I know we are all a bit tired of weddings (thanks Will and Kate), but with the summer wedding season just kicking off, it is probably a good time to invest in a new tie to refresh that suit you wore last year. One of my favourite tie makers as of late has to be General Knot & Co.
The New England-based furnishings label has just released their new collection featuring chambray, plaid and floral prints. The vintage ties are handmade and use various fine fabrics and materials that date back as far as World War II. All ties are released as part of a one-time-only run, so you better move fast if you want to get your hands on one. Prices start at $78 USD (£47) and are available from their website General Knot & Co.

As we all know on Friday 11th March 2011 a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and destructive tsunami caused extensive and severe damage in Northeastern Japan leaving thousands of people confirmed dead, injured or missing and millions more affected by the lack of water, electricity and transportation.
Over the past few weeks we have seen people all over the world coming together to raise money through the sale of everything from cakes to posters. Hackett London is just one of the many brands who have also stepped up to try and raise money for those who have been affected, by launching a limited edition polo shirt.
All profits from the sale of these shirts is being donated to the Japan Society “Tohoku Earthquake Relief Fund”. The polo shirt has been designed with traditional Japanese embroidery of the cherry blossom which is an emblem of love and affection. The declaration of ‘Hope’ is embroidered on the polo in English and Japanese characters.
The cotton polo shirt is available in navy and white colourways for £49. You can purchase the shirt in Hackett stores worldwide and online from the end of April.

Check out this awesome vest from the Levi’s Lefty Jean collection. Headed up by Takahiro Miyashita and Kazuki Kuraishi, the pair have work together to produce something a little different for the more traditional denim brand. The Textile Vest has a Mexican blanket come flannel feel and is meant to be worn either alone or buttoned inside a Levi’s Trucker jacket as a liner. Personally I think it would look great paired with dark denim, a white waffle t-shirt and a pair of chukkas.

The past few weeks have seen snow shut down half the country, and unfortunately it is only the beginning of the cold weather. As you know, if you are going to keep warm at this time of year, its all about the layers. From thermals to snoods, they keep you staying warm and staying fashionable. A big trend so far this winter has undeniably been chunky knitwear. Whether it is a jumper or cardigan, some thick knitwear is a great addition to any winter wardrobe. However, there is one style in particular that has lead the trend with both high street stores and premium designers – The Fair Isle knit.
The Fair Isle knitting is technique named after the tiny island of Fair Isle, north of Scotland, between the Shetland and Orkney islands. Traditional Fair Isle refers to any colour work knitting using 2 alternating colours and utilises the traditional patterns of the Shetlands. The technique in recent years has been adapted by designers mixing traditional items and techniques with current trends and themes. However, they still remain true to the vintage and country inspired styles.
Fair Isle knits are a simple and classic way to bring colour and warmth to your winter wardrobe. Whats more, it is a trend that is sure to be around for at least another season, fitting well with the Urban Bohemian trend.
Rock the Fair Isle knits with dark washed jeans, military boots, a chunky scarf and camel trench coat to be right on trend. As things warm up in the spring, pair your sweater with rolled up chinos and boat shoes.

When the weather is muggy and you face regular drenchings, the only thing to wear are items that keep you cool and don’t get ruined in the rain. A checked shirt in gorgeous Madras colours keeps the flag flying for summer, with long sleeves for those cooler moments. Pair with rugby shorts – yes really! This is a genuine trend I’ve spotted on the streets of East London recently and need only be worn with caution if you live anywhere near the hooray-Henry zones of SW London. The shape is actually classic and, when not worn with sportswear, can look surprisingly stylish.

With sales in full swing and the heat here to stay, now is the time to put together an outfit for those balmy evenings when you want to turn heads during your evening ‘paseo’. A mix of high street and simple staples pulls together current menswear trends without trying too hard. First up, this very fun sailor hat from Topman, with authentic braiding detail. With such quirky headgear best to keep the rest low key, hence the simple tank (buy a size up) and black cuffed shorts. The mix of brown shoes with black clothing is very 2009 and these battered-looking Oxfords would look great matched with cotton socks in a soft pastel shade, like a cream or lemon.
This is an easy look that works equally well whether you are tearing up a beach-side disco or enjoying cocktail hour amidst white stucco.

