Rock ‘n’ roll can be broken down as follows: 10% fashion, 10% music andĀ 110% HAIR. We know that adds up to 130%. That’s why we’re writing for a fashion site and aren’t quantum physicists. But it also acts to highlight just how important good hair can be in the making of a musical and cultural icon, and cementing the status of bona-fide rock ‘n’ roll stars. Where would Elvis be without his quiff? Or Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust without his…hisĀ unique style? On the dole queue, that’s where. Here, Brandish pick out the 20 most iconic hair styles in rock ‘n’ roll history.

David Bowie
Flaming red with a quiff up top and party mullet at the back, David Bowie's transformation into Ziggy Stardust was one of the most striking in pop history. With the sci-fi influenced Ziggy Stardust look, Bowie opened the floodgates for a whole sea of androgynous stars and, to a lesser extent, made homosexuality and bisexuality less of a rock 'n' roll taboo in the process.

Of all the films pending release in early 2009, Milk – Gus Van Sant‘s biopic of the gay rights leader/politician Harvey Milk – is most likely to have an impact on the fashion front. As we stride towards a boot-legged, tight-hipped summer, the movie might just start to look prescient: suggesting alternatives to the side parting (big hair!) and yet more reasons to grow a moustache.
Whilst it’s unlikely that Sean Penn will be raising much sartorial interest (despite a great performance) his more fashion-friendly co-stars just might. Emile Hirsch, who graced the cover of AnOther Magazine last year, wears his big-frame specs with a certain nous and his leather jacket/plaid shirt combo is thriftstore classic. Meanwhile, Lucas Grabeel turns more than a few Castro-bound heads, looking especially fetching in a frock, though, in general, he works the 70s look with aplomb as does Milk’s love interest, James Franco.
Milk is in UK cinemas from January 23rd.

Men.Style.com has a retrospective of its top 20 Cannes fashion moments. Most of the fashion moments come from the 60′s and 70′s, the 80′s has two looks, the 90′s has three and the noughties only get one, that being Brad Pitt’s Tom Ford suit.
The fact that there was only one choice from the 00′s must prove that male movie stars have stopped making an effort. It’s like they’re all afraid of being featured on the worst dressed list and have decided to dress in black suit and tie wherever they go. I’m resisting the urge to go on a rant, but you know there’s a problem when sartorial dullard Daniel Craig gets feted for his fashion sense.
