007 Fragrance: The smell’s Bond, James Bond

By Gerald Lynch on July 30th, 2012

Fancy smelling like James Bond? No, it’s not some clever olfactory disguise devised by the inimitable Q, but rather a new men’s aftershave called 007 from P&G launching exclusively online and in-store at Harrods from 15th August 2012.

Harking back to the Fougere perfumes of the 1960s (arguably the first “hero scent” range for men), the 007 Fragrance “flawlessly combines irresistible sophistication with uncompromising masculinity [...]culminating in a robust signature scent which embodies the duality of Bond.”

Ingredients include the strong vetyver, blended with lavender and apple, all packed in a glass flacon bottle as sleek as some of Bond’s motors.

“It has been an exciting experience coming together and working with P&G to create the debut James Bond fragrance,” said Keith Snelgrove, global business director of James Bond’s production house EON.

“This is a special year for 007, and we are thrilled to launch this distinctive and sophisticated scent during Bond’s 50th anniversary year.”

Expect to pay £32 for 75ml bottle and £42 foe a 125ml bottle.

Brad Pitt, male, is new face of ladies’ Chanel No. 5 perfume

By Gerald Lynch on May 9th, 2012

Marilyn Monroe, Nicole Kidman and Audrey Tautou. What do they all have in common? Well for starters, they’re all women. Obvious one that. And all beautiful. No points for spotting that one either. But, however, they’ve all also been at one point or other in their careers the face of Chanel No. 5 perfume.

Well, as of today, you can now add Brad Pitt to that list of celebs who’ve attached their faces to the most famous of ladies’ scents.

The thing is, Brad’s harbouring a deep, dark secret. Underneath those wavy blonde locks, piercing blue eyes and striking features, the Se7en and Benjamin Button star  is…actually a man!

That certainly sets Mr Angelina Jolie apart from his predecessors, and marks a bold new direction from Chanel’s marketing department.

Confirming the news in a press release today after rumours began circulating yesterday, Pitt is the first male face of the iconic perfume. A full blown ad campaign including a UK TV advertising spot is to follow in the Autumn, with Pitt picking up a cheque with a tidy seven-figure sum inked onto it.

Though Pitt’s the quintessential ladies-man and multi-generation spanning heatthrob, the 48-year old is still an odd choice by the brand, leading some to speculate that sultry Jolie may be making an appearance in the campaign at some point too.

“Hang on, aint this a site about men’s stuff, guvnor? What’s this gotta do with us blokes?” I hear you cry!

And you’d be right. With Pitt being the kind of guy that women want to be with and men want to be, there’s plenty of speculation that Pitt’s appearance with Chanel could be the start of a massive push from the brand into the male sector.

Come Christmas, you and your missus both could be unwrapping a bottle of scent sold by Pitt’s lovely mug.

Fantastic Man cologne: we get a sniff

By Colin Chapman on May 8th, 2009

Fantastic_Man_Cologne.jpgI reported on Fantastic Man‘s collaboration with Swedish perfumer Byredo back in March, and thanks to Isabelle, I’ve now got my hands on it. The packaging is predictably gorgeous: minimalist white with black details and a very old-school paper seal that establishes the feeling you are receiving something really special. It’s the fragrance equivalent of opening a product by Apple.

Having had 24 hours to spray, dab and generally test the olfactory sensitivities of friends and family, I can report that: I love it! Initially a little floral, over time its the Patchouli note that comes out strongest, softened by powdery Bergamot and peppery Cardamom. Rather than reminding you of an afternoon at Camden Market, the Patchouli effect is one of well-travelled luxury, in a bohemian, Ibiza in the ’70s way (think louche movie Savage Grace). A perfect fragrance then for summer.

Keep your eyes peeled for availability in stores, or buy online here.

Fantastic Man X Byredo, the new scent for summer?

By Colin Chapman on March 19th, 2009

fantasticManCologne.jpg
As if creating an amazing magazine wasn’t enough, the talented team behind Dutch-based Fantastic Man have teamed up with Swedish scent makers Byredo to release their own self-named cologne. The scent was launched exclusively at Colette in Paris on March 9th. It’s debatable whether the cologne could ever smell as delicious as the magazine itself (or is that just me?) which is printed on the most sublime high-grade paper although given the impeccable taste of the magazine expectations are high.

The all star roll call of ingredients (or should that be ‘notes’ in parfumier speak?) certainly sounds promising: Bergamot, Star Anise, Cardamom, Geranium, Incense, Lavender, Vetyver, Moss and Patchouli. I’m taking bets that Dover Street Market will be the London stockists being the nearest thing we have to Colette. Keep your eyes peeled and nostrils, um, flared?

Stopping over in Paris on the way back from my hols, I paid a visit to Colette and excitingly had a quick sniff; it’s a great clean citrus smell perfectly balanced with musk. Can’t wait to have a proper smell when it reaches our British shores! -Ed.

Burberry fragrance for men- like rubbing Phillip Schofield all over

By Jonathan Smith on February 20th, 2009

burberry_london_men.jpg

Firstly let me confess my prejudices: I freaking love Burberry. I love Burberry for it’s class and excellence but more than that I love Burberry for its brash and obnoxious reputation bestowed upon it by council estates across the nation. No other brand can you wear and say with equal validity “I’m 1st class on Eurostar to Paris at 8:55 so get me on my Blackberry.” and “You look at Stacey again ‘n I’ll smash your fuckin’ head in!” Which is why I went off the radar with excitement when Isabelle told me she was calling in Burberry for men for me to test drive.