There’s a lot of great summer items out there on the high street, even without the sales. Topman in particular are doing much to replace the label’s history of sweatshop man-made horrors with on trend items in natural fabrics. But first up is Uniqlo, these pink washed chinos are very Hamptons, an easy shape to wear in a brave colour. Button down shirts and denim continue to be trends in shirting and Topman combine both in one lovely, slender shirt. Their Liberty-print floral bow tie would be a great contrast and is a keeper. Finally, how nice are these patent grey sandals? Sadly sold out online, hit the stores (especially if you can reach one out of town) to nab a pair.

Its Fleet Week in New York this week, when the City is awash with sailors in full navy regalia whose ships have docked there for the annual celebration. As I witnessed last year, this can be quite a visual spectacle. The uniforms haven’t changed since the days of Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra’s ‘On the Town‘ and the sight of lots of broad-shouldered men in the whitest of whites set against that most urban of city backdrops is quite something.
So, in an homage to Fleet Week and it’s dapper men, here’s a selection of matelot inspired items.

Right kids it’s time to lower the tone with some sneaker news: the universally beloved Air Max 1 OG is back for another innings at Overkill. The Air Max 1 was first released in this original colourway back in 1987 and has periodically been re-released to rapturous hype every time. The AM1 OG has since gone down as one of the most loved colourways of one of the most loved trainer of all time making a real, but accessible collectors item.
This time the Max is slated for release the end of June just as the summer should really be kicking in so why not team a pair with some skinny faded Cheap Mondays from Urban Outfitters and a colourful SS-Tee from American Apparel. Sorted.

When my English teacher announced we would be studying ‘A Streetcar Named Desire,’ I have to admit to a light leap of the heart as I reminisced on John Galliano‘s ‘Blanche DuBois’ collection of 1988 and Marlon Brando in all his retro glory; oozing sex appeal and hard-edged fashion prowess. With these thoughts in mind, and a bit of time spent re-watching the iconic film made in 1951, I set about creating an outfit based on the look of Stanley Kowalski.
I’ve mixed a pair of amazing chino/casual-esque trousers with a bit of a vintage feel and a thin leather belt from with a basic tee from Topman and a pair of roughed up plimsolls from New Look. This is simple and seemingly effortless but the look as a whole is incredibly effective at turning you into a rugged, alpha-male icon. Now, with the fashion bit past, can anyone do a good New Orleans accent?

Ville, snapped by the Hel Looks team, has a stylish, easygoing look we love. A pair of skinny jeans and white hi-tops make up quite a basic outfit, but the addition of a pastel knit scarf gives the ensemble a feminine slant and is perfect for spring.
The grey trench adds to the delicate feel and the slouchy shape contrasts nicely with the slim silhouette.

Topman have a new mini-collection on their online shop and the look is ‘Chelsea Arts Club.’ The high street label (beloved by the Brandish team,) tells that “this smart trend is influenced by a sophisticated age where actors, artists and sartorialists mixed in exclusive members clubs…the overall look is quirky.” For me, this translates as unusual textures, subtle details and wow-factor tailoring. My fashspirational men are Bob Dylan, Gregory Corso and Pablo Picasso; men who looked effortlessly awesome in rolled-up trousers and paint-stained tees.
Why not buy basic items from Topman and try your hand at home-made accessories? Prepare yourself for beads on string, paperclip tie bars and old woman’s brooches pinned into buttonholes.
Pick up a Murakami novel, write a poem and carry a wicker basket- this summer is all about your inner artist!

Proving that you don’t need to go for mundane colours in a smart outfit, this young gent is sporting a fantastic khaki suit. It runs the risk of looking a little drab but thanks to some clever combinations of colour he’s managed to turn it into something a little special.
A cranberry-coloured cardigan contrasts nicely, and the faux-tortoiseshell buttons match the suit to bring it all together. The real star of the show is the baby pink shirt, a white shirt might have killed this look, but the imperceptibly rose shirt gently underlines the point made by the cardigan.
