By admin on June 20th, 2008

They say facial beauty is all about symmetry, don’t they? In which case, these asymmetrical specs will be perfect for the remaining, ugly 95% of the population. They’re by Sugarkane, and the quirky frame isn’t all they have to recommend them.

Sugarkane ‘Occhiali’ asymmetric sunglasses

By admin on June 9th, 2008

sk_sunglasses.jpgWhat has already been covered in recent summer eyewear trends? Aviators? Check. Wayfarers (both authentic and McDonald’s Happy Meal inspired)? Check. The next in line might possibly be in the form of what I can only describe as a contemporary update on these “ubiquitous ’80s sunglasses“, seen on street punks and club kids everywhere in various NYC-set ’80s movies.

Despite giving you a permanently lopsided, squinty-looking face, the Occhiali asymmetric sunglasses from Italian eyewear designers Sugarkane have already graced the pages of Italian Vogue and Vanity Fair, boosting their chances of becoming a Shoreditch staple item in 2009.

The Occhiali’s do have at least one redeeming feature: the photochromatic lenses adjust from clear to tinted so you can wear them inside or out – which sounds fairly impressive to someone with 20/20 vision like myself, but to the optically challenged probably hasn’t been news since 1998.

These are for the kind of person who thinks Razorlight are the greatest band in the world, reads FHM and thinks that Kanye West geezer has some great tunes. If you’ve ever wanted to look out of touch with pop culture, then you can get these shutter shades from ASOS.

Monsoon’s Brisbane sunglasses vs American Apparel vintage

I always feel like an idiot when I wear sunglasses, so this summer I’m on the hunt for some sunnies that have a little je ne sais quoi without making me look like a you know what.
Monsoon’s Brisbane sunglasses (£18) are pretty cool, I like the way they sublty allude to the ’80s without the full-on twattish moronic references. Mind you if you are going to wear sunnies you may as well go the whole hog and have some fun right? American Apparel’s retro shades are £30, pretty hot and now I’m feeling a little confused.

It’s almost but not quite spring, which means it’s time to stock up on madras shirts, short shorts and sunglasses. Topman are on the case, they have launched a range of sunnies in conjunction with Linda Farrow called ‘The Classic Sunglasses’.
As well as Linda Farrow the four other guest designers this season are Bernard Wilhelm, Oliver Spencer, Kim Jones and 0044. You can’t currently get the Kim Jones ones online but fear not I have it on good authority (aka the Topman press office) that there will be a delivery next week .