For the sake of this post I will not be suspending my prejudice but will be practically encouraging it. This disclaimed please jump through and get yer eyes round this review chock full of angels vaginas and teenage pregnancy- because you’ll never guess how I shoe horned those into this write up…

Present Tense: last minute Christmas gifts

By admin on December 18th, 2008

Everyone is guilty of it, (well not everyone, I have a colour-coded Google Docs spreadsheet, natch!) but last-minute Christmas shopping can often leave you with gifts that have an air of desperation about them.
These picks have something for every wallet and they all carry an air of “What this? I bought this in November” insouciance. The Habitat lamp is a tasteful nudge for every Ikea junkie, and the watch will help the wearer get the ‘Sexy Cab Driver’ look which is going to be very important in ’09. A ‘To Do’ tattoo list is useful when compiling all those New Year’s resolutions, and all the more useful because they’re temporary. Resolution, what resolution?!

Brandish Christmas Picks: Comme Des Garçons – Synthetics

By Jonathan Smith on December 16th, 2008

comme-des-garcons-synthetics-series-6.jpg

Tis the season to buy fragrance but this year I’m looking for something a little more leftfield than Lynx shower gel, I want the Comme Des Garçons – Synthetics line. If you hadn’t heard and to be fair I hadn’t, this is series six in a line of fragrances from CDG each with their own theme. This line is split down into 5 very unique fragrances based around the idea of synthetic smells, available from Lucky Scent at $60 for a 75ml bottle and $3 for a tester.

Unlike my other Christmas picks all of which I greatly desire, this is probably the only one I have any intention of requesting for myself because I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to scent and this has really piqued my interest, if it has piqued yours then jump through to read what Lucky Scent has to say about the line.

AskMen.com Gives Us “Shaving Tips From Moroccan Street Shavers”

By Will Reid on December 9th, 2008

271083256_403c0ee266.jpgAskMen.com has recently proved to be a good source of interesting and insightful fashion features (at least once you’ve clicked through such literary gems as “Is a 3-some really worth it?” and an “Is Britney actually Hot?” poll.) A look at their Fashion section resulted in me reading a great article by P.A Parfond, the site’s weekly fashion correspondent, entitled “Shaving Tips From Moroccan Street Shavers.”

The feature is a look at the tips of three different barbers from within Morocco and Parfond reveals that the reason Moroccan barbers are the best shaver in the world is because “Moroccan street shavers hold the secrets to the perfect shave, no matter who the recipient…for them, shaving is an ancient art, one bound by rules and techniques that men growing up in the West are rarely introduced to.”

Check out the different tips by following this link.

L’Occitan eau de toilette

By admin on October 21st, 2008

l occitane l occitan provence eau de toilette.jpg

L’Occitane‘s (pronounced OK-SI-TAN) eau de toilette for men is supposed to be the distillation of Provence in the south-west of France, where the company is founded.

On the first spritz L’Occitan hits you with immediate top notes of black pepper that conceal citrus and resinous elements. Provence is ever-present in the pine and mentholated lavender middle notes which give it an old-timey medical feel. It loses its bite somewhat as the gritty black pepper gives way to muskier softer smells with a hint of honey.

Usually prefer a more persistent scent but it’s a very effective eau de toilette and leaves a subtle aura of scent which isn’t overpowering or chemical. On the whole I like it and I would wear this myself, it would be perfect for adding a bit of texture and depth to my Paul Smith Rose perfume.

By Will Reid on August 5th, 2008

korres.jpg“Oh golly gosh- that looks like it may be over 100ml. Oops for you!” *Grab* “Now, do you know how to reschedule a flight?” I’d like to say that the dragon-lady at Gatwick had spoiled my day by treating me like a dumb blonde (brunette guy by the way!) but it was truly ruined when she took my new Korres products.

The Ginseng Facial Fluid and Ruscus and Chestnut Eye Cream are two amazing products combining natural ingredients with that all improtant dermatological testing for an intense cosmetic experience.

WISHLIST: Prada Lifestyle Sets

By Will Reid on June 16th, 2008

prada.jpgWhile most men opt for the safe bet of ties, socks and other traditional Father’s Day gifts, I have always wanted to get something better. I spend weeks and months searching for something perfect in its masculine luxury, but when your dad works for Tesco’s your options are sadly limited. As a result, I often end up presentless and apologetic by the Third Sunday of June (like today, for instance.)

I was a fan of Isabelle’s ‘Caviar’ ties but only this afternoon (how horrendously cruel is that?) found these Prada Lifestlye sets.

Cards, Shoe Shining, Airline Comfort Kits- check out all these great belated gift options at prada.com

Thierry Mugler Angel Men Pure Coffee scent out soon

By admin on April 9th, 2008

AngelMEN_PURE COFFEE_Visual-thumb.jpg

Zara at Kiss and Make Up is sounding off about the new Thierry Mugler Angel Men perfume, she wants in on the male scent, which is out on April 14th.

I must admit I’m not one of those women who ever bought the female fragrance, it was always a bit too sweet and cloying for my tastes but apparently the new Pure Coffee fragrance for men is a lot more manly. It’s a blend of coffee, musk cedar wood and milk which sounds a hell of a lot more appealing than the classic female scent and will probably be a great pick-me-up.
