubber shoes that vegetarians and middle-class yummy mummies seem to be fond of, have turned their attentions to making shirts. Thankfully its not the sort of shirt that you’d necessarily wear to torture garden, being made out of a completely different material to the footwear. I bet you filthy lot are disappointed now, eh?

The Croslite RT shirt is manufactured in a light-weight fabric that is, like the chunky shoes that preceded it, sweat-resistant and thus repels nasty odours, making it perfect for outdoor activities. Or, now I come to think about it,  dancing to bangin’ techo in a fetish club. Looks like I was wrong after all…

Tom Ford’s new fragrance for Men gets a sexed-up launch

By Isabelle on August 24th, 2007

There’s a fine line between sexpot and sex pest and Tom Ford seems to have made a career out of it. Tom Ford for Men, his latest fragrance was launched with an ad campaign shot by uber perve Terry Richardson and if you thought it couldn’t get any more risqué that a G shaved into pubic hair think again. As well as the pictures above the ad campaign also features a picture of a naked woman with an oversized bottle of the fragrance between her thighs… Classy.

Joachim Löw, the indiest football coach around?

By Isabelle on August 24th, 2007

The Guardian this morning likened German coach Joachim Löw’s look to that of a Libertines tribute band member. I think they may have taken it a bit far but it’s true that he has something of the indie about him.
In his white shirt and silk scarf he kind of looks like the type of older guy you see in indie clubs, lurking in the shadows while the kids throw shapes on the dancefloor. Especially with that hair, I mean it’s a pretty standard indie-boy haircut and it really completes the subtle "friend of Jarvis" look. I wonder how many more trendsetting men we’re going to see in the world of football as the season kicks off?

USC to invest 4 million in menswear

By Isabelle on August 22nd, 2007

Good news for menswear, fashion retailer USC is getting a £4 million investment to expand its men’s ranges.  "We strongly believe there is a gap in
the menswear market and we’re looking to fill it with the UK roll-out
of the USC concept we’re implementing initially in Nottingham," said Jo
Bohling, UK brand director for USC. The company have suffered severe loses recently so this might be the change of direction they need to get back on track. The aim is to turn the stores into male concept stores with a wide variety of brand names available to customers. The high street definitely needs to step up its menswear retailing so hopefully USC will herald a bit of healthy competition amongst the big chains.

Uniqlo serves up a heaping slice of denim

By Isabelle on August 16th, 2007

There’s been a big fuss made about Uniqlo recently, and there’s even more of a kerfuffle thanks to their new denim range. Reasonably priced the range comes in a variety of fits and washes. I’m loving the slim fit straight jeans in grey (£24.99) and the deep indigo selvedge regular fit jeans (£39.99).

I can see what the fuss is about, you don’t usually get these cuts and colours for these prices, I’ve already picked out a couple of the women’s pairs that are making it onto my wishlist.

Pharrell sports awesome t-shirt at Superbad premier

By admin on August 16th, 2007

Spotted Pharrel Williams wearing this super sweet tee at the Superbad premier (makes it sound as though I was there) and I instantly fell in love with it – the tee, not Pharrell. While he should have swapped the shorts for something a bit more formal and completely lost the hat, I can’t fault the shirt or his baby-blue kicks. The problem is, I can’t for the life of me find out where they’re from. The tee looks like it could be from his The Billionaire Boys Club/Ice Cream range but, alas, twas not there. Anyone out there have an idea?

CECT W100 wrist phone

By admin on August 16th, 2007

Just like the concepts of flying cars zooming through the sky or hand-held lasers that can stun a perp at 100 paces, the idea of a wrist mounted communication device has been just that – an idea. The reality is that "flying" cars can barely get off the ground, "hand-held" lasers need to be coasted around on trolleys and wrist-phones have been either hand-achingly cumbersome or severely lacking in quality and features. How much longer do we have to wait for the future? I expected moon-bases by now!

In regards to the issue of wrist-phones, the wait may be over soon. Qiao Xing Mobile Communication has unveiled the CECT W100 watch-phone which, despite actually being wrist sized, is jam-packed full of all the features you’d expect from todays "bricks". 1GB memory, FM radio, bluetooth, a 1.3 mega pixel camera and audio/video capabilities are all included in this tiny package. However, the clincher for me is that the phone has a built in touch-screen. Move over iPhone.

