135 Years of Jockey

By Laura on March 29th, 2011

Last week Brandish was invited to celebrate 135 years of Jockey Underwear, at an impressive international catwalk show. The show saw the brand go back to its roots, showcasing a number of heritage pieces from its original collection in 1879, before introducing some of Jockey’s more updated collections for A/W 2011.

GQ Editor Dylan Jones, hosted the night and provided the audience with product highlights from Jockey’s 135 history, from its beginnings with predecessor Samuel T Cooper and classic all-in-ones, to the space underwear created for NASA and the 3D Innovations collection of today.

The Models moved through different eras through in a highly choreographed show, that even featured dubstep at one point. The new collections that were revealed within the catwalk, included the latest USA Originals range, meant to encapsulate the ‘American Way of Life’, the Urban Luxury range and Countryside range, representing the North American outdoors.

Overall it was a great night and a really fun way to not only see how Jockey have grown as a brand, but how their product has really developed over the years. Trust me, I am glad no one is rocking the onesy anymore!

London Fashion Week – Acne Fall 2011 collection

By Laura on February 23rd, 2011

When Acne creative director Jonny Johansson was asked about the Men’s Fall 2011 collection he shrugged and stated “All the tailoring—I thought that was in the moment, something fresh. I’m tired of all this heritage, the older models or whatever. It’s time for something young.” Here at Brandish we completely agree!

The collection includes a series of overcoats paired with suit pants, as well as very sartorial two-piecers. With TV influences like Mad Men the suit is becoming increasingly popular amongst younger generations and it’s labels like Acne that they’ll turn to.

The collection over all is very youthful with slightly cropped pants and low-buttoning jackets in different styles all in Italian bonded wool. The pallet sees accents of raspberry, royal blue, or teal. Johansson stated that the clothing was made for “that moment when you’re not grown up and at the same time, not a kid. The kind of sexual energy that brings.”

Vans California Washed Pack

By Laura on February 23rd, 2011

The Vans California Washed Pack, were released this month as a part of their spring collection. Produced with a unique washed effect, they have that worn-in vintage look that usually only get after wearing your shoes into the ground. They are available in various styles including the Authentic Deacon CA and Slip-on Deacon CA in four colorways of stone washed canvas with desaturated tones and soft, comfortable uppers. While I realise not everyone likes the distressed look – these are going to look great as soon as the warmer weather hits.

This morning for the 10th consecutive season Irish designer, Paul Costelloe, kicked off London Fashion week with his very sophisticated yet colorful collection for Fall/Winter 2011.

Costelloe cites ‘home grown fashion’ as the inspiration for the collection. From Harris tweed from Scotland, luxury plaids and herringbones from Ireland, and beautiful bright cashmere wool from England, this collection is truly reflective of UK style.

The menswear collection saw a lot of round collared shirts, suave velvet burgundy blazers and a smattering of olive and khaki. Overall both the men’s and women’s collection has a simple yet chic 60/70s feel that is very wearable.

The Paul Costelloe collection was the perfect way to kick off fashion week. I can’t wait to see more!

30 Years Of i-D Magazine.

By ThomasHewetson on August 9th, 2010

thennownext.jpegOn August 12th we see the release of i-D magazine’s 30th birthday issue. Featuring covers with Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Lady Gaga famously only showing only one eye it’s set to be a great issue with a them of ‘now, then and next’.

“30 years – whoosh, more than an instant in i-D’s lifeline – it’s a generation. Three decades to be celebrated and contained in this special issue. The whole issue was created by Nick Knight 200 portraits that SHOWstudio made at the close of 2009 in Somerset House – once the home of British passports, now the central location for British Fashion Week. Nick’s celebration of identity was also a commemorative project inspired by the 5th birthday issue of i-D, where 100 portraits were featured in The Grown Up Issue. 25 years on, the gallery selection grew to 200. Happy birthday!”

Terry Jones, Editor-in-Chief, i-D

Founded by former Vogue art director Terry Jones in 1980, it’s come a long way since the first issue which was formed like a hand stapled fanzine. With a beautiful layout and it’s constant fascination with youth and the new, i-D remains as relevant as it ever has been. Outliving it’s competitors, the publication was required to scale back the amount of issues released a year from twelve to six last year, but with a loyal readership and constant reinvention including a fantastic new website i-D looks set to remain for some time yet.

These issues will be released on three separate dates:

THEN on sale 12 August
NOW on sale 23 September
NEXT on sale 11 November

iPad Release Date Announced.

By ThomasHewetson on May 11th, 2010

Apple have announced that the iPad will become available in Britain on the 28th of May and the 16GB WiFi model shall retail at £429. I was in New York a few weeks ago and played around with one in the Apple shop and it is actually amazing. It fills a space in your tech life which you didn’t know existed. It’s beautiful and the web browsing on it is better than a laptop. Still, it’s far too expensive over here for me to buy. Plus, clothes are a definite priority when it comes to spending money. Anyway, here’s a video which finds another use for an iPad.

Trend Transition… Eyebrow-Free Faces?!

By wreid on July 17th, 2009

eyebrows.jpgBack when she started out, Karen Elson had her eyebrows infamously off-ed at the suggestion of Steven Meisel. She catapulted to international fame fronting high-fashion campaigns and covers from W magazine to Italian Vogue. All this would suggest that the loss of one’s eyebrows is actually rather beneficial- a debate being started over on the Daily Mail website. In the latest Givenchy advert, model Adriana Lima shows off a pair of bleached brows and the Daily Mail is as always on the attack.

Unfortunately for my now traumatised retinas, the newspaper made up a few of Britain’s biggest stars without eyebrows (image above.) I’m not a fan; waking up without eyebrows would be one of my worst nightmares. I can understand that on someone staggeringly beautiful and Elson-esque, a lack of eyebrows would only increase allure. However, this is most definitely one trend I pray does not make the leap from womenswear to menswear. Let’s leave it to the models!

Esquire Singular Suit Project featuring Kim Jones, Jeremy Deller, Patrick Grant & Antony Gormley

By Isabelle OCarroll on July 16th, 2009

Esquire has brought together some of our favourite designers and our most art-throb artists for the Singular Suit Project which opens at Somerset House on July 31st.

Patrick Grant from Savile Row tailors Norton & Sons teamed up with one of our favourite artists, Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller to produce a US-style boilersuit which accumulates patches as mementoes of the wearer’s life. Richard James‘ sheer tailored suit takes inspiration from Spencer Tunick‘s mass nude photographs and just so happens to be bang on trend. Newly appointed Dunhill Director Kim Jones worked with Terence Koh on an-all white suit, with mixed-media embellishments which cracks and ages as it’s worn.

The full feature will appear in a special hardback edition of Esquire’s September issue out on Aug 6, in the meantime check out our thumbnail gallery featuring a selection of the designs.

Wireless: Daniel Merriweather vs Tinchy Stryder

By Isabelle OCarroll on July 6th, 2009

daniel merriweather tinchy stryder wireless.jpg

Displaying two very different menswear styles Daniel Merriweather and Tinchy Stryder put on their best togs for their appearances onstage at Wireless.

Daniel Merriweather, best known for his vocals on the Mark Ronson version of The Smiths’ ‘Stop Me’ opted for a tweedy jacket, shirt and tambourine, accessorised with a pair of aviator shades. Tinchy Stryder who recently acheived mainstream success with N-Dunz collaboration ‘Number One’ sported a t-shirt from his own ‘Star In The Hood’ range as well as a thick chain and Timex watch. Both very good efforts, and very different, hurrah!
