Emile Hirsch seems to have perfected the laid-back but oh-so-stylish celebrity look. Whether on his Another Man cover or at an early morning press conference, Hirsch is usually seen open-collared with a smile and noticeable lack of “gay guy” fake-tan.
At the European Premiere of Speed Racer, Hirsch turned up in a brilliant pin-stripe suit (possibly navy inspired?) and a relaxed shirt. There was no fussy detail or shiny shoes but instead, Hirsch went without jewellery and wore his hair as if he was attending a Sunday Starbucks. I guess it’s a shame then that the whole look was rained upon- literally.

First things first – why are the pictures on Yoox.com of such poor quality? They make Asos.com’s pictures look like a Rankin masterpiece. I wouldn’t usually complain about these things, but when it comes to this Dior Homme silver suit, you need high quality pictures to make a decision.
I’m in two minds about this suit, hence the yay or nay question. The first problem is the functionality of this piece. Unless you were an musician you would have nowhere to wear it to. It’s too flashy for work and too sharp for a casual night out. While it seems to be aiming to be worn by Kanye West, its closer to a Graham Norton outfit.
On the other hand, who cares about functionality? If you’ve established yourself as a leftfield dresser, you could easily wear this to work without anyone batting an eyelid. Well, they probably would bat an eyelid, but only because they were dazzled by the brilliance of your suit.
So what is it to be? Yay or Nay? Like a Beijing Olympics participant, I’m remaining firmly on the fence.

Just last night, the city of London was buzzing with the excitement of celebrity; that of the glorious Kate Hudson and heavily scent-sponsored Matthew McConaughey. Now I’m not going to lie and pretend that Mr. McConaughey isn’t one of my favourite actors because well, even I don’t get
that offended by sticking to the sartorial sidelines.
While Kate Hudson went all out in John Galliano, our male centre of attention decided to go for what I assume is a Dolce & Gabbana suit. I can’t fault the look itself- grey is in right now and the open-collar is a pleasing antidote to the stylised-Dandy of recent times. So full marks for style but what about effort? I can’t help feeling slightly miffed when someone with so much designer access neglects the right to riskier fashion.
But who am I to talk? I am sitting in my pyjamas at 1pm (Budapest time) with my just-recovered and now decidedly Hungarian laptop, moaning to myself about a lack of celebrity tailoring.

If you work in an office dominated by a smart casual dress code, you may find yourself actually wanting to wear a suit from time to time. For these people, Mad Men has become compulsive viewing. Not just because it’s a great show, but it harks back to a time when men actually wore all three pieces of their suit to work. Today’s average rucksack carrying, shirt and no tie wearing office worker could do with taking a few style tips from Don Draper (pictured left).

Gemma and I hot-footed it over to Old Street on Friday for the opening of Mr Start, Start Boutique menswear tailoring store. Mr Start is offering a made-to-measure tailoring service as well as a host of other labels including Peckham Rye. The shop itself is pretty stylish, combining traditional wood cabinets with industrial shelving and neon lighting.

If you’ve been inspired by Cheap Monday’s
Kotsym range but can’t wait until they decide to bring the collection into
stores, then you’ll love this Endovanera
cropped jacket. It has a fit similar to the Cheap Monday suit and is made
of 100% Pima cotton, which will make it a joy to wear. Well, as much of a joy
as wearing a suit can be. I’m not promising an orgasmic experience here.
Like any self respecting person, you’ll
avoid the light wash jeans/dark blazer jacket combo and instead opt for the

When I opened Sunday Times Style’s latest male issue, I came upon a great editorial called ‘Man Alive.’ It focuses on shoes and suits but the contents are elevated by Lucy Ewing’s styling and Paul Bliss’ photography.
Among an issue containing Kate Moss semi-naked on a beach and Clive Owen in semi-shadow, it is testament to its brilliance that the editorial made the front cover of the magazine. Particular highlights included the ginger model leaping excitedly in the air. Clothing ranges from Giorgio Armani to Miu Miu and the models have been picked to represent different types of people.

The next look to make our list is the awkward length. This was a hard one to put into this feature as some do manage to pull it off but not everyone is Terence Koh and it only took a look at the local fashionisto’s crash and burn outfit of Kris van Assche-style combat with tight tee to know that this was one to be hastily put down.
So where did it all go wrong? When did the matronliness of Britain extend to Dolce & Gabbana jodhpurs and McQueen knits? At D&G, trousers were either tucked into boots or (sharp intake of breath) fitted with elasticated hems- yes, the same fabric responsible for the horrific Rocky Balboa-tracksuit/pantaloon ankle. McQueen went for his usual unwearable but exquisite fashions and approached this trend with a blend of Alpaca knit and Spanish embroidery. Some celebs have tried to wear this look but unless you are an artist/indie fashion editor/musician/girlfriend of Irina Lazareanu-type, it’s best to stay away. For those of you willing to take on the challenge and prove me wrong- take a look at this Rick Owens thigh-length top from Brown’s.

I know that it is an obvious choice and not avant-garde in the slightest, but The Sartorialist is one of those gems that just makes you smile. Increasingly, Scott (Mr. Sartorialist himself) Schuman is incorporating more and more menswear into his revolutionary blogging venture. The photos within this post (all property of The Sartorialist) are just a few of Scott’s archive of great shots. Street-style is a major influence within the fashion world right now and everyone from Henry Holland to Ricardo Tisci at Givenchy are taking inspiration from the World’s various street-walkers (no naughtiness there.) Also, despite the location of these shots usually being fashion shows and parties, most of the looks are wearable and Scott makes sure to interview his subjects, getting information on suit sources and blazer bargains. Take a look for yourself and help me spread the fashion virus throughout the Globe (God knows some people need it.)

We’re all going to need a suit at some
point in our lives, so why not get one on sale? Dries Van Noten are
a brand we’ve featured before and for good reason. Suits in general are pretty
timeless, unless you get one with skulls on it or something, so you’re safe in
the knowledge that they’ll never be out of season. DVN suits are tailored impeccably, leading to
a very flattering fit.

If you need to make an impression for your
Christmas party, a one button suit may be the way to go. They’re sharp enough
to make you look like you’ve made an effort, but are still casual enough to
wear with a pair of trainers. This Ute Ploier suit is a
perfect example of what you should be looking for. The standout piece of this
outfit would be the trainers and it’s here where you need to get things right.
Whilst Chuck Taylors can look good with a suit,
they can also make you look like you dragged any old pair of trainers from the
back of your wardrobe. Nanny State’s patent
leather trainers go well with suits and smart attire in general, whilst
still looking like trainers.