The future is here. The future is now… although I am still waiting for my Porsche Carrera GT with vertical takeoff.

Blairbrushing: Tony Blair on the cover of Men’s Vogue

By Isabelle on August 13th, 2007

don’t doubt for a minute that we haven’t seen the end of airbrushing
but I was surprised to see Tony Blair on the cover of Men’s Vogue
looking so… smooth. Now they didn’t do a Redbook
on him by any means but he definitely looks a little soft focus. The
picture on the left shows that he actually bears more resemblance to political cartoonist Steve Bell’s depiction of him than the Vogue cover.
Calling him "The man who made Britannia cool" (mmm… change cool for
"a terrorist target" and you’re almost there!) Vogue followed him on
his farewell tour around Africa in May. The photograph itself was shot
by recent Condé Nast signing Norman Jean Roy who is known for his
flattering image-making.

Peterborough man threatened with fine over bad t-shirt

By Isabelle on August 13th, 2007

August is traditionally silly season for news, and this is by far the silliest story I’ve seen. Peterborough street wardens told David Pratt as he sat at a bus stop with his wife that his t-shirt could cause offence or incite violence. The offending item bore the slogan: "Don’t piss me off! I am running out of places to hide the bodies."  "I really don’t see how the wording on my T-shirt could incite violence – it’s humour, that’s all it is," said Mr Pratt who is seeking an apology. Peterborough City Council said: "The
incident is the subject of an official complaint to the council and is
currently under investigation."
The t-shirt reminds me of something you’d find in Magz from Saxondale’s "Smash the System" anarchic t-shirt shop. I actually find the typeface more offensive than the wording but that’s me.

Mary Portas tackles menswear for a new series of Mary Queen of Shops

By Isabelle on August 9th, 2007

Mary Portas is back for a second series of her
hit tv show "Mary Queen of Shops" and this time she’s tackling
menswear. She said: "The core middle market for men is very hard. How
many solo menswear shops do you see on the high street?" Portas is
known for transforming Harvey Nichols and turning it into a vital
fashion retailer and on the last series worked her magic on four
independent boutiques using rebranding, window-dressing and stock
revamps to improve sales. Menswear is a much more difficult market than womenswear as Portas makes clear: "It’s very hard to build a complete men’s retail brand on its own". She is looking for struggling fashion
boutiques to take part in this new series which she describes as not "a
makeover show; we’re giving them real business guidance" If you think
you fit the bill send an email to

Hardy Amies’ ABC of Fashion reissued

By Isabelle on August 1st, 2007

One of our Shiny Media writers professed to bidding up to £80 on eBay for this book, before being outbid which shows you what an essential it is. Thank heavens for the reissue of this classic, or rather thank the V&A, which is reissuing the book as part of its Golden Age of Couture exhibition for the rather more affordable sum of  £9.99. Featuring a new introduction by Ian Garlant the current creative director of the Hardy Amies label it goes through the A to Z of fashion from blazers and brogues to skiing and sandals. This witty guide is a great buy if you want to start making more educated decisions about your sartorial purchases, even the cover is an exercise in style.

French Connection autumn 2007 collection

By admin on July 31st, 2007

Call me ignorant, but does "summer fashion" really apply to men? Whereas women get all sorts of colourful dresses, tops, skirts etc., blokes are lumbered with shorts and t-shirts. It’s not really fair is it?

It’s why I love autumn/winter collections – there’s a lot more to choose from, simply because the colder months need more clothes to keep you warm. So you can understand my excitement when French Connection launched their new autumn range this week. It means there’s a whole new range of jackets, jumpers, shirts, trousers and a multitude of accessories to choose from.

Keep reading after the jump for my pick of five top items from FCUK new collection.

Star Wars: Darth Vader’s party hat revealed

By admin on July 27th, 2007

I suppose all that black does get a bit monotonous, doesn’t it? When he’s not crushing rebel scum or trying to convince Luke to join the Darkside, I’m sure Darth likes to kick back and slip into something more comfortable. Although I didn’t think that something would be as garishly camp as this. From the looks of their badass uniforms, the Empire usually has that totalitarian-chic thing going. Their designer must have been having an off day…

Taken from an exhibition at ComicCon 2007, this is one of several "artist’s interpretations" that saw the Sith lord’s noggin-wear rendered in various colours and materials. This interpretation presumes that Vader was a lover of Van Gogh. I always saw him as more of a Monet fan myself.
