‘Man Alive’- Style Magazine, Sunday 16 March
When I opened Sunday Times Style’s latest male issue, I came upon a great editorial called ‘Man Alive.’ It focuses on shoes and suits but the contents are elevated by Lucy Ewing’s styling and Paul Bliss’ photography.
Among an issue containing Kate Moss semi-naked on a beach and Clive Owen in semi-shadow, it is testament to its brilliance that the editorial made the front cover of the magazine. Particular highlights included the ginger model leaping excitedly in the air. Clothing ranges from Giorgio Armani to Miu Miu and the models have been picked to represent different types of people.
You Would If You Could… The Awkward Lengths
The next look to make our list is the awkward length. This was a hard one to put into this feature as some do manage to pull it off but not everyone is Terence Koh and it only took a look at the local fashionisto’s crash and burn outfit of Kris van Assche-style combat with tight tee to know that this was one to be hastily put down.
So where did it all go wrong? When did the matronliness of Britain extend to Dolce & Gabbana jodhpurs and McQueen knits? At D&G, trousers were either tucked into boots or (sharp intake of breath) fitted with elasticated hems- yes, the same fabric responsible for the horrific Rocky Balboa-tracksuit/pantaloon ankle. McQueen went for his usual unwearable but exquisite fashions and approached this trend with a blend of Alpaca knit and Spanish embroidery. Some celebs have tried to wear this look but unless you are an artist/indie fashion editor/musician/girlfriend of Irina Lazareanu-type, it’s best to stay away. For those of you willing to take on the challenge and prove me wrong- take a look at this Rick Owens thigh-length top from Brown’s.
Everyday Fashion Miracles: The Sartorialist
I know that it is an obvious choice and not avant-garde in the slightest, but The Sartorialist is one of those gems that just makes you smile. Increasingly, Scott (Mr. Sartorialist himself) Schuman is incorporating more and more menswear into his revolutionary blogging venture. The photos within this post (all property of The Sartorialist) are just a few of Scott’s archive of great shots. Street-style is a major influence within the fashion world right now and everyone from Henry Holland to Ricardo Tisci at Givenchy are taking inspiration from the World’s various street-walkers (no naughtiness there.) Also, despite the location of these shots usually being fashion shows and parties, most of the looks are wearable and Scott makes sure to interview his subjects, getting information on suit sources and blazer bargains. Take a look for yourself and help me spread the fashion virus throughout the Globe (God knows some people need it.)
See after the jump for more examples of Mr. Schuman’s fantastic stuff.
Sale: Dries Van Noten suit

We’re all going to need a suit at some
point in our lives, so why not get one on sale? Dries Van Noten are
a brand we’ve featured before and for good reason. Suits in general are pretty
timeless, unless you get one with skulls on it or something, so you’re safe in
the knowledge that they’ll never be out of season. DVN suits are tailored impeccably, leading to
a very flattering fit.
The dark grey colouring allows it to be
worn in a casual manner with a pair of Nanny states if need be, whilst still
being smart enough to wear to the office. Available from Browns, the sale cost is £285, down
£280 from £565.
Top present picks for men from Catwalk Queen
Take a look at Gemma and I sat on the couch at Shiny Towers looking through a selection of gift ideas for men. They’re good for your brother or your bezzie, but frankly I think you just should treat yourself to one of these gift ideas because Christmas is usually disappointing enough!
Check out Kat and Stu’s ipod jacket video for more details on this product, and also because the video is hilarious!
Martin Margiela Jacket

Ordinarily,
clothes that come lumped together are the height of laziness. Cardigans with
shirts attached are simply unnecessary and unpractical. What if you want to
undo the cardigan? Go bare chested? Then you’ll end up looking like a poor man’s
Magnum P.I. But Martin Margiela looks to
change this terrible trend with his jacket
with attached tie combo.
Although
that comment would normally fill anyone with fear, on this jacket they’ve added
the tie as a collar rather than sticking it on as an afterthought. This sets it
apart from any other combo item on the market. It’ll cost you a pretty pound
though, coming in at £680.
Dries Van Noten Suit

Although
you might try putting it off, at some point you’re gonna have to shell out on a
great suit. This Dries
Van Noten suit is made from 95% wool and 5% flashy cashmere; which means
you can look down on the cretins who only have wool suits and really look down on those who have
polyester suits. At Brandish we heartily promote suit snobbery.
The cost
for this feeling on superiority is £655, a great price considering the amount
of condescending looks you’ll be able to give out.
Topman olive cropped trench

Topman’s olive trench is a great colour to add a military feel to an outfit and the shade works well with other on-trend A/W colours like mustard, russet and grey. The cropped length makes it less fashiony than a full length trend and the nylon fabric gives a nod to the sporty trend. It’s £65 which makes it fairly reasonable for an investment purchase, layer with a hoodies and you can wear it all winter long.
Interpol looking good while bassist Carl Dengler stars in new movie

Carlos Dengler, bassist with New York indie oufit Interpol is set to
be a movie star after landing a role as a drug dealer in My Friends Told Me About You, a Chicago based thriller that Dengler will also be producing . Other than making great music, Interpol also have to be the snappiest dressers in the music biz at the moment, which is why I’m featuring them here.
I would have given that accolade to Rufus Wainwright, but lately he’s started to dress as if his wardrobe was inspired by a trip to DFS. And don’t get me started on Doherty. Two hats? Why? Just take a look at the picture above to see if you don’t just agree on how sharp these guys look.
