Unlikely style icons: Albert Hammond Jr

By Colin Chapman on February 9th, 2009

OK, with arm candy of no less stature than Agyness Deyn, Mr Hammond clearly has taste, so perhaps not entirely ‘unlikely’. But a Google image search of his not-so-long-ago persona in The Strokes shows the big-haired rocker as no great shakes in the business of sartorialism. These days, however, he’s looking quite fine.

Revealing himself as something of an expert in the wearing of a three-piece suit, AH Jr manages to make what could be stuffy tailoring look suitably rock and roll with some carefully edited accessories. A stunning portrait in yesterdays Observer magazine featured a great suit worn with eccentric striped shirt, a very-Satorialist pocket square and an It man accessory – the slim knitted tie. The latter is turning up everywhere – from ASOS to Alexander McQueen via Beyond the Valley. Boyfriends of the super-beautiful get short shrift in the ‘lad press’ (Jamie Hince being a popular target, including ‘worst dressed’ nominations). In the spirit of Valentines, I’d like to suggest that Albert Jr has an eye for more than the ladies.

Albert Hammond Jr. wants us all to look sharp

Now that the Strokes seem to be on indefinite hiatus, guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. has decided to turn his hand to suits. Working together with stylist Ilaria Urbinati, the suits will be available from autumn at Urbanati’s LA based store.

In other Hammond news, there was an interesting article on dressing sharp in The Quietus. In it he states that smart is the new casual, his distaste for underdressed CEO’s (Steve Jobs, I’m looking at you) and how he was the most fashionable in the Strokes.
