More A/W09 Looks: Steven Alan

By Colin Chapman on May 20th, 2009

Steven_Alan_AW09.jpgFollowing Isabelle’s lead in previewing some A/W looks, here is another collection of relaxed and very wearable clothes, this time from US designer Steven Alan. Whilst not a household name here in the UK (though he has been stocked at places like Liberty) it would be unusual for a well-dressed New Yorker to not have at least one SA piece in their wardrobe.

Loved for his spin on American classics, Mr Alan treads the line between formal and a slightly crumpled. I love the tweeds in this collection, especially the pleated pants and whilst I’m not sure how much plaid I’ll be wearing this Autumn, dressed up with a tie or interesting layers it can be excused. Great styling, too – love those battered workboots!

Say hello and wave online: Buckstyle.com and The Rake

By Colin Chapman on May 15th, 2009

These are difficult days for glossy fash magazines. So with that in mind, here’s a mag you may not be aware of yet and a favourite that’s recently evolved into an online zine.

The Rake is a new men’s glossy, launched recently straight out of Singapore. As if the Dutch publishing hotbed established by Fantastic Man and Butt magazines hadn’t thrown us enough of a geographic curveball, here comes a classy mag out of one of Asia’s most famous shopping meccas (but one not previously noted for a cerebral take on fashion).

Not dissimilar to Fantastic Man, in its pursuit of sartorial elegance and a certain timeless, gentlemanly aesthetic, The Rake enters the market at a difficult time but with quite a special voice. Read A Continuous Lean‘s interview with Rake editor Christian Barker here.

Redwing factory tour

By Jonathan Smith on November 17th, 2008

Red Wing Shoes Factory Tour from Michael Williams on Vimeo.

Red Wing Shoes is one of those companies whose product changes little from year to year and merely happens upon fashion popularity from time to time. This winter is one of those times, with the American Working man being such a strong look rugged and durable clothing is what you need. Red Wing provide a tough hard wearing boot that is a great alternative to Timberland and would complement your Levi’s Vintage and checked wool shirt a treat.

Check out the above video for a quick Red Wing history lesson and to see how they make their boots quite so indestructible.
