Get the look: Sea of Shoes’ slouchy Japanese androgyne

By cchapman on July 2nd, 2009

DSC_1694.jpgPerhaps best known for making us all sick with her seemingly inexhaustible spending power and ability to travel the world at will, teen blogger Sea of Shoes occasionally turns up a stunning male fashion image on her way. I love this image of the young Japanese hipster, something about the worn insouciance of his outfit which looks designer but is probably a collection of vintage/well loved items. Of course, his girly frame might not be what one can aspire to/or desire but the mix of slouchy, black faded jersey and killer boots is one that could translate well into something more rugged.

My first thought when trying to assemble a similar look was Rick Owens. But with OkiNi Rick Owens stock (at least in black) thin on the ground, American Apparel present a much more affordable alternative. Their slim jersey pants and a short sleeved hooded T are definitely on the mark. Leaving you cash to splash on some killer boots like Paul Smith’s orientalist Kasmin boots or try vintage stores for something slouchy in brown.

Say hello and wave online: Buckstyle.com and The Rake

By Colin Chapman on May 15th, 2009

rake-03-cover-gc.jpg
These are difficult days for glossy fash magazines. So with that in mind, here’s a mag you may not be aware of yet and a favourite that’s recently evolved into an online zine.

The Rake is a new men’s glossy, launched recently straight out of Singapore. As if the Dutch publishing hotbed established by Fantastic Man and Butt magazines hadn’t thrown us enough of a geographic curveball, here comes a classy mag out of one of Asia’s most famous shopping meccas (but one not previously noted for a cerebral take on fashion).

Not dissimilar to Fantastic Man, in its pursuit of sartorial elegance and a certain timeless, gentlemanly aesthetic, The Rake enters the market at a difficult time but with quite a special voice. Read A Continuous Lean‘s interview with Rake editor Christian Barker here.

Stately homo: time for some eccentric grandad chic

By Colin Chapman on May 13th, 2009

grandad_chic.jpgHaving lost not inconsiderable time exploring in blogworld this morning, if there’s one thing I’ve learnt – thanks to Mister Mort – it’s that old guys have the best style, and young guys wearing old guy style have all the best fun. Here’s a fun collection of items to give you that gentlemanly, eccentric beyond your years appeal.

You may think I’m a little crazy in recommending tweed at this time of year, but the tweed is in the detail here and a tie shouldn’t make you sweat.

Brandish Alumni Jason Dike Writes for Selectism- Column Madness!

By Will Reid on March 5th, 2009

jason.jpgFlicking over my most frequented pages recently, I came across Jason Dike’s column at Selectism. Jason was on the Brandish team when I first started out over a year ago but sadly he left last September, leaving us all awfully down-in-the-dumps.

However, Jason is now writing a brilliant column for the equally brilliant Selectism and we can’t wait to see more of his stuff!

Doylesays: Buck’s editor/publisher starts a blog

By Colin Chapman on January 23rd, 2009

buck_Steve_Doyle.jpg

Launched on the back of the latest updates over at Buckstyle.com, (the online face of top newish men’s mag, Buck) is a new blog by Buck’s publisher/editor Steve Doyle. Something of an enigma, little is known about Mr Doyle other than he’s not only editor of Buck but also its publisher having been inspired to create the magazine of his dreams during his time spent living in Japan.

The latter experience is already bearing fruit as Doyle explains the origins of a key accessory from Christopher Bailey’s latest Burberry Prorsum men’s collection: the Japanese knitted cummerbund. The blog’s other stated purpose is to give us the lowdown on his experience of setting up Buck, or in his words ‘the complete randomness of publishing a magazine’. Given the warm reception (and impressive distribution) of Buck to date, Mr Doyle’s blog promises to be interesting.

Hey! Don’t think for one minute that I’m agreeing about the lack of menswear at LFW and the general confusion at the amount of fashion weeks (ahem!), but you should go and take a look at the rest of Sunday Best‘s most recent ‘One Leg at a Time’ cartoon. It’s pure teh fashion lolz.
On an admin tip, Man About Town magazine has the best fashion events calendar in their latest issue. It’s so useful I might even get it tattoed on one of my bumcheeks in a Reverend Peter Mullen-style protest.

Tavi Tells The Truth: A Man And His Gold Coat

By Will Reid on October 3rd, 2008

goldjacket.jpgTavi, the girl-wonder-blogger with a fashion sense so incredibly brilliant I feel like crying when I ‘m reading her blog, has found this picture and decided that she wants to marry the wearer of this great, gold jacket.

I’m okay with just being his friend but it is an undoubtedly fantastic image.

Now, the only question is where to find that jacket.
