Check has undeniable appeal but right now it’s a little overexposed so stick to something with a little more longevity. Make like James Franco and go for gingham, it’s a little more dressed up than indie plaid and has classic appeal. Trust Franco, he appeared on the cover of the last issue of Man About Town; although I’m not so sure I’d follow his footwear having seen long shoes in this picture.

If you’re going to go for this season’s lumberjack trend you may as well jump right in and go for Topshop’s flannel plaid jacket (£60).
It’s lined in faux sheep which means it’ll be wonderfully cosy for the winter and will add bulk to your silhouette in a satisfying way, overly skinny is out now dontcha know? You could play it safe and team it with jeans but why not go for something different and wear the jacket with cuffed chinos and geeky Doc Marten style lace up shoes. Add some contrasting socks and it’ll set you apart from the swathes of men in check.

Who did Hotel Aime snap recently? None other than Fantastic Man‘s new Deputy Editor Charlie Porter, proving he is at the absolute vanguard of fashion by wearing polka dots. Dots, spots and specks are replacing stripes as the menswear print du jour and not a minute too soon!
For a Porter-esque look get Paul Smith’s shirt (£123), it looks like polka dots but closer inspection shows they’re actually diamond shapes, which are going to be the new polka dots in a couple of years. Probably.

British fashion she be a wild and confusing beast, luckily the BBC (and I mean the real BBC- voice of a nation the British Broadcasting Corporation) has created a website that carves up British Fashion into 5 manageable chunks. Surprisingly this guide is actually really good and though 5 sections may not seem like enough to cover the whole gamut of British fashion it has done the job quite nicely, linking many different styles together with cultural and social references.
Check out the BBC’s British Style Genius site and find out how your style is categorised by the good old Beeb.

This is a guy going by the name of Designerman, similar to the Sartorialist but at the same time oh so different. The difference comes in that where the Sartorialist is armed with a camera, Designerman is armed simply with some pencils and a sheet of sketch paper. His blog is filled with some really cool sketches of people wearing some really cool clothes, or perhaps just some pants.
Though obviously less detailed than photographs these sketches give you the essence of a look, which is a lot more adaptable and easier to tailor to your own image, also they give you a crazy backwards view into the process of fashion design: from sketch to garment and back to sketch again… Ooh postmodern and stuff!
Check out the site here and my faves after the jump.

The Kris Van Assche show was bound to attract some of the fash-pack’s best-dressing men and with the help of The Sartorialist, we need not fly to Paris to savour the front-row fashion savoir-faire.
These guys are both rocking fairly androgynous looks and as Isabelle mentioned earlier, it’s no secret that Doc Martens are the industry’s hot (but slowly cooling) item. I like the other man’s over-sized bag but what interests me the most is his headscarf. D&G featured Queen-chic headscarves on their runway last season and being of Scottish origin, I fail to not feel a slight home-sickness when faced with high-fashion previously seen in my gran’s wardrobe.
Fashion inspiration comes when you least expect it!

Plaid, tartan, check if you’ve paid any attention to the high street recently you’ll know the indie grunger lumberjack look is big news this autumn.
While I love a bit of check it’s definitely starting to feel a bit overexposed (this obviously excludes Burberry Jon!) so try polka dots, CDG used them in their collection for H&M and Henry Holland recently ditched the tartan for oversized dots for his latest catwalk show so you’ll be in good company.

So LFW has been and gone and I can concentrate on my Brandish readers once more. Andrea sent me an email a couple of weeks ago asking for clearer sartorial guidance (and praising Will’s outfit picks). Well we’ll never tell you what to wear on Brandish but Andrea has beef with brown: “I know black shouldn’t be worn with brown, but what are the appropriate colours to match it with?”
I vaguely remember Charlie Porter saying teaming brown and black was a fashion faux-pas in his great Guardian Weekend column a few years ago but I disagree. As long as the brown is a rich russety shade it will look great, think of the colours in tortoiseshell and you can’t go wrong.

I have a bit of an obsession with Waris Ahluwalia, the jewellery designer, actor and sometime Ben Cho collaborator.
Café Mode’s Géraldine snapped him looking amazingly turned out for the Ben Cho show in New York recently. It’s a happy coincidence but the dark grey background adds to the tonal mix of his outfit. I love the dun brown suit, and the contrast with the delicate floral pocket square. Research has shown that if you stare at a picture of a tree for long enough it lowers your heart rate, but I think in this instance you could happily substitute tree for Waris Ahluwalia.

It’s a simple look but Jaakko’s tonal outfit posted on Hel Looks a few days ago hits the fashion spot. Breaking up the monotony with a patterned scarf is a wise move and he shows that black and brown can be worn together (more about this soon) without incurring the wrath of the fashion gods. He namechecks Raf Simons, A.P.C and Surface to Air in his outfit rundown and on top of that he is rocking a pretty amazing moustache, bravo!

I know Casio watches are a bit ubiquitous nowadays but I’m still hankering after a gold Dual Time Casio for that sleazy uncle/skeezy factor. There’s something amazingly creepy about having two kinds of time on one watch, and I love it.
For a less tacky and more durable (in trend terms anyway) go for the the black resin strap version. It hides its ’80s retro geeky looks under a cloak of minimalist respectability fooling people into thinking it’s a plain old boring watch. Furthermore it does all of this for the utterly stupid price of £10.97, brilliant!

I received a very exciting email from Danish designer Rene Gurskov, who wanted to share with me his latest collection.
After taking some time to look at the clothes the words that spring to mind are thoughtful streetwear. The influences are trend-led without being too obvious and are wearable so that I could imagine even my most un-fashiony friends wearing the pieces. Gurskov says he wants to give even a “small town boy a chance to look hard boiled” which is a great description.

Forgive me for I have no idea who the man in this photograph is. His name is Chad Rogers and I like his shirt.
I suppose if I was dressing him I would have teamed the jeans with a khaki/brown belt to go with the check, I’m almost suspicious that his belt is made from horror of horrors… Plastic. Back to the positives, a mustard tie makes the outfit and elevates the plaid shirt from your everyday check to something a little more special. See Alex James’ Ascot look for tie-spiration.

Email me at isabelle [at] shinymedia.com to tell me what a moron I am for not knowing who Chad Rogers is or just to say hello.
[Edited to add: I have just found out who Chad Rogers is. I'm sorry, I wont do it again.]
