Clothing, Designer Spotlight, Outfit picks

This outfit is based around my fashion task de jour (as if I could make that sound any more pretentious!) That task would be to make tasselled loafers wearable while avoiding the Ralph Lauren, polo-player trap so closely associated with this (in)famous yet iconic shoe.
I added items that were almost too pop-y for their own good; a binary watch, a Cassette-belt, a Madonna/80s idol tee from and a pair of Alexander McQueen cropped trousers from Oki-Ni.
This is a blend of vintage and modern that I would be more than willing to wear!

Now this looks like my kind of party!
I feel like a horrible, disgusting sorry excuse for a fashion follower. Why am I bound by such emotional wounds? Why do I feel so sick-minded and wrong?
Answer: I want an invitation to Fake Karl’s closet. Yes, it’s true! I, Will Reid, couldn’t think of anything this week that could be desired more than a day of hanging upside down with Anna and Karl sipping our “respective drinks.”
And don’t even tell me you don’t want to too. There’s even a Yohji Yamamoto-shaped hole in the window!

Zooey Deschanel, Agy Deyn, Irina Lazareanu, Vanessa Paradis; the fashion world is known for it’s adopting of a different muse for each different season. However, while most muses can be linked by their quirky style, elfin features and statement look, Wallace & Gromit really stand out from the crowd.
That hasn’t stopped Harvey Nichols from enlisting their modeling talent for their latest campaign and decked out in D&G shirts, Alexander McQueen suits, Paul Smith scarfs and Ray Ban Wafarers, I’m actually quite jealous!

While potentially worrying and probably not at all a good sign, Andy Warhol’s ‘Death Scenes’ have always interested me. His principle was that by repeating the same image of a man impaled on a lamp-post (that’s just one of the prints,) death became strangely banal. This blazer might not be all blood ‘n’ guts (which with McQueen’s history is rather surprising,) but it is undeniably interesting. With city scenes and a fitted shape, this jacket could be worn at work, in the park, at a party and even to a music festival. I like that Matches put it with jeans for a modern edge and if I could afford the £258 price tag, I would go for a crisp white shirt and an Alber Elbaz-style floppy bow-tie. In faded, purple velvet. *Sigh*

Designer Spotlight, knitwear

Like deck shoes paisley is one of those things I always hated as a child but looking at this Alexander McQueen embroidered jumper I’m starting to come round.
It helps that the paisley isn’t the usual stodgy red and green which belies its interesting history but a rather more delicate affair. The branchlets lend a south-east Asian feel and the placement on the shoulders is quirky without being too obtrusive. The slight snag? The $1,225 price tag. I’ll have to make do with M&S dressing gowns for now I guess.

Heroes and Celebrities, News

So I realise that this is the second time we ( fine, I) have looked at Hayden Christensen on a magazine cover over a relatively short time period but surely a young male celebrity who has every reason to be guarded with the use of his image but agrees to be on the cover of a men’s (non-dirty) magazine in only its second issue deserves to mentioned in our blog? Now better looking blog I might mention.
That and the fact that this issue contains interviews with Alexander McQueen, Editorials with Catherine McNeil, Sean Opry, Camilla Akrans and a whole feature shot underwater. Honestly, am I the only one supressing their child-like excitement here?

Trouser styles have been skinny for a long time, but mirroring womenswear trends the fashion-forward kecks seen on a trendy young man could just as easily be voluminous double-pleated, geek chic cropped, wide-leg, bootcut or dropped-crotch.
In a recent article in GQ style Charlie Porter waxes lyrical about the return of bootcut featured in Prada’s S/S show in a Italo-geek style. I don’t know if I’m ready for bootcut yet, but it took me a while to acclimatise to the return of pleats when Fantastic Man did a feature on them about a year ago. Umbro aren’t a brand you associate with style. No matter what they do, when people think Umbro, they think football. It’s an image association that the company are finding impossible to shake, which is a shame as their Kim Jones collaboration has produced some great trainers, with
these Mid-tops
the pick of an impressive bunch.
Whilst I’m sure no Brandish readers commit
this felony, I’ve started to notice an alarming number of people wearing Mid to
High tops and covering them with jeans that cover the majority of the trainer.
Doesn’t this defeat the point of wearing high trainers?
But enough about my pet peeves, these
trainers are available for a very affordable £60. Considering an Alexander
McQueen Puma trainer costs upwards of £150, these are bargains of Del-boy
proportions.

The next look to make our list is the awkward length. This was a hard one to put into this feature as some do manage to pull it off but not everyone is Terence Koh and it only took a look at the local fashionisto’s crash and burn outfit of Kris van Assche-style combat with tight tee to know that this was one to be hastily put down.
So where did it all go wrong? When did the matronliness of Britain extend to Dolce & Gabbana jodhpurs and McQueen knits? At D&G, trousers were either tucked into boots or (sharp intake of breath) fitted with elasticated hems- yes, the same fabric responsible for the horrific Rocky Balboa-tracksuit/pantaloon ankle. McQueen went for his usual unwearable but exquisite fashions and approached this trend with a blend of Alpaca knit and Spanish embroidery. Some celebs have tried to wear this look but unless you are an artist/indie fashion editor/musician/girlfriend of Irina Lazareanu-type, it’s best to stay away. For those of you willing to take on the challenge and prove me wrong- take a look at this Rick Owens thigh-length top from Brown’s.

Alexander McQueen is undoubtedly one of our most, if not our most, exciting designers. His love of fabric and his innate understanding of what you can do with it are always a pleasure to behold. As usual he didn’t disappoint with his new collection which hit the runways of Milan at the week-end.
The trademark sharp tailoring was of course present and the silhouette doesn’t seem to have changed much from previous seasons: still square cut shoulders, shaped waists and slim legs. But then, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Brocade, another McQueen favourite was also present. This season he has perhaps been holidaying in the Andes as the overall look had a certain Mayan/ Alpacan feel to it with its hats, fringes and shaggy furs.
All in all it had plenty of drama but more than it’s fair share of wearable pieces.

250 nicker for a T-shirt? Are you ‘aving a bubble?
Gorgeous as it is, you’d have to be barking to part with that kind of cash for a T-shirt, even if it is ‘one of the highest specification t-shirts available today’. What’s to specify? It’s a bit of jersey with a crew neck.
Although he’s obviously taken leave of his senses, M. McQueen has not lost his love of technology in fashion. This highly detailed design is bleached onto the shirt rather printed or dyed, and to give it its due, it is beautiful. A perfect example of the McQueen brand, it’s coolly stylish and darkly gothic. I just wish it was cheaper.
If you’ve got money to burn you can get it from Oki-ni.

Footwear

I’m not sure if I like these trainers or not. The lattice effect laces are really cool and the colours look really good together but the chunky sole makes it look like a trendy seven years ago DC skate shoe. There’s something anatomical the shoes that reminds me of bones and gumshields which I quite like and it’s that unplaceable, déja vu feeling that attracted me to them. If you’re not distracted by the chunkyness then you can get your hands on the for $276 (yikes!) from Adasa.

Red and white always look good, this stripy polo top from Alexander McQueen’s diffusion range McQ features built-in red braces with matching white buttons. It’s made in Italy and looks quite macho/retro in a old-fashioned kitsch sort of way. Available from posh site e-luxury for $368 it will add pizazz to a smart office outfit or you could take it to the ’50s with some dark jeans and motorcycle boots. Packet of fags tucked in sleeve optional.
