Brand Spotlight, features, sunglasses

A few weeks ago the guys over at Woodzee got in touch to tell us all about their beautiful handcrafted wood sunglasses.
We have seen a few wooden frames around recently and love the concept, but for the most part they have been vastly over priced. Woodzee, on the other hand have managed to maintain a high degree of quality, while at the same time making their glasses incredibly affordable, starting at just $85.
The 100% wood shades currently come in two different styles, Aviators and Wayfarers. Each pair is hand-made with either original bamboo, stained bamboo, Zebra wood, or Pear wood, making no one pair identical. To top it off, for those eco-conscious Woodzee will plant a tree for every pair of sunglasses sold.
We might be heading into winter, but I absolutely love these glasses and plan on picking up a pair next pay day.
Woodzee ship internationally and all styles are available for purchase here.

While on the subject of glasses, Parra’s Rockwell label recently teamed up with the Parisian eyewear brand Waiting For The Sun to give a new twist to their classic sunglasses.
Made from bamboo, the wooden frames come in a natural color, with red painted fronts and green arms.
They are available now for €120 in limited quantities from Moustache, and come with an accompanying scarf.

Oliver Peoples consistently impress me with their eyewear collections, and this latest is no different.
The company was founded in 1986 when opticians Larry and Dennis Leight opened an optical boutique on Sunset Boulevard, California. Earlier that year, they purchased an estate collection of vintage American-made eyewear. The assortment included thousands of beautifully filigreed rimless and metal frames, including clip-on metal sunglasses produced by iconic American companies, such as by Bausch & Lomb and American Optical. All the frames were unworn, in mint condition and in their original packaging.

The brothers purchased the entire lot, which included a receipt signed with the name “Oliver Peoples,” who they reasoned was the original owner or distributor. When they decided to sell the estate collection in their retail store, they decided to use this name in his honor.
Now years later, encouraged by loyal friends, family and customers Oliver Peoples founder Larry Leigh, has dug through his personal archive of original Oliver Peoples designs and decided to revive several iconic, brand-defining styles.

He believes, and I’m inclined to agree, that these classic styles is just as strong today as it was twenty years ago. Since very few originals still exist, and because it is essential that the same attention to detail, craftsmanship and the integrity of the original styles be retained, the brand reached out to the same Japanese factory to reproduce these designs in a limited run. The frames will be made available to select customers.

Last year it was Wayfarers. Everywhere. This summer, it will still be Wayfarers, Everywhere. They are just to easy to wear, suit more people than any other sunglasses, aren’t too flashy and are a design classic. However, the flat brow sunglasses are the way forward. The silhouette does bare resemblance to the Wayfarer on some models, but the nicest ones have a square frame. I do not believe in spending over £20 on sunglasses because I get through 3 pairs in the summer due to standing or sitting on them, yet these ones shown above are £165 and by A.M Eyewear and do claim to be shatterproof and are the nicest pair I’ve seen.

We’re all for giving, but how many times have you been out shopping for someone and bought something for yours truly?
Our Father’s Day gift guide is great if you want to give your dad a push in the right style direction, there’s nothing too out there or kooky, just a few pieces that will give a little panache to dear poppa’s wardrobe. Should the selection be too outlandish for pater then you might even want to snap up some of the items for yourself!

Ray-Bans were last year’s hit sunnies, but this year maybe try something a little more anonymous?
Next‘s orange sunglasses retail at £12, and despite the lack of branding still have a distinctive retro look. The orange frames look great with a tan and there’s a nice clash going on with the purple lenses. Mango’s pair (£23) are for the more classically minded, the tortoiseshell frame and old fashioned shape will go great with a ‘Talented Mr Ripley‘ style summer look.

Kris Van Assche, creative head of Dior Homme, and luxury sunglasses label Oliver Peoples have already put out successful collections of their collaborative designs but this week has seen the launch of the Spring/Summer 2009 collection.
The sunglasses for this season are still over-sized but thinner and sleeker than the thick-rimmed versions of previous seasons. Available in black, white and a divine tortoiseshell, these sunglasses (yet to be given a pricetag) are sure to feature on the WISHLIST of the entire Brandish team.

Marcello Mastroianni, the celebrated actor and style icon has a new posthumous string to his bow being the inspiration for Robert Geller’s line of eye glasses from his A/W 08 collection.
Being cool is no easy feat so give yourself a leg up the ladder of style with eye wear usually reserved only for dead Italian actors, but be quick because by the looks of things they are almost entirely pre-ordered up. Available for pre-order over at Blackbird.

I’m currently down in London, lapping up the (dubious) sunshine and attempting to dress in a way befitting of the cramped, and quite frankly torturous, morning tube journey. Turns out they’re not too pleased about being next to someone wearing a blazer with Margiela-esque shoulderpads. Basically, the heat is ridiculous and so yesterday I wondered into Convent Garden and bought some vintage sunglasses at Rokit.
